Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, arguably two of the greatest actors ever to come out of the British Isles, have surprisingly only worked together once before. The two Welshmen collaborated on a special one-night production of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood in the presence of Prince Charles in December 1992. But as they gather to discuss their latest collaboration on The Two Popes, Hopkins has to remind Pryce that he had directed Pryce’s work in the show.
Why has it taken them this long to find a pair of roles—one German and one Argentinian Pope—that brought them together in a major way? Perhaps it was divine intervention. In Anthony McCarten’s delectably literate and entertaining screenplay, The Two Popes, directed with style and grit by Fernando Meirelles, they both get to roll off dialogue that would be the envy of any actor, and both have landed deserved...

Ever since Robert Pattinson was confirmed to don the cape and cowl for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, fans have been chomping at the bit to figure out just who will be joining him on the big screen. But with a reported six villain lineup in the works, a lot of that attention has been spent waiting on learning who he’ll be facing off against. Thankfully, the pieces are finally starting to come together.
After negotiations fell through with Wolf of Wall Street and Superbad star Jonah Hill, we quickly heard that the film had gobbled up its Riddler in There Will Be Blood‘s Paul Dano and its Catwoman in Zoe Kravitz. And things got even sweeter earlier this week when Deadline brought us the news that both Warner Brothers and Matt Reeves have begun circling around Collin Farrell to play Gotham’s fowl foe, the Penguin.

The editor behind Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, Jinmo Yang’s task on the film was to meticulously finesse the pacing of the darkly hilarious, visceral and increasingly tense thriller.
Centered on the family of Kim Ki-Taek—a penniless, unemployed bunch living in the squalor of a basement-level apartment—the film examines the intersection of the Kims with the Parks, a wealthy and glamorous family living the life the Kims so badly want, and feel entitled to. Taking a job as a tutor to the Parks’ teenage daughter, Kim’s son then finds clever and ugly way to get jobs for each of his family members within the Park residence, so that they can all feed off of the wealth of this family—without the Parks ever connecting the dots, with regard to the four people they’ve employed.

Exclusive: Two years ago, a West End staging of a new play based on Hollywood producer Robert Evans’ classic Hollywood memoir The Kid Stays In The Picture seemed all but certain for an imminent transfer to Broadway. Strong reviews, a sold-out run, rampant press rumors of a transfer, a name director in Simon McBurney, the stateside-friendly subject matter, the direct involvement of Evans himself and London’s Royal Court Theatre’s then-recent record of well-received New York transfers combined to make the Hollywood tale seem like a perfect Broadway baby.
Then, nothing.
Well, nothing but rumors, and, given the book’s troubled stage adaptation history, for understandable reason. An earlier adaptation of Evans’ memoir had spectacularly flamed out, with a prominent playwright – Jon Robin Baitz – and director – Richard Eyre – bolting from the project. Reports suggested even Evans himself was ready to walk, at one point seeming,...

Poland’s Oscar submission this year for Best International Feature Film, Corpus Christi was inspired by real events that one would never think are real.
Directed by Jan Komasa, from a script by Mateusz Pacewicz, the drama centers on Daniel (Bartosz Bielenia), a 20-year-old who experiences a spiritual awakening while in a Youth Detention Center. Barred from entering the seminary as a result of his crimes, the young man finds work at a carpenter’s shop following his release, while refusing to give up on his dream of becoming a priest.
“There’s several cases each year of people pretending to be priests in small communities in Poland. I guess it’s like Christian Halloween or something,” Komasa said, joining Bielenia and Deadline’s Dino-Ray Ramos for a panel discussion on the film at The Contenders Los Angeles. “I didn’t know about [this phenomenon], but apparently it’s a thing. With Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, his sixth film with Quentin Tarantino, cinematographer Robert Richardson sought to capture ‘60s Los Angeles in all its glory, filtered through the auteur’s singular aesthetic, as well as his childhood memories.
Following a frustrated television actor struggling to make his transition to features and his loyal stunt double, the starry pic often lingers on the world behind the scenes of Hollywood’s Golden Age, featuring recreations of real television series of the era—including Lancer and Hullabaloo—the fictional Bounty Law, as well as bits of cinematic wizardry that place Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in well-known dramas, like John Sturges’ The Great Escape.
Balancing the overarching aesthetic of Once Upon a Time with that of each of these productions, Richardson wound up shooting with a handful of cameras and many more lenses, on Super 8, 16 and 35mm, daunted by the question...

