The sixth episode was the second-best episode of the season, after the Aamir Khan one. Sunny and Bobby Deol in the last episode elicited some genuine laughs from the audience and the viewers. For the first time, Sunny Deol seemed casual talking about his failures and successes over the years and how the Deol family had a stellar 2023, with each member delivering path-breaking record-shattering box offices at the cinemas. It was rare to find them comfortable in their own skin, which made the episode memorable, coupled with some intelligent gags put forward by every supporting actor on the show.

[Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for “Polite Society.”]
It took everything I had not to yell out loud during “Polite Society.”
Not because of the intense fight sequences, killer martial arts, or even that twist — what had this reporter out of her seat was a dance sequence that unfolds during the film’s final act. As Ria (Priya Kansara) dances at sister Lena’s (Ritu Arya) wedding, she aims to “distract” the assembled guests while her friends are busy executing a master plan that’s consumed most of the film’s running time. Dressed in an emerald-green outfit, Ria takes the stage, and the opening notes of “Maar Dala” begin to play.
Composed by Ismail Darbar with lyrics by Nusrat Badr, “Maar Dala” first appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film “Devdas,” based on 1917 Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel of the same name. In the film, Madhuri Dixit-Nene performs the number (sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and K.K.) as courtesan Chandramukhi,...

The 34-year-old started out as a graphic designer, helping her father with his hit projects such as Padayappa, Baba, Chandramukhi and Sivaji. Further, she made India's first motion capture film, Kochadaiiyaan, starring her father Rajinikanth in the lead. She has also set up Ochre Studios,...

InterviewKarthik Subbaraj speaks to Tnm about Rajini's character Kaali, why he cast Simran, and what fans can expect from the film. Anjana ShekarKarthik Subbaraj’s Petta is up for release this Thursday and Rajini fans can barely contain their excitement. Petta is hitting the screens even while Rajinikanth’s 2.0 is still playing in theatres, and this is the first time in years that the star will be having two of his films running in theatres at the same time. The film’s trailer, teasers, and first-look posters have all suggested that Petta would be a Rajini fans' celebration. Director Karthik Subbaraj, too, has admitted this on more than one occasion. During the film’s audio launch, he had said, “Petta is a film inspired by, performed by and dedicated to Rajinikanth.” The story was written specifically for Rajinikanth, and Karthik had said that his dream of making a film with...

Social media If you don’t want a selfie, ‘vaaila gunama sollanum’ and don’t throw the mobile, reads one meme. Tnm StaffHas actor Sivakumar taken to basketball in his leisure hours? Or is it badminton? Or is it practice with the ubiquitous electric mosquito bats? Whatever it is, Sivakumar’s rapid “action” at an inaugural event, where he swatted away a young man’s mobile phone, has succeeded in triggering condemnation on social media. And of course, memes! We are not sure if Sivakumar broke the young man’s phone in the video that is being widely shared online but the internet sure is breaking with memes on the subject. The video, that seems to have been shot before an event, shows actor Sivakumar losing his cool and slapping the phone away from the hands of a young man who was probably trying to click a selfie with the actor.

