When Megan Leavey joined the Marines, she was looking for a fresh start. Things at home weren’t going well — she couldn’t keep a job, and her best friend had just died. After joining the Marines, though, she wasn’t faring much better — until she ended up in the K9 unit. There, she met a snarling, growling dog named Rex — and he scared her … a lot. But over time, and throughout their tours in Iraq, they became an inseparable, life-saving duo.
Based on a true story, the 2017 film Megan Leavey is the journey of an unlikely pair and how they managed to stay together against all odds. From director Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) — with a screenplay by Pamela Gray (Conviction), Annie Mumolo (Bridesmaids), and Tim Lovestedt (Thunder Force) — the military drama stars Kate Mara, Ramón Rodríguez, and Tom Felton.

Watching the science-fiction space thriller I.S.S., I couldn’t help but get the feeling that maybe this claustrophobic and talky material might be better suited as a stage play than as a movie, where audiences might be anticipating something a bit more compelling along the lines of a Gravity or an Alien.
Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s competent direction of Nick Shafir’s Black List script never manages to set the screen on fire as it is more focused on the increasingly tense relations between two trios – one American astronauts, the other Russian cosmonauts — aboard the International Space Station just as war between the two countries breaks out on Earth, causing great complication and conflict for the six.

Law enforcement is a complicated arena. There’s no room for error when lives are on the line, yet corruption seeps into the foundation repeatedly. Today, Disney+ unveiled FX‘s Class of ’09 trailer for the limited series from Tom Rob Smith, starring Brian Tyree Henry and Kate Mara.
“Class of ’09 is a suspenseful thriller limited series that follows a class of FBI agents set in three distinct points in time who acclimate and grapple with immense changes as the U.S. criminal justice system is altered by artificial intelligence,” says the show’s official description. “Spanning multiple decades and told across interweaving timelines, the series examines the nature of justice, humanity, and the choices we make that ultimately define our lives and legacy.”

Today is Veterans Day, a day where we celebrate those who lived and died serving the country. I joined the U.S. Air Force in 2008, and lived and traveled throughout Europe and Asia, and completed one deployment. I had some incredible experiences and made some lifelong friends. But one thing I cherish most is getting to cultivate an unmatched love of cinema in addition to honing my skills as an entertainment writer.
In 2013, I began writing for a site called Moviepilot while I was stationed in Virginia, and wrote my first film review for Riddick. Immediately upon publishing, I was bombarded with messages about how I don’t know sh*t about action cinema, and “women shouldn’t be reviewing action movies.” My first experience taught me a lot about audience interaction and internet harassment over opinions.
I continued to write for various smaller sites while serving in the military, but transitioning out was even harder.

There was a brief period of time during the first Obama administration when Hollywood tried to make Jason Segel a leading man. Freshly minted by the ever-expanding Apatow Cinematic Universe, he was being pitched as the next romantic comedy star. Things didn’t really pan out, and whatever charming qualities can be found in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jeff, Who Lives at Home, and The Five-Year Engagement, those films revealed the limits of Segel’s on-screen charisma. This was a supporting actor through and through, always at ease performing in the friend zone.
So it’s not at all surprising that Segel shows up as Dane, the saintly bestie in Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s Our Friend, one of those prototypical American indies that tries to be comedic, dramatic, and life affirming all in the same breath. Based on an autobiographical article entitled “The Friend” written by Matthew Teague, the film jumps...

Since breaking out as a movie star in the steamy big screen adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” Dakota Johnson has managed to navigate Hollywood through a series of daring indies and projects with auteur directors, while avoiding roles similar to that R-rated sexcapade.
No role has been more different from Anastasia in “Fifty Shades” than the one in her latest film, “The Friend,” which made its premiere Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. In “The Friend,” Johnson plays a woman who receives a terminal cancer diagnosis and is told she has only a few months to live.
When asked if she found that she was getting offered the same sort of sexy role following the success of the high-profile “Fifty Shades” franchise — as it often happens with many young actresses of a certain age — Johnson explained why that didn’t happen.
“Not really, no. There’s not a lot like those movies.

