When I, Tonya, hit theatres in 2017, viewers and critics everywhere were divided. Some people enjoyed Margot Robbie‘s performance as the disgraced ice skater Tonya Harding. In contrast, many people in the ice skating community felt the show painted Harding in an undeservedly good light.
I, Tonya, took some liberties with the storyline, but the dark comedy tried its best to stick to the real events. For instance, Harding’s mom really did wear a wire to trap her daughter, like in I, Tonya.

I, Tonya follows the life and career of disgraced figure skater Harding and explores her connection to the 1994 attack on her famed rival Nancy Kerrigan. Harding was the first American woman to land the triple axel in the 1992 Olympic Games but failed to replicate the move in subsequent competitions.

When Daniel Kaluuya won the 2021 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” he became the 77th performer to be honored for a portrayal of a real person. There has been at least one such case across the four acting categories in 19 of the last 20 years, with the 2017 quartet being the last to all win for playing fictional characters. This year, there are nine nominees with the potential to continue the trend, including two whose real-life counterparts are still living.
In Oscar history, it is most common for a win of this kind to come in the Best Actor category. In the nine decades since George Arliss prevailed here for playing Benjamin Disraeli in “Disraeli” (1930), 27 more lead male champs have followed, and they now account for 30% of all victories in the category. The six who have triumphed in the last decade alone...

The Best Supporting Actress awards were first handed out at the 9th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1937, and in the nearly 85 years since, 83 women have received this honor. Only two have won multiple Oscars in this category: Dianne Wiest and Shelley Winters. The great character actress Thelma Ritter holds the record number of nominations in this category with six, sadly without a win, while Amy Adams has had five bids in supporting (one in lead), also without a win.
This is a category that often sees first nominations, many times recognizing ingenues who go on to earn multiples nominations throughout their careers. The youngest acting winner of all time was a Best Supporting Actress recipient: 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal won for “Paper Moon” in 1974. However, veteran actresses are also considered, with some receiving their sole nomination in their golden years. In fact, seven of the 10 oldest nominees in this category each received her sole nomination,...

As it’s that time of year to celebrate our moms for Mother’s Day, we thought it would be fun to look back at some of the most memorable mean moms of the movies. Not those lovable mothers who sang to their kiddos or who heroically sacrificed something great for their kiddos, but those moms who made us shudder at the not-so-great things they were willing to do for their offspring, made us despair that any parent could treat a child in such a way or just made us laugh at their absolute ineptness at parenting. Some might not exactly be mean in the traditional sense but are certainly overly permissive or vastly selfish.
Of course, “Mommie Dearest” herself makes the list. But Joan Crawford (played by Faye Dunaway) isn’t the only real-life mom to make the list. The notorious Tonya Harding has a doozy of a stage...

Two much-admired funny ladies, Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, share the record for the most Primetime Emmy wins for acting with eight each. But both trophy-magnets might want to be prepared to welcome a new member to their elite club. Namely, Allison Janney, whose role in HBO’s darkly comic truth-based movie “Bad Education” pairs her with Hugh Jackman as an assistant to his much-worshipped superintendent of an elite Long Island high school. Students are being recruited by Ivy League colleges while the district’s rep also boosts the economy of the area when it comes to real estate prices. It’s a win-win for everyone.
But what his many admirers don’t know is that Jackman and Janney’s characters are partners in crime who have been embezzling millions of dollars from the district to provide them both with a lavish lifestyle.
SEEWhat’s so good about HBO’s ‘Bad Education?...

If the calendar says Oct. 31, TMZ staffers are dressing to the nines to honor the best (and sometimes worst) pop culture moments -- and these costumes slayed, if we do say so ourselves. And we do. We had everyone from Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson (pre-split), Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ... and Tonya Harding and her ma, Lavona Golden. These were just a few standouts, but check out the gallery...

Allison Janney might be about to win her first Academy Award for her playing Tonya Harding’s mother Lavona Golden in I, Tonya — but her portrayal isn’t exactly like the real-life woman according to someone who knows her.
Harding’s childhood friend Sandra Luckow tells People that the movie stretched some truths when it came to Harding’s allegedly abusive mother.
“In some ways, I have to say that she was no more cruel than a lot of skating mothers at the ice arena,” Luckow says. “She just did it with a lot more honesty. Did Mrs. Harding yell...