KollywoodHere's how the actor has used props over the years to establish himself as a fashion icon way before Instagram.Tnm Staff The name Rajinikanth is synonymous with 'style'. Though Bollywood has given it the wildly inaccurate umbrella term 'lungi dance', Rajini has used several props to establish himself as a style icon - way before the days of Instagram. In Kaala, the actor's styling has once again made waves. Dressed entirely in black and sporting a pair of dark shades, Rajini sports a salt and pepper look. Sunglasses, in fact, have become a Rajini staple in recent times, lending him a classy look that suits his age. Here's a glimpse of the various superstar props that have sent the crowds wild over the years: Thundu The way Rajinikanth would throw his thundu (the piece of folded cloth) in the air and make it land again on his shoulder is legendary. He has used this prop to great effect in films like Ejamaan and Muthu. In Padayappa, which was all about a rich, arrogant woman lusting after his style, Rajini used the 'thundu' trick to create one of the most epic scenes ever. When Nilambari invites him home and removes all the furniture save her chair, Padayappa uses his thundu to bring down the big swing and seat himself in it. The scene still sends Rajini fans into paroxysms of joy. Stick Rajini's expertise in wielding the stick, which was a common prop in Tamil films of the '90s, was evident in films like Arunachalam. Twirling it with one hand and planting it on the ground assertively was a Rajini trick that was sure to draw whistles from the audience. Pipe Rajini has always excelled in playing roles with negative shades. He used the pipe in films like Netrikann, Billa and Johnny to build the bad boy image though he also played the hero in these films. The pipe in Tamil cinema has usually been used to suggest a rich background, and though Rajini played the underdog in several films, he was equally convincing in suits. Mouth organ In Padayappa, the mouth organ was another prop Rajini used effectively to suggest romance, style and also snub his arch-enemy Nilambari, played by Ramya Krishnan. One rupee coin If you wondered what could possibly be done with a coin, then you haven’t seen Rajinikanth do it. In Sivaji the Boss, this one rupee coin is his style prop. He flips it from one hand to the other, before tossing it in the air or into his pocket, a feat that can only be pulled off by the superstar. Cigarette/Beedi Rajinikanth's tricks with the cigarette/beedi are immensely popular. From chucking it in the air and catching it between his lips to lighting it with a loaded gun, Thalaivar has done it all. Several films like Annamalai, Baba, Moondru Mugam, Baasha, and Padayappa saw the superstar flicking his cigarette. Baasha, his most iconic film till date, had a song called 'Azhagu' which was basically a celebration of how Rajini can make the most innocuous actions stylish - sure enough, the cigarette features in it too. Chewing gum Though Rajini's cigarette style won him thousands of fans, the actor issued a 'stop smoking' message to his followers on his 63rd birthday. He confessed that he'd suffered from several health issues because of his smoking. Former Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss had also urged the actor to stop glorifying smoking in his films. In Shankar's Sivaji, Rajini shifted to the chewing gum. He flicked the gum to his palm and managed to get it into his mouth! Sunglasses Rajini has worn sunglasses in several films - Dharma Yuddham, Baasha, Padayappa, Chandramukhi, Endhiran, Lingaa, Kabali - to mention a few. Like the pipe, the sunglasses usually appeared when Rajini was playing a character who was considered rich or to suggest his makeover from 'innocent and poor' to 'enlightened and wealthy'. In Kaala, however, though Rajini is playing a gangster from the lower class, he already is seen sporting the glasses. As in Kabali, Pa Ranjith is looking to reimagine the oppressed as powerful in Kaala and the sunglasses is a conscious addition towards achieving this.

The violence in the political dynamics of Sudhir Mishra’s latest work is so organized, it feels like an integral part of the life that the director brings to us in this uneasy, restless yet intriguing and mystifying take on Saratchandra’s Devdas.
In an early scene Dev (played with implosive integrity by Rahul Bhat) handcuffs himself to a window and asks Chandni(that’s Chadramukhi, here played as high-class politician’s escort) to not let him loose, no matter how much he requests her to. At this juncture Dev wants to kick the bottle. Later he just gives up. There are bigger battles than the bottle to be fought.

