Legacy sequels, recently they’ve been the talk of town, for better and for worse. The recent Halloween trilogy seems to be beloved by some and hated by others, the new Exorcist sequel underperformed both in box office and public opinion, yet these types of sequels are not stopping anytime soon. One that seemed to go over mostly well with a decent box office, mostly good reviews, and generally happy fans was the 2021 release of Candyman (watch it Here). Of course, plenty didn’t love it or thought it was trying too hard, but overall, it did ok and brought plenty of new ideas to the table while respecting the original. A lot,...

When it comes to the golden era of slasher films, most will say it was the 1980s, but the 1990s are not to be ignored as they brought us an amazing bunch of films and some that redefined the sub-genre (including one that’s getting a fifth sequel this weekend). Here’s our list of the Best 90s Slasher Films:
Wishmaster (1997)
This one is considered a fantasy slasher, so it’s a bit controversial as to if it is a slasher or not. For this list, let’s consider it one. It’s fantastic and Andrew Divoff is 98% of why it’s so good. This film is his and he makes it the best it could be. His work is both charming and menacing, giving his character an aura that makes the whole film what it is. It’s creepy, it has great kills, and the cameos in this one are to die for.

Bernard Rose’s 1992 Clive Barker adaptation Candyman (watch it Here) is considered to be one of the best horror movies of the last few decades, and it spawned a franchise that consists of the 1995 sequel Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, the 1999 sequel Candyman: Day of the Dead, and a 2021 follow-up that was simply called Candyman. None of them were made with the involvement of Rose – and if he had been tasked with making a sequel, the franchise would have gone off in a very different direction. One that would have drawn inspiration from a different Barker story, The Midnight Meat Train. And you can find out all about Rose’s idea for Candyman 2: The Midnight Meat Train (which would have featured the ghost of Jack the Ripper) by checking out the new episode of Wtf Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie, embedded above!

“It was always you, Helen. It was always you.” The original incarnation of the Nia DaCosta-directed Candyman was a very different one and actually prominently featured Helen Lyle as the film’s main storytelling device, Bd has learned. In 1992, I begged my father to take me to see Candyman. He had already turned me into a horror fanatic so he needed to follow through and take me. After the film was over, I was terrified for weeks. My brain would manifest Candyman in the shadows of my room while I slept.
As an adult, I don’t fancy the film as much, but I realized the allure of Candyman was that he was a terror specific to the Black community despite the circumstances of his death. I knew as a child that housing was an issue for poor people and how the main character from the first film, interloper Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen), disrupted the lives of the inhabitants in the Cabrini Green housing project. That is what scared me.

When the 1992 horror classic Candyman made its way to theaters, audiences were introduced to a figure who serves as a representation of America’s original sin and a tragic monster akin to those from the classic era. The original Candyman (Tony Todd) pursuing grad student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) has invited comparisons to The Phantom of the Opera, another lovelorn monster. But the latest direct sequel of the same name by director Nia DaCosta is less of a Universal Monster-esque tragedy.

Even if you've never seen 1992's Candyman, there's a good chance you know what happens when you say the name "Candyman" in the mirror five times. The film, which premiered on Aug. 27, brings the story that began in 1992 full circle with an ending that feels like a punch to the gut. Urban legends are rich sources for horror films but sometimes the movies create the urban legends themselves. That is the case with Candyman, a faux urban legend created in a short story and three movies in the 1990s, which became an real urban legend. The current horror movie Candyman is a re-imagining of the tale of a deranged supernatural figure with a hook for a hand who haunts the Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago. The script was co-written by Jordan Peele but the film directed by Nia DaCosta, who is one of the co-writers along with Win Rosenfeld.
This Candyman includes elements from the earlier movies, which are retold effectively and imaginatively through shadow puppets, one of the film’s best touches. While drawing on the previous films, this version of the Candyman story...

Hey, is this the end of August and near the end of Summer), or is it October, around mid-Fall? Just wondering since this is the third weekend in a row with the release of a new horror flick to theatres. Hmm, maybe the studios are getting a bit of a “head start” in case our health situation goes ‘sideways” (as if that thought’s not scary enough). Last week’s release was an original idea, while the 8/13 premiere was a sequel to a flick from five years previous. Now the roots for this week’s big shocker go back nearly thirty years, but it’s not really a reboot, remake, or a “re-imagining”. The marketeers are dubbing this a “spiritual sequel” as it harkens back to that 1992 original and ignores its sequels (much as the 2018 Halloween only references the...

