Joni Mitchell has shared her new live album At Newport, commemorating her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival.
Co-produced by Mitchell along with fellow Newport performer Brandi Carlile, the album features 12 live recordings. Throughout the performance, Mitchell and Carlile were accompanied by artists including Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. The setlist includes Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.”
Not only was Mitchell’s Newport set her first live performance in over 20 years, but it also marked a rare public appearance since she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. Mitchell’s longtime friend, filmmaker Cameron Crowe, wrote about the magic of her return in the live album’s liner notes. (You can get the physical version of the album here.)

Joni Mitchell has officially announced At Newport, a live album immortalizing her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. The project arrives on streaming services, CD, and 2xLP on July 28th.
Mitchell’s first live performance in 20 years came during Brandi Carlile’s set at the festival, so it’s only fair that Carlile would co-produce the live album with Mitchell herself. Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes also performed with the artists during the set, which featured Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.” Mitchell even performed a solo instrumental version of “Just Like This Train” on guitar.
At Newport also features liner notes from Cameron Crowe, who contextualizes Mitchell’s set — which followed a brain aneurysm she suffered in 2015 — with the earnest prose we’ve come...

Tanya Tucker sings a moving ballad about aging and mortality in her new song “When the Rodeo Is Over (Where Does the Cowboy Go).” It’s the second release from the incoming Country Music Hall of Fame member’s latest album Sweet Western Sound, which arrives June 2.

God only knows it was a matter of time until the Recording Academy picked the Beach Boys as the recipient of one of its annual all-star tributes, and the group’s legacy isn’t done any shame with “A Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys,” airing Sunday night at 8 Et/Pt on CBS (and for on-demand streaming on Paramount+). No wrong harmonies are struck, literally or figurative, in a two-hour show that starts out feeling a little bit by-the-numbers but eventually lands on a series of knockout covers fit for a Wilson.
Are you surprised that Brandi Carlile would be the highlight of a tribute special? Then come out from under your rock and do stay up late enough to catch both of her performances on the show, since she is one of a handful of artists granted both solo and duet slots in the setlist. The country legend and newly inducted member of the Country Music Hall of Fame has readied another LP called Sweet Western Sound, due out June 2nd via Fantasy Records. Brandi Carlile anchors this weekend’s 48th-season premiere of Austin City Limits, bringing a little bit of church into Austin’s Moody Theater with her.
Specifically, Carlile recalled attending vacation bible school as a kid and doing little projects around parables such as the wise man who built his house on a rock. It ended up inspiring the song “You and Me on the Rock,” which appears on Carlile’s album In These Silent Days, and on its deluxe edition In the Canyon Haze as a duet with her wife Catherine Shepherd.

“The Return of Tanya Tucker, Featuring Brandi Carlile,” a documentary that premiered Sunday at the South by Southwest Film Festival, has had its world rights acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, the company announced Wednesday.

Celebrity comebacks don’t often go exactly as planned, but it helps when the planner is someone with as much of a knack for military precision and as broad a sense of the big cultural picture as a Rick Rubin or a Brandi Carlile. Rubin, of course, built Johnny Cash from a casino-playing relic back into some kind of god with the records he produced for the Man in Black in the ’90s and 2000s, and Carlile had the idea she could do something like that with her own personal heroine, Tanya Tucker, in 2019. There was at least one critical difference, though: Carlile, unlike Rubin, thought to hire a director and camera crew the day before recording began.
The end result of that foresight, “The Return of Tanya Tucker, Featuring Brandi Carlile,” documents just how well it went when Carlile and Shooter Jennings more or less coerced Tucker into letting...

Pixar released two films last year, “Soul” and “Onward.” Funnily enough, the two are a bit like the brothers from the latter film, if “Soul” is the overachiever and “Onward” is the underappreciated underdog. According to our odds, both films will likely get nominated in the Best Animated Film category, but “Soul” has consistently ranked higher than “Onward.” However, the fantasy adventure has something that “Soul” doesn’t have: a Grammy-nominated song to compete in the Best Song category.

The film delivers a classic Pixar emotional gut punch in its climax, and the song,...

Not just one of the best animated films of the year, Pixar’s “Onward” sits as one of the best animated films, period. Beautifully inventive and narratively rich, “Onward” stands as one of the awards season’s most underrated gems, especially with its story.
One of the last films to be seen in theaters before the Covid-19 pandemic, the film has been in the thick of the awards race for best animated feature. As Pixar always does, the film is much more than its visuals. The movie features wonderful voice performances from its cast, including Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mychael and Jeff Danna’s inventive score and a wonderful original number “Carried Me With You,” written by Brandi Carlile and Phil and Tim Hanseroth. Dan Scanlon, Jason Headley and Keith Bunin’s screenplay hits all the emotional chords, especially in the film’s big finale.

