The Second City announced plans Tuesday to open a physical location in New York this November, alongside its first slate of shows and cast.
The improvisational comedy enterprise, which supports live theater and training, will house its new nearly 12,000 square-foot entertainment complex at 64 N. 9th St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Set to open on Nov. 16, the venue will feature two cabaret-style live theaters, seven Training Center classrooms, and a full-service restaurant and bar.
The Second City currently has two other physical locations, with its Toronto location celebrating its 50th year, followed by a 65th anniversary for The Second City Chicago in 2024. The opening of the New York location arrives as the comedy brand looks to expand content offerings onto new platforms beyond the live stage, according to the company.

Legendary improv and sketch comedy haven The Second City has named Ed Wells as chief executive officer.
The former global head of media and education for Sesame Workshop joins the company to drive strategic growth in areas including content creation, distribution and consumer products. It’s a no-brainer for the incubator to comedy all-stars like Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Chris Farley, Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler, Jason Sudeikis, Eugene Levy and Keegan-Michael Key.
At Sesame, where Wells also served as executive vice president, he oversaw an aggressive international expansion for all things Elmo and Big Bird.
“I am honored to be named CEO of this legendary and beloved institution. The Second City has a new CEO.
The venerable improv comedy brand that launched the careers of people like Bill Murray, Tina Fey, John Belushi and Stephen Colbert and Gilda Radner, has hired Ed Wells as its new chief executive, effective this month. Wells joins The Second City from Sesame Workshop, where he was executive vp and global head of media and education.
Wells previously worked as an executive at the WWE and Viacom.
“This is a 60-plus year old organization, really an institution,” Wells tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “You don’t survive for that long without the reputation that The Second City has unless you are constantly reinventing or innovating. I want to honor that tradition by constantly innovating at the content and the business level, to make sure we have another 60 years ahead of us.”
