“I think it’s just the stark reality of all the things that happened to this one person and the level of clearheaded determination she had,” shares Nikki M. James of what surprised her the most about Ida B. Wells, the suffragist she portrays in the new musical “Suffs” on Broadway. An early version of the musical by writer and composer Shaina Taub described the civil rights icon as “unflinching,” which the actress says is the “perfect word” for Wells. In addition to her “huge hutzpah,” the Tony Award winner admires how she balanced “all of her unbelievable work” with motherhood, which is something she herself is doing now, opening a new musical in New York while raising an 18-month-old child. “I just am in total awe of her and it’s a connection I think we share,” she adds. “It’s really cool to get to see a show from different perspectives,” says Hannah Cruz about her unique history with the musical “Suffs.” When the show played Off-Broadway at the Public Theatre, the actress played the role of suffragist Ruza Wenclawska, but in the Broadway production that just opened at the Music Box Theatre on April 18, she steps into the role of Inez Milholland. The performer says of the two women, “They’re actually incredibly similar… like two sides of the same coin,” explaining that “they were both socialists, they were both very radical.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Cruz shares that she didn’t know much about Milholland – or many other of the suffragists depicted in Shaina Taub’s musical about the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote – prior to joining the project. But in the case of the “suff” that she inhabits she says,...

“I try to think about what it would be like to just walk through the world with blissful confidence,” explains Grace McLean when describing her portrayal of president Woodrow Wilson in “Suffs.” The actress is one of the only people in the all-female cast to portray a male character. In McLean’s case, it’s the man who constantly stood in the way of the suffragist movement. “There’s no apology ever,” says the actress of his expectations for deference, “and that’s unfamiliar for me, but I don’t think it’s unfamiliar for Woodrow Wilson and men of that type.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Suffs” follows the American suffragist leader Alice Paul (Shaina Taub) in a years-long struggle to earn women the right to vote. Much effort within this movement is focused on obtaining the backing of Woodrow Wilson. But the suffragists must constantly face off...

Bad Cinderella, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s updated musical re-telling of the classic fairy tale, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, June 4.
The musical, which features lyrics by David Zippel and book by Emerald Fennell, has been struggling at the box office after critical drubbings. The production received no Tony Award nominations last week – the musical will close one week before the scheduled Tony ceremony.
Box office figures for the show took a big hit after the Tony nomination shut-out, tumbling by $188,678 from the previous week to land at a small $326,303. Even with an average ticket price at a barely-there $54.33, the musical could fill only 54% of seats at the Imperial Theatre.
When it closes, Bad Cinderella will have played 33 preview performances and 85 regular performances at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre.

If there was any indication of how Bad Cinderella’s Broadway run would go, it was apparent during the show’s Oct. 3 announcement. Actress Linedy Genao, who plays the titular Cinderella, addressed a gathered crowd of media, fans, and a ravenous online audience ready to see how the American attempt of the short-lived London musical would work.
“But I do have one thing to tell you,” Genao said into the mic, while composer Andrew Lloyd Weber looked on from the sides. “I’m not your Cinderella. I’m your bad Cinderella.

Chamber musicals don't get much more chamber than composerlyricistbookwriter Grace McLean's In the Green, an intriguing new piece receiving its premiere at LCT3's Claire Tow Theater. Musically complex, dramatically abstract and, as presented by director Lee Sunday Evans, intensely intimate in style, In the Green may need some sharpening to clarify its storytelling, but as a whole it is an ambitious work that's worthy of the focused attention it demands.