A version of this story about Brandi Carlile first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If Brandi Carlile had first seen Pixar’s “Onward” by herself, she might not have ended up writing and performing the song “Carried Me With You” for the film about two elf brothers trying to bring back their late father. But the filmmakers first showed her footage from the film in the company of Phil and Tim Hanseroth, twins who have been her closest musical collaborators for her entire career — and when the footage ended, she looked at the brothers.
“They were choking back tears, and I thought, ‘It’s an animated movie — what’s going on?’ And then they turned to me and said, ‘We want to do this. This is a story about brothers, and we want to write a song.'”

The winners of the 2020 Americana Honors and Awards were announced Tuesday morning, with the Highwomen and John Prine among this year’s winners. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Americana Music Association decided to forgo an in-person awards ceremony in 2020, instead announcing the winners via social media.
The Highwomen may have been mostly absent from the CMAs and Grammy Nominations, but the all-star quartet of Amanda Shires, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby lead among Americana Awards winners in 2020. The group locked up prizes for Album of the Year for their self-titled debut,...

The Seattle-based musicians flew in especially to perform at the To Nashville, With Love tornado relief benefit concert and, with songs like “The Eye,” helped take back the power of last week’s natural disaster and transform it into something healing.

Brandi Carlile will serve as the official ambassador of Record Store Day 2020, the singer revealed Friday.
Carlile announced her ambassadorship in a video filmed in her attic recording studio in Seattle alongside “the twins,” longtime collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth.
“We’ve been making the physical manifestation of independent-minded music for over two decades in this space,” Carlile said, noting that her musical hero Elton John often frequents indie record shops.
“What independent record stores do is that they mine, archive, love, meticulously care for, and make available to you other people’s dreams.

Just a few days after the trophy for best original song was given out at the Oscars comes news of the first significant new original song of this movie year. The end-titles theme for the upcoming Pixar film “Onward” has been recorded and co-written by multiple Grammy winner Brandi Carlile, Disney announced Wednesday.
The song will be released simultaneously with the full soundtrack, out digitally Feb. 28 in advance of the film’s bow in theaters March 6.
Carlile’s announcement of the new song on her social media got responses from some famous friends. “Hello Oscar,” wrote Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello. “Come and join the club!” responded Bernie Taupin, who won the Academy Award three nights earlier for co-writing Elton John’s “I’m Gonna Love Me Again.”

Tim Hanseroth is sitting on a chair in Brandi Carlile’s Seattle-area home studio, strumming his guitar while Carlile glances over pensively from the corner of her brown leather couch, her arms hugging her knees. They’re gathered in this rather idyllic place — right across the driveway from the home Carlile shares with her wife and daughters, shrouded by evergreens like a treehouse in Narnia — to produce a new record for the Secret Sisters, a.k.a Alabama’s Laura and Lydia Rogers. Country music legend Tanya Tucker picked up her first two wins at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The 61-year-old singer won for best country song for “Bring My Flowers Now” and best country album for “While I’m Livin’.”
“After 50 years in this business, I have a few firsts left,” said Tucker in a speech. “I can’t believe it.”
Tucker took the first win alongside co-writer Brandi Carlile, who said sharing the Grammy with Tucker is a “great honor of my life.”
“No matter how old you are, never stop following your dreams,” said Tucker.
Tucker was first nominated for a Grammy in 1973 for her breakout hit “Delta Dawn.” Prior to this year, she’d been nominated 10 times, but hadn’t won an award. Her last nominations came in 1994. “While I’m Livin’,” which generated three nominations in all this year,...

Billie Eilish swept the top categories at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards as she and brother/recording partner Finneas O’Connell took home six out of the seven awards they were nominated for. She also won pop vocal album while O’Connell earned producer of the year and engineered album (both non-classical).

During the second of her six sold-out concerts at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Brandi Carlile joined Lucie Silvas — the British-born, Nashville-based singer whose vocal ferocity and incisive songwriting are akin to her own — for a thundering cover of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Dusky and soulful, Silvas’ potent pipes, like Carlile’s extraordinary instrument, are suited to an array of styles, but there’s nothing quite like hearing either singer soar to the heavens on a dramatic power ballad. Tanya Tucker and Brandi Carlile appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show on Thursday night to deliver a mesmerizing rendition of their song “The Wheels of Laredo.” Written by Carlile with her bandmates Phil and Tim Hanseroth, the imagery-rich track is a standout of Tucker’s comeback album While I’m Livin‘, her first LP of new material in 17 years.
Tucker, sporting a Dolly Parton ‘do and a teal fringe jacket, sings with gravitas, summoning the south of the border vibe of the lyrics as Carlile harmonizes behind her and strums an acoustic guitar.

It was the first time that Tucker met Brandi Carlile, a longtime fan who teamed up with Shooter Jennings to co-produce the country vocalist’s first album in 17 years. “Now, a woman’s life ain’t just a list of the worst things she has done,” sings Tanya Tucker on While I’m Livin’. The line arrives during “Mustang Ridge,” the sing-along mission statement that opens Tucker’s first album of new material in 17 years. There’s a reason Tucker wants to make that point up front: unlike her male Seventies outlaw contemporaries whose exploits only ever seemed to bolster their iconoclast images, Tucker’s musical reputation has always been bogged down by her tabloid exploits. “As she grew...