Francis Ford Coppola dominated headlines earlier this month when he was quoted out of the Lumière Festival in Lyon, France as calling Marvel movies “despicable.” Coppola was responding to a question about whether or not he agreed with Martin Scorsese, who criticized Marvel films for turning cinema into a theme park. In a new interview with Deadline, Coppola says his “despicable” quote was not translated correctly. The director clarified the word “despicable” was not being used directly for Marvel films but for the overall film industry’s general push into making commerce films over art.
Deadline includes Coppola’s actual statement made in France, which reads, “Well you know because of the lack of risk in the production. Marty Scorsese says that the Marvel picture is not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. Exclusive: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the duo who in 2011 launched the singular screen sensation known as Game of Thrones, have walked away from their much-publicized deal with Disney’s Lucasfilm to launch a feature film trilogy in 2022.
Benioff and Weiss were supposed to usher in the post-Skywalkera era of the Star Wars brand with a 2022 new-start story that would stake out a new frontier for the era-defining cinema brand created by George Lucas. The Emmy-winning pair cited their historic deal with Netflix. They said their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but, regrettably, their schedule is full up.
“We love Star Wars,” the pair said in a statement to Deadline. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.

DC films produced by Warner Bros. are constantly being compared to the McU, usually to the former’s disadvantage. But the tide appears to be slowly turning. Last year, Aquaman cleared a cool billion at the box office and now, Joker has hit another milestone by making as much money for Warner Bros. as Avengers: Infinity War did for Disney.
According to a report by Deadline, Joker, which was made on a modest budget of $60 million, has earned over $745 million at the box office. On the other hand, Avengers: Infinity War made over $2 billion worldwide, but against a budget of $300 million. The difference in what it cost to produce each is what allows the two films to have a comparable profit ratio.

Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the screenwriter behind critically acclaimed indie films like Colette, Ida, and Disobedience, has been tapped to script for a film about how New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey investigated and eventually broke the lengthy piece that detailed years of sexual misconduct by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. The article, which ran on October 5, 2018, unmasked an array of alleged sexual harassment and assaults against women by The Weinstein Company co-chairman that dated back decades. The piece included details of hush money paid to cover up the sexual indiscretions and first-person accounts by actresses. Weinstein has continued to deny any charges of non-consensual sexual indiscretions. The article gave way to the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement.

Peter Weber, star of the upcoming season of ABC’s The Bachelor, suffered a facial injury Monday on a golf course in Costa Rica, where the series began taping last month, Deadline has confirmed. Sources close to the production say the reality TV star already is back to dating for the show.
Weber, who was announced as the Bachelor for the upcoming season shortly before taping began, reportedly received 22 stitches after falling on a golf course, hitting his head and reportedly cutting his face on two cocktail glasses he was carrying. The 28-year-old slipped as he went to step onto a golf cart, shattering at least one of the glasses.
ABC did not respond to Deadline’s request for comment, and Warner Bros. declined comment.

As the Toronto Film Festival comes to a close and Hollywood preps to hand out some Emmys, the Specialty box office continues to churn out some original storytelling — and this week’s theme seems to be the concept of sound.
The Sound of Silence
Distributor: IFC Films
Michael Tyburski makes his feature film debut today with The Sound of Silence, which made its world premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Co-written by Tyburski and Ben Nabors, the film stars Peter Sarsgaard as Peter Lucian, an expert in identifying a symphony of almost undetectable sounds. When he is not collecting sounds, he is a “house tuner” who diagnoses the discordant ambient noises produced by everything from wind patterns to humming electrical appliances that adversely affect his clients’ moods. Exclusive The 60th anniversary of The Twilight Zone arrives next month and the late, great Rod Serling is clearly a man in demand more than four decades after his death at age 50 in 1975.
The Twilight Zone premiered on CBS in the waning months of the Eisenhower era, but more than a half-century later the brand is enjoying a resurgence, as is Serling, the creator, host, producer and social conscience behind the pioneering anthology that specialized in “imaginative tales that are not bound by time or space or the established laws of nature.”
Few shows plant a flag in the public imagination the way The Twilight Zone did. Its name, its theme music, and many of its characters (including monotone narrator Serling) became part of the American lexicon. In 2013, the WGA named it the third-best written show in television history (behind The Sopranos and Seinfeld) while TV Guide ranked it as...

El Norte, the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated epic about immigrants from Central America seeking the promise represented by life in U.S., returns to 200-plus movie theaters Sunday to mark National Hispanic Heritage Month and the film’s 35th anniversary.
The revival, a presentation of Fathom Events and Lionsgate, marks the film’s first theatrical release since its 1984 debut and features a state-of-the-art restoration produced by the Academy Film Archives, supported in part by the Getty Foundation. Lionsgate will also re-release El Norte on digital formats September 17.
The theatrical presentation will include a special introduction by El Norte director and co-writer Gregory Nava (whose credits also include Mi Familia and Selena) as well as a new featurette on the dangerous “outlaw” production that yielded a heartfelt film that both Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale would invoke during the 1984 presidential race.

