Exclusive: Michael Lieberman, formerly head of publicity at Metrograph, has been hired as Director of Communications, U.S., at Mubi. He will be based at the New York offices of the global film distributor, producer and curated film streaming service.
In his new role, Lieberman will lead all communications for the U.S. including publicity for Mubi releases, working alongside Global Director of Communications Sophie Rhatigan, U.S. Director of Marketing Corey Wilson, VP Global Marketing Lilly Riber, U.S. Director of Distribution Chris Mason Wells and Global Distribution boss Jon Barrenechea.
At Metrograph, Lieberman helped oversee the launch of the Metrograph cinema in 2015, Metrograph Pictures in 2019 and Metrograph Digital last year. He also promoted programming like retrospectives of Brian De Palma, Maggie Cheung and Gena Rowlands/John Cassavetes, and theatrical releases of A Bigger Splash and Downtown 81 among others.
He previously held publicity positions at Susan Norget Film Promotion and Film Presence.

The newly-created role is based in Berlin and Omer will report into Lilly Riber, global vice president of marketing, to lead Mubi’s worldwide marketing strategy, with a particular focus on brand development and growth across Europe and the UK.

Jon Barrenechea, formerly deputy director of marketing at Picturehouse Cinemas, will join film art-house streaming service Mubi as vp of marketing on March 5, 2018.
In December 2017, Mubi struck its first multi-year, multi-territory studio deal, with NBCUniversal. The eleven territory deal includes films such as Lust, Caution, Being John Malkovich, Touch of Evil, Videodrome, Mall Rats and Hitchcock titles Vertigo, Rear Window, Rope, Frenzy and Shadow Of A Doubt.
The streaming service recently theatrically released titles such as Berlinale Golden Bear winner On Body & Soul from director Ildikó Enyedi and Silver Bear winner Félicité, both shortlisted for the Oscars Best Foreign Language Film category. It is also teaming up with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn on a new Mubi ident.