Sexual Harassment Despite the numerous kinds of grievances that the artists face, there is no agency or body where they could take them up for redressal.Ayesha MinhazAnger, disgust, and agony were the dominant emotions that filled the auditorium at the Somajiguda Press Club of Hyderabad on Sunday. Tears rolled down the faces of those assembled as artists from the Telugu film industry narrated their experiences of the "casting couch" and the financial exploitation. However, the artists didn't despair and appeared resolved about moving forward and intensifying their protests. “I once saw an advertisement on TV about casting and went for the audition. The director asked if I was a genuine transgender person and I told him that I had even undergone gender-affirming surgery. The disgusting director then made me undress and show the same to him,” transgender artist Sona Rathod said as she broke down on the stage. Allegations about the 'casting couch' culture and its prevalence in Tollywood by actor Sri Reddy and her protest outside the office of the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce on April 7 had set wheels in motion for this discourse. Over the last week, several other artists from the industry came forward to speak, some going as far as naming the alleged perpetrators on live TV. For the uninitiated, ‘casting couch’ is a euphemism for the sexually predatory behaviour and sexual exploitation by those in positions of power within the entertainment industry, in return for promises to provide opportunities in films or TV shows. To take the discussion forward, a roundtable on “Sexual and financial exploitation in Telugu film Industry” facilitated by joint action committee of women’s rights organisations was held in Hyderabad, with women and transgender artists taking centrestage. Social activist K Sajaya, Sandhya (Progressive Organization of Women), Sujatha Surepally (Bahujana Prathighatana Vedika), cultural activist Devi, Tejaswini Madabhushi (Hyderabad for Feminism), Satyavati Kondaveeti (Bhumika collective), advocate Vasudha Nagaraj, retired professor Padmaja Shaw and several others expressed their solidarity with the movement and assured support to the exploited artists. From calling out the big stars of Tollywood for their continued silence on the issue of sexual exploitation and violence to discussing the need for unionization, doing away with the middlemen, better pay, body-shaming, addressing disproportionate masculinity in movies to demanding better amenities such as drinking water and toilets in the workspaces, the artists had several demands lined-up. They stressed on the fact that despite the numerous kinds of grievances that the artists face, there is no agency or body where they could take them up for redressal. Why aren’t the seniors speaking up? "Behind all the glitz of the movie world and the makeup, there is a lot of distress, suffering, and sexual exploitation. Despite my attempts to address the issues since over a month, there hasn't been any response from the elders of this industry. Instead, attempts were made to gag dissent and it backfired with so many of us coming forward to speak about our sufferings," Sri Reddy said amidst cheers from the fellow artists. "An issue which has garnered the attention of even the international media still sees no response from the local politicians or the heroes of this industry. Every hero who doesn’t come forward to talk on this is a zero," Sri said. The opinion that the lead male actors of the industry should act responsibly and at least discuss the issue found widespread approval. The comment by Pawan Kalyan asking the women to approach police instead of media houses didn’t go down well with the protesting artists. “Our heroes are a very obvious display of problematic hypermasculinity and heroism on screen. Let’s talk about the utter lack of humanity. Every person who hasn’t spoken about this is either committing the crime or abetting the crime. Every person who has the privilege and is not speaking out is responsible,” said Meera Sanghamitra, national convener of National Alliance of People's Movements. “Where are the heroes of our industry who are shown as beating up hundreds of thugs to protect the sisters? Why are all these brotherly figures absent when the women are publicly speaking against the atrocities? Come and sit with us and do justice. We are going to fight relentlessly till the same is achieved,” said transgender artist Chandramukhi Muvvala. Chandramukhi also criticised those calling the semi-nude protest by Sri Reddy problematic. “Those who are shaming Sri Reddy are the same people who have ogled at scantily clad actors like Silk Smitha, Jaya Malini and Jyothi Lakshmi, and made the movies run for 100 days. If that was not semi-nude, neither is her protest which was the result of pent-up frustration.” The need for a union While allegations about sexual exploitation formed a major part of the discussions, artists and activists also spoke about the need for the unionization of the artists. “We are probably the only workers without a union. If we are united, the roles would come on their own. We lack unity and when some people from among us join as coordinators, they start exploiting the weaker ones. They act as brokers and coerce the women artists into giving sexual favours and the artists find themselves having nowhere to go. This discussion shouldn’t end here and we should form a union,” said a former artist Sri Vani. The activists too stressed on the formation of a union. Numerous comments body-shaming the protesting women and calling them “not beautiful enough” to be a part of the industry can be found on the social media. “Stop body shaming and stop ridiculing the complexion of the Telugu women” was the message that the artists had for them. Susie Tharu, professor, writer and women’s rights activist said “The marginalisation and the dismissal of people because they are considered less than beautiful is a very important issue. All over the world, for several years, only white people were considered beautiful. This situation has changed because of the movements of black people who call themselves black very proudly. We will have to take it up at such a level too.” Those who do cross the countless barriers on their way to get even a blink-and-miss role complain of financial exploitation by the middlemen. One of the major demands of the artists was to rid the industry of the middlemen called coordinators. "Whatever roles I find is from my friends or the coordinators. However, the coordinators take a large percentage of our earnings, which is very wrong and exploitative," said artist Shobhita. “I have come in front of the media to speak about all the disgusting details. Not everyone can do this. They have families and children about who they have to think about before coming out in open,” says artist Shruti. Back in her seat after speaking about the financial exploitation in the industry, Shruti turns around to share her fear with the people around her, “As such, there were only a few roles for us. Now that we have spoken, I am concerned we might not get any roles at all.”...