Gabriela Cowperthwaite makes movies about true stories, at once unbelievable and unforgettable in the gaping depth of their emotion. After the 2013 documentary “Blackfish,” which exposed the violent injustice inflicted on a captive orca at SeaWorld, came the filmmaker’s feature debut “Megan Leavey” in 2017, retelling the relationship between Corporal Megan Leavey and military working dog Rex. For her sophomore feature “The Friend,” Cowperthwaite builds on Matthew Teague’s 2015 Esquire article of the same name, in which the author recounts the last two years of his wife Nicole’s life following her terminal cancer diagnosis.

In The Art of Racing in the Rain, directed by Simon Curtis, Kevin Costner voices the internal monologue of Enzo, a beautiful canine and the hero of this story. Adapted by screenwriter Mark Bomback from the novel by Garth Stein, here we have the jerkiest of tearjerkers. It’s a film so determined to wring out emotion from the audience that it offers up a cancer storyline and a beloved-animal-reflecting-on-those-he-loves storyline.
Denny Swift (Milo Ventimiglia) is a handsome racecar driver who spontaneously buys a puppy, feeling called to do so. Not too long after, he falls in love with schoolteacher Eve (a lovely Amanda Seyfried). As the milestone moments of their life come fast and furious, Enzo takes us along for the ride, voraciously voicing his opinion of every character and plot twist to which we are introduced. As Enzo mentions, he considers himself more human than dog in many ways.

Mike Mignola’s “Hellboy” has always been a story of dramatic contrasts. Here is Hellboy: a musclebound demon monster who fights evil and behaves like a blue-collar schlub, even though he’s the last great hope for humanity (and also is prophesied to destroy it). The horrifying creatures and stark color palette exist in clear opposition to the human and whimsical characters. What’s scary is also humdrum, and what’s humdrum is totally epic.
The first two “Hellboy” movies, directed by Guillermo del Toro, adapted Mignola’s creation into superhero stories tinged with fairy tale theater. They were sympathetic, hopeful films with tragic creatures and, at the center of the franchise, a charming romance. But that’s just one way to adapt it. The reboot by Neil Marshall (“Doomsday”) takes as many of Mignola’s contrasts as possible and shoves them into a single film, creating a sprawling saga of clashing conceits,...

Ramon Rodriguez (Iron Fist) is set as a lead opposite Malin Akerman in NBC’s legal drama pilot Prism, from Daniel and Ben Barnz’s We’re Not Brothers Productions, Carol Mendelsohn and Julie Weitz.
Written by Daniel Barnz, who also directs, Prism is inspired by Rashomon, the 1950 Japanese period psychological thriller directed by Akira Kurosawa. Prism is described as a provocative exploration of a murder trial in which every episode is told through the perspective of a different key person involved. Each new version of the facts ratchets up the mystery and the suspense, calling into question everything we have seen so far and asking, Is the right person on trial? Driven by an ensemble of complicated characters, the show lets the audience ask if truth matters less than who can tell the most compelling story.
Rodriguez, who was sought after, fielding multiple pilot offers. will play hard-hitting prosecutor Eduarto Guaty.

Fox Searchlight’s “The Shape of Water” and Lionsgate’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” topped the list of films with the most nominations for this year’s Golden Trailer Awards, honoring the best in film and TV marketing, trailers and posters, it was announced Wednesday.
“The Shape of Water” and “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” each nabbed eight nominations, followed by Disney’s “Black Panther,” Focus Feature’s “Thoroughbreds” and HBO’s “Westworld: Season 2,” each of which came away with seven nominations.
Netflix and Warner Bros. led this year’s nomination tally by studio, each with 61 nominees, with 21st Century Fox rounding out the top three studios, grabbing 53 nominations.

