Mikael Trench was born in Silver Spring, Maryland and moved to Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 8, where his love of filmmaking truly began. Inspired by classic monster films such as the original "King Kong" and the works of Ray Harryhausen, Trench would begin creating live action and stop motion shorts during middle school with friends. Stop motion would end up being his preferred medium and throughout high school and college, Trench would continue to create various short films and short web series, beginning to break into small film festivals and winning awards at this time. He studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, where he received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Animation and became involved further in the art and filmmaking community within Atlanta, including multimedia editing roles for such organizations as VOX ATL and ASIFA South, as well as diving into film journalism through his nearly four year involvement with the SCAD Connector and SCAN Magazine as their award-winning Arts and Entertainment Editor, with such accolades as 1st Place for the Georgia College Press Association for Best Entertainment Review three years in a row and Best Arts & Entertainment Story from the Nationwide College Media Association Pinnacle Awards. He has also collaborated on numerous independent stop motion projects, crafting such works as a bumper for Turner Studios, two short films for Club SciKidz, a music video for hip hop R&B artist hmptnBAE, and pixilation animation for director Helet Van Staden.
He would go on to develop his senior short film, "To Love a Ladybug", which would be officially selected or a finalist in over a dozen festivals from around the world, including the New York Animation Film Awards and the Anim8 Student Film Festival in New York, the East Lansing Film Festival in Michigan, the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival in British Columbia, the First-Time Filmmakers Showcase in the United Kingdom, and more, as well as receiving Best Student Animation from the Splice Film Festival in New York, Best Animation from the Hollywood South Urban Film Fest, and the Gold Award from the Spotlight Short Film Awards.