Olivier Assayas isn’t satisfied with the version of his new film, the Cuban spy epic “Wasp Network,” that world-premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week. According to a report from Deadline, the French writer/director is taking the film back into the editing bay, even as it plays the Toronto International Film Festival this week. The new cut will be unveiled at the film’s U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival this fall.
“There are a few things that need clarification,” the “Personal Shopper” and “Summer Hours” director told Deadline. “There are a series of fixes I’ll make. I might shorten some parts and lengthen others. The running time won’t change considerably, but it’s about gaining fluidity. Hailee Steinfeld is in negotiations to join the cast of Hawkeye, the Marvel superhero stand-alone series set for the soon-to-launch Disney+ streaming service, Deadline has confirmed. Jeremy Renner is reprising his McU role as Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye.
The project is described as an adventure series in which Barton will pass the torch to Kate Bishop, a member of the group known as the Young Avengers and first female to take the Hawkeye name after Barton. Steinfeld would play Barton.
The series is part of Marvel’s major contribution to the slate of Disney+, which launches November 12. Also in the works are series based on Marvel characters including Loki, Vision & Scarlet Witch, and Falcon and Winter Solider among others.
Similar to Hawkeye, the McU film world, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is turning over his hammer to Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster. That will happen in Thor Love and Thunder in fall 2021.

Amazon has put in development Fish Out of Water, a half-hour Larry Sanders-like comedy starring and executive produced by Grammy winner Brad Paisley, from A.D. Miles, Will Arnett and Sony Pictures TV, where Arnett is under an overall deal, Deadline has learned.
Written by Miles, Fish Out of Water, described as a Larry Sanders take on celebrity vanity projects, takes a behind-the-scenes look at country music star Paisley’s struggle to keep a simple little fishing show from turning into his own personal Fyre Festival.
Miles will executive produce with Arnett, Artists First’s Peter Principato, Marc Forman, Paisley and his manager Bill Simmons, and Kendal Marcy. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.

Robert Plant was reportedly so moved by the upcoming indie film The Friend, the singer allowed for two Led Zeppelin songs to appear in the movie.
Filmmakers usually face a steep fee when they endeavor to include Led Zeppelin’s music in a movie. Considering The Friend was made on a $10 million budget, it’s unlikely director Gabriela Cowperthwaite could afford to put one of the band’s songs in the film, let alone two; Deadline reported that, under normal circumstances, the Zeppelin songs would have cost a third of The Friend‘s budget.

Justin Kurzel had set the indie film world alight with his debut feature Snowtown, and its follow-up, Macbeth, seemed to confirm the arrival of a director whose vision was unique and stunning. That director returns to his brand of cinema this year with True History of the Kelly Gang, which adapts Peter Carey’s novel about Ned Kelly into a rip-roaring, contemporary-feeling fever dream about outlaws, identity and sexuality.
But, in between, Kurzel was distracted by a difficult time on Assassin’s Creed, his first foray into Hollywood filmmaking, and his feelings of frustration in trying to pull it off. “Assassin’s Creed was an incredibly challenging film to make,” he says now. “I just got completely caught up in the maelstrom of that, and for a whole lot of reasons it was a difficult film to write, to make, and to land. There can be few more positive signs of industry change than the filmography of Beanie Feldstein. Her first feature credit was in 2016; it was also the last time she worked on a big screen project with a male director. She is now at Tiff with her fifth film, How to Build a Girl, as she rides high following the breakout success of Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart this summer, and she may be the first new star to emerge in a new era of opportunity.
“It is sort of extraordinary,” she marvels, well aware of the path the industry had walked before her. “I’ve been so lucky to have entered my working life at a time when these stories are actually being celebrated, and created by women themselves, rather than being simply about women.”

Scott Z. Burns has tackled some of the weightiest subject matter in a series of movies made in concert with Steven Soderbergh—movies like The Informant!, Contagion and Side Effects—in ways that are equal parts in-depth and accessible. But this year’s double bill might represent his most comprehensive, and ever so slightly dispiriting, study of the state of the establishment; a pair of features that lay bare the injustice that can run unchecked as long as nobody dares to speak up.
First, there is his Sundance-premiering directorial outing The Report, which follows Senate Intelligence Committee staffer Daniel J. Jones, as he sets out on his years-long odyssey to craft a report into the enhanced interrogation tactics—the U.S. Government’s euphemistic phrase for torture—employed in the war on terror. Playing out as a deeply dramatic political thriller, the movie is anchored by Adam Driver’s stunning turn as Jones,...