“The major story line heading in to Cannes this year was ‘No Netflix.’ In the Golden Trailer competition, Netflix and Warner Bros. are tied with 61 nominations,” said Evelyn Watters, Golden Trailer Awards executive director, in a statement. “This is the new world, where art intersects with commerce on demand, and the ‘Netflix Effect’ on the industry cannot be ignored.”
The 19th annual Golden Trailer Awards will be hosted by comedian and actress Michelle Buteau (“The Tick,” “Broad City”) on Thursday, May 31, at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
“Each year, this competition gets harder and harder. Not just because of the sheer number of entries our judges have to consider,” said the award show’s executive producer Monica Brady in a statement. “The artistry and skill that goes into perfecting great trailers, commercials and posters deserves our fullest recognition and appreciation. They are the cornerstone of what drives our awareness of movies and great entertainment week after week and they are one of the most important components of marketing campaigns.
“The Golden Trailer Awards celebrate all of the heroes behind the scenes – the stealth players who work long hours to create these amazing marketing gems that we love to watch online or during the pre-show in our favorite theaters,” she continued.

Read original story ‘Shape of Water,’ ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ Lead Golden Trailer Award Nominations At TheWrap...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Electrifying and genre-busting, this romantic mystery thriller toys with our expectations and plays with ambiguity. Jessie Buckley and Johnny Flynn are mesmerizing separately and explosive together. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

A vulnerable woman. A violent man. We’re seen this dynamic onscreen countless times before, always playing out in utterly predictable ways. But there’s nothing predictable about Beast, the electrifying feature debut of British writer-director Michael Pearce. This movie would be a total upending of the genre… if it could be easily slotted into a genre. This is a serial-killer movie in which the serial killer and his crimes are merely part of the background. This is a romance and a thriller...

MaryAnn’s quick take… In this centenary year of the end of World War I, this story of a real-life dog who served in the trenches is a gentle, engaging way to introduce kids to an essential piece of history. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a sucker for movies about dogs, and about the Great War

You’ve most likely heard about military dogs. There have been a good few movies about them, and many of them are based on true stories, such as the recent excellent Megan Leavey, about a Marine and her bomb-sniffing dog who save each other in body and soul. And military dogs get medals and commendations and such, just like human soldiers do. So clearly there must be a most-decorated dog soldier ever…...

Sunday night’s episode of Fox’s The Simpsons addressed the controversy about the show’s Indian-American character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, who some have blasted as a negative stereotype.
On Sunday’s episode, Marge Simpson reads a book to daughter Lisa, prompting Lisa to remark the “cisgender girl” heroine is “already evolved,” “doesn’t really have an emotional journey to complete,” leaving the book with “no point.”
Marge counters, “Well, what am I supposed to do?”
“It’s hard to say,” Lisa responds. “Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?”
In case any viewer did not get the point, Lisa turned and looked at a framed photograph of Apu – who operates the Kwik-e-Mart convenience store in Springfield and is voiced by Hank Azaria. The photo is inscribed with the message, “Don’t have a cow.”
“Some things will be dealt with at a later date,...

Exclusive: Okja, the Netflix parable film about a supersized pig and the theme of treatment of animals raised for food, and Bleecker Street’s military drama Megan Leavey, about the bond between a Marine and her combat dog, both have been named Outstanding Feature Film at 32nd annual Genesis Awards.
Presented by the Humane Society of the United States, the awards are designed to honor animal-protection themes in news and entertainment and are awarded in 18 categories covering every aspect of the industry. Fox TV’s perennial animated series The Simpsons was another big winner, taking the Sid Caesar Comedy Award, and ABC News’ Nightline won a pair of awards in the National TV News Magazine category.
Univision and National Geographic tied for winning the most trophies with four, and HBO Documentary Films, Nickelodeon and NPR were among other top honorees.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A slow, mild exploration of guilt, grief, bigotry, and militant sectarianism, all in the context of a treatment for a zombie virus. Tepid and frustratingly underdeveloped, with few surprises. I’m “biast” (pro): love a good zombie movie…