KollywoodIt's true Jyothika quit films to get married but the trailer for 'Naachiyar' suggests that the actor is not letting marriage or motherhood define her career.Sowmya RajendranFacebook/JyoSuriyaThe trailer for Bala's upcoming thriller Naachiyar shows Jyothika playing a rough and tough cop who brooks no nonsense. The teaser for the film, which saw the actor mouthing a common sexist and casteist cuss word, had sent ripples across social media, with several people objecting not to the word in particular, but to the gender of the person uttering it. The trailer suggests that Jyothika has transformed herself into a character she has never played before – not just the cop role but how she's playing it. The aggression is distinctly different from the cutesy, "bubbly" roles that defined her career when she was acting with the industry's top heroes. Jyothika, who made her debut with Priyadarshan's 1998 Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, entered the Tamil industry with Vaali. In the film, she was the whimsical creation of a young man (Ajith) trying to impress a woman (Simran) with a fake love story. The O Sona girl, the half-sister of Nagma – who had done superhit films like Baasha and Kadhalan – became quickly popular. The 2000 film Kushi, in which she starred with Vijay, made her a big hit with the audience. Jyothika in Vaali In her first stint, Jyothika was known for her expressive eyes and over-the-top gestures (in a recent interview, the actor said that in those days, she was "over-acting" and not acting). The "loosu ponnu", the south Indian version of the manic pixie, was becoming the most favoured characterisation for heroines in mainstream Tamil films. The "feminine innocence" of the yesteryear heroine was further infantilised to create a child-woman whose "enthusiasm" and exaggerated gestures passed off as "cute". As the next generation of heroes after Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan became larger-than-life and turned into demi-gods, the women they pursued on screen were increasingly relegated to song and dance sequences which would be preceded by a "romance" track. Jyothika, who is frequently described as "bubbly", played several such roles; but she also made some interesting career choices. In Rhythm, for instance, she signed up to play a married woman who dies in a train accident. The same year saw the release of Snegithiye, a thriller which had only women actors in lead roles – a proposition that's still considered risky in Kollywood. Jyothika also experimented with genres when given the opportunity, doing films like the adventure fantasy Little John (in which she starred with American actor Bentley Mitchum), Perazhagan (in which she played a dual role, one of which was the visually challenged, de-glamourised Shenbagam), June R (which is about a young woman who "adopts" a mother) and Mozhi (her portrayal of a hearing and speech impaired woman won her the Tamil Nadu State Film Award). In Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, she played a single mom who attempts suicide because of a failed relationship, while in Pachaikili Muthucharam, she played the villain – a woman who seduces men and blackmails them for money. To be sure, Jyothika's acting wasn't on par with the likes of woman actors like Sridevi, Revathi, Gautami, Madhavi, Urvashi and many others who had ruled the screen before her time. She didn't have their versatility, but she remained likable to the audience, succeeding especially in romantic films like Dum Dum Dum and Sillinu Oru Kadhal. Her character in Gautham Menon's Kaakha Kaakha, which established Suriya (whom she would eventually marry) as a star to reckon with, is still remembered by many as among her best. Fans of Suriya and Jo will swear that the couple, who acted together in seven films, shared the best on screen chemistry. Jyothika had acted with both Kamal Haasan (Tenali, Vetaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu) and Rajinikanth (Chandramukhi was a massive hit) and all the younger stars (Vijay, Vikram, Suriya, Prashanth, Madhavan) by the time she predictably called it quits to marry Suirya in 2006. Her comeback to cinema with 36 Vayadhiniley, the remake of the Malayalam film How Old Are You, saw the actor asserting herself and being vocal about women characters on screen. While many have appreciated her for speaking up, several have also cast aspersions on her intentions, believing her statements to be "marketing" for her films. Many have also been dismissive of her return to cinema, accusing her of sticking to doing vanilla, 'feel-good' films that use feminism as a crutch. But going by what we've seen so far of Naachiyaar, Jyothika seems determined to stay and do so on her own terms. She isn't playing to attract the family audience, she's looking to establish herself as a "mass" star, the one who is greeted by wild cheers and loud whistles. While we've had actors like Vijayshanti who have ably performed fight sequences, a woman swearing and wearing her aggression on her sleeves – and being welcomed for it – is new. While mainstream Tamil cinema is still dominated by male star vehicles, we're seeing some interesting changes in characterising the female hero – whether that's Jyothika in Magalir Mattum, Nayanthara in Aramm and Dora or Revathi in Gulaebaghavali. They get "mass" moments, the hero walk, and even punch dialogues. What's more, the audience seems to be lapping it up, at least in the metros. Bollywood has its Vidya Balan and Kangana Ranaut. In the south, actors like Nayanthara, Trisha, Anushka Shetty, and Jyothika have reached a certain phase in their career when they are confident that their name on the title cards alone can bring audiences to the theatres. And they seem to be finding producers and directors who are willing to take a chance, too. It's too early to pass any judgment about Naachiyaar, but one can safely say that the film is a sign of the times; even if it turns out to be terrible, it still signals the arrival of an exciting moment in Tamil cinema as far as gender is concerned. We're finally going to see a woman actor do her job, minus the baggage of marriage and motherhood dictating the roles she's "allowed" to do.