One neat detail of the new "Candyman" movie is how it continues the legend that was introduced in the first movie, and shows how it changed over time. The best example of this is the case of Helen Lyle, the main character of the original "Candyman" who has now become part of the legend herself. In a newly released "Candyman" clip, we learn how Helen's story has been altered from what we saw in the original film and repackaged to fit the ever-changing Candyman mythology.

Despite its earned cult-classic status, Bernard Rose’s Candyman isn’t without fault. His transposing Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden” from a British neighborhood to Chicago’s Cabrini–Green projects to consider the text’s racial and economic divides was as inspired as casting Tony Todd for the titular, bee-infested boogeyman running on the fuel of a hive mind’s fear. Yet he still centered it all on the shoulders of white savior’s Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen). Rose flirts with the complexity of that choice by having her first act of heroism (being the key witness to putting a copycat monster behind bars) unleash the real monster from hibernation, but ultimately undercuts Candyman’s return as cautionary tale for white supremacy’s unchecked brutality.

So, here’s the thing: there is so much I want to say about this new Candyman and what I really enjoyed about it, but it would literally involve me divulging the very surprising turns that this story takes, so that’s going to make reviewing the film extremely difficult. But what I can say is that Nia DaCosta does take the Candyman mythology in a boldly unexpected direction here that not only enriches everything we know about this character, but also makes it feel extremely timely and timeless all the same.
I know that doesn’t give you a lot of information to go on, so let’s just go ahead and get to the nuts and bolts of Candyman (2021) and I promise at some point it’ll all come together. At the center of this new story is a struggling artist named Anthony (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who is...

We’re gradually getting more news about the new Candyman movie, which will be with us this June. While we don’t have a trailer yet, we’ve recently learned that the hook-handed title character might be played by an unknown actor, and that Tony Todd’s contribution may only be minimal.
Furthermore, while the new Candyman, which will both connect to the original 1992 movie and forge its own path, is already bringing back lead character Helen Lyle, it now appears to be doubling up by reportedly having Vanessa A. Williams reprise her part from the first film.
According to our sources – the same ones who told us Bill Murray would be back for Ghostbusters: Afterlife and that a new Scream movie is in the works, both of which are now confirmed – Williams will again play the role of Anne-Marie McCoy from the first Candyman. In the original movie, McCoy...

Prepare to say his name five times again... if you dare. While producer Jordan Peele and director Nia DaCosta write the script for their reboot of the classic 1992 horror film Candyman, some casting news has surfaced.
SuperBroMovies is reporting that Lakeith Stanfield is in talks to star in the film as the lead character. That character’s name is Anthony, who is described as a “socially pronounced artist in Chicago who researches the urban legend of Candyman. After investigating the killer’s last known whereabouts, strange killings begin to occur around Anthony. The protagonist will serve a role similar to that of Helen Lyle, the main character of the original movie.”
Stanfield previously worked with Peele on Get Out, so it makes sense that the two would eventually work together again at some point in their careers. Stanfield is a talented actor and it’s good to see him get more and more work. The last movie I saw him in...

When it was first announced that Jordan Peele of Get Out fame was producing a “spiritual sequel” to Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror movie Candyman, the first question on everyone’s mind was whether or not Tony Todd would reprise his role as the titular killer, with a lot of fans simply refusing to picture anyone else in the part.
So far, though, we’ve heard nothing on whether Todd will be involved in the film and not only that, but casting news in general has been pretty hard to come by. Racists of every stripe have been telling Americans that they should be afraid of black men for as long as there’s been an America. It took a 1992 horror movie, however, to the turn the embodiment of that fear-mongering into a literal bogeyman that appears out of nowhere to violently murder people. Candyman — written and directed by Bernard Rose, adapted from Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden” (and coming out in a new Blu-Ray edition on November 20th) — sics an undead son of a former slave on a white woman,...