Daisy Haggard was changing a diaper when she found out that Showtime had picked up her six-part British comedy Back To Life. “I could not have been happier,” she said.
The show was originally produced by Fleabag producer Two Brothers Pictures for the BBC with the U.S. premium broadcaster acquiring it after its British run. It will air on Sunday October 6 and you can watch the trailer below.
Back To Life was created by, written by and stars Haggard, who previously starred in Showtime’s Episodes. She plays Miri Matteson, who, after 18 years behind bars, returns home and stumbles back into adult life in the coastal town she once knew, while the mystery of her past looms large.
It follows Miri’s first few weeks out of prison navigating her way in a new world, trying, and frequently failing, to lead a normal life in her picturesque but claustrophobic seaside hometown.

Spoiler ALERTt: The story includes details about the series finale of Jane the Virgin on the CW.
After five seasons and 100 episodes, the CW’s Jane the Virgin ended its journey tonight. It has been an important show for the CW and for television — Jane gave the CW its first major award recognition when star Gina Rodriguez won a Golden Globe; it has been a rare series to feature a main character speaking exclusively a foreign language with the Spanish-speaking Alba; and it defied convention by experimenting with styles, including magical realism.
True to its telenovela roots (Jane the Virgin was loosely based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana La Virgen), the dramedy wrapped its story with a happy ending as Jane and Raphael finally tied the knot, Petra and Jr reconciled, Esteban proposed to Darci and Rogelio’s dream of becoming a crossover star came true.

The Television Academy will not hand out a Governors Award in September at the 71st Emmys Awards, Deadline has confirmed. It marks the first time since 1994 and second time ever that the special honor won’t be presented.
The honor is bestowed to “an individual, company, organization or project for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences or management of television which is either of a cumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to go beyond the scope of the Emmy Awards presented in the categories and areas of the competition.”
The Academy’s board of governors did not put forward a name this year, according to Variety, which first broke the news Wednesday.
Last year, Star Trek received the Governors Award, which was first handed out in 1978 to CBS executive William S. Paley. There was no award given in 1993 or 1994.

New Regency has acquired the film rights to the long-gestating adaptation of Richard Brautigan’s Gothic Western novel The Hawkline Monster which the legendary Hal Ashby had been trying to get to the big screen, Deadline has confirmed. Roy Lee (It), Andrew Trapani (Winchester), and Steven Schneider (Pet Sematary) will serve as producers.
The Harold & Maude filmmaker first acquired The Hawkline Monster in 1975, a year after the book was published and attempted to adapt it into a film. Various stars were attached including Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman as well as Jeff and Beau Bridges. Following the death of Brautigan in 1984 and then Ashby in 1988, Tim Burton fell in line to develop the project for Nicholson and Clint Eastwood. Last month, the internet lost its collective mind when it was revealed that Robert Pattinson was being eyed for the title role of Matt Reeves’ The Batman. But for all the noise that bombshell caused, neither the studio nor Pattinson himself had been willing to make any kind of official announcement. And while that still remains the case, Deadline has already gone ahead and done it for them, confirming yesterday that the Twilight star is indeed our next Dark Knight.
Given that many fans wanted a safer choice like Armie Hammer or even an older actor like Jon Hamm, there was an enormous amount of backlash against the idea of “Battinson.” However, just as many people leapt to his defense, telling those only familiar with his work in the aforementioned Twilight to check out his other films before making any judgements.

It’s official! Warner Bros. and director Matt Reeves have officially cast Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman, and Deadline also confirms that this will be a trilogy.
Pattinson has been the frontrunner for the role because the director liked him and his acting skills. It’s explained that the studio was torn between him and Nicholas Hoult. They both recent did screen tests for the film, and in the end, Pattinson won over everyone.
There are a lot of fans out there who were not happy with Pattison being considered for the role, but you know what? The guy really is a solid actor! Forget the Twilight films and look at the other movies that Pattinson has made! He’s seriously a talented actor, and I think he’s going to end up surprising a lot of fans who have been hating on him.

News broke last night that Robert Pattinson is in talks to be the latest actor to play Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Fans are already up in arms about the left-field casting choice – just as they were about Michael Keaton, Heath Ledger, Ben Affleck, etc. – but it seems that “Battinson” isn’t a done deal yet, as there’s another British actor still in the running for the lucrative part.
Shortly following Variety’s initial report of Pattinson’s hiring, Deadline changed the story somewhat by clarifying that the 29-year-old star has yet to finalize his deal with Warner Bros. Steve Harvey’s syndicated talk show will end in June, Deadline has confirmed. It just finished taping its last original episode. The move comes as NBC’s Owned Stations Group has struck a deal to air The Kelly Clarkson Show in the daytime slots.
Steve, which is produced by Img through its originals unit, will be shopped to other outlets, with the producer talking to other stations and platforms, Deadline understands.
Harvey’s first move into daytime, The Steve Harvey Show, was produced by Endemol Shine and NBCUniversal.
The Kelly Clarkson Show, which will feature stories and celebrity guests, will take over the post-Ellen slot from Steve in the fall.