Politics'Baba' was a flop in 2002, but revisiting the film gives us clues about Rajini's politics. Sowmya RajendranAfter years of speculation on when he will join politics if at all, Rajinikanth made the big announcement on the last day of 2017. As several people joked on social media, everyone else was looking for a New Year party to go to, while Rajinikanth simply created his own. Rajini claimed in his speech that he made the decision not because he was power hungry but because of the political situation in Tamil Nadu which had left its people "hanging their heads in shame." However, it is a fact that the actor has nursed political ambitions for a long time now but had remained uncertain about when to take the plunge. The memory of actor Sivaji's unimpressive political run, despite being a huge star in the state, was a sobering lesson to many from the film world who had looked upon cinema as an easy springboard to politics. Rajini's chosen symbol, known in popular culture as the "Baba symbol", has led to much theorising on what it could stand for. The hand position is called Apana Mudra in yoga and stands for "detoxification and purification". It also finds resonance in other traditions and cultures and has similar meanings and implications. The 2002 film Baba was about a young man, an atheist who is given to the vices, discovering spirituality and "detoxifying" himself to realise the truth about the world. The film was produced by Rajini under the banner Lotus International – while it's tempting to say that this had to do with Rajini's widely perceived sympathy for the Bjp, the lotus flower is of symbolic significance in Hinduism. In the Bhagavad Gita, for example, a human being is expected to function like a lotus, untouched by sin like a drop of water on the lotus leaf, and rising above the slush. Further, the ashram of Satchidananda Swami, Rajini's spiritual guru on whom Baba was based, has a temple called Light of Truth Universal Shrine (Lotus) and Rajini's production company was supposedly named after this temple. Although Baba was a flop at the time of its release, it takes on special significance as Rajini is all set to launch his political party. The film was very close to the actor's heart, and he was dejected when the audience rejected it. Rajini took a break after the Baba debacle and came back to the screen with a bang – this time, with Chandramukhi, the Tamil remake of a Malayalam psychological thriller. Ironically, he played a rational psychiatrist in Chandramukhi, a man who pooh-poohs superstitions and comes up with a scientific explanation for so-called supernatural phenomena. Directed by Suresh Krishna, Baba was the closest Rajini came to experimentation after he attained his superstardom. Baba, the film's protagonist played by Rajinikanth, is the reincarnation of a saint from the Himalayas. Interestingly, the symbol launched by the actor on the 31st includes a snake (the circle around the mudra is actually a snake) which stands for the cycle of life, death and rebirth in Hinduism. Though Baba dismisses religion as mumbo-jumbo initially, he becomes a believer in destiny and god once he meets the 2000 year old saint after whom he was named. In the film, Baba acts as a kingmaker, ensuring the victory of an honest man as the Chief Minister of the state. Pertinently, he does this through a boon that he could have used for himself. Despite his followers asking him to become the "permanent Cm", Baba rejects the allure of political power and chooses instead to renounce the world and ascend the Himalayas. But the film doesn't end at that point – the good Cm is shot dead even as Baba is walking away with the sages. As he hears the shots, Baba turns back and walks towards the people with determination. The sage, dressed in saffron, bless him, gets a weapon in his hand to signify that he's ready to fight the good fight and a piece of cloth comes flying in the air and coils around his head like a snake to form a turban. And yes, Baba holds his other hand in the yogic mudra that has now become the actor's political symbol. Interestingly, the 2002 film ends with 'To be continued' – was that to say a sequel was on the way, or a cinematic announcement about Rajini's entry into politics? More than a decade ago, Rajini fans were flummoxed by the film and what the actor wanted to say through it. It did so badly that Rajini had to compensate distributors and theatre owners. Fifteen years later, the film lends itself to a more informed reading. Just as in Baba, Rajini has positioned himself as entering the political arena not for power, but because the people "need" him. In his speech, the actor asserted that he had been compelled to join politics because he was disgruntled with how the state was being run. The actor reminded his fans that if he so wished, he could have grabbed power at 45 years of age and that he had chosen to wait thus far only because his real intentions were not political power, but something loftier. Rajini has kept his political ideology under the broad heads of 'anti-corruption' and 'transparency', much like his contemporary from the cinema industry Kamal Haasan, who is also looking to enter politics. However, those who have watched Rajinikanth's political moves closely suspect that his desire to infuse politics with 'spirituality', translates to aligning with Hindutva forces to saffronise the state. Rajini's party is yet to take off. For all his talk on spirituality and higher goals, will his political avatar be a hit or a flop like Baba? In a state that has been ruled by two Dravidian parties which have their origins in the rationalist movement? Only time can tell.
