Can you ever really go home? Millions of cinephiles are likely asking themselves this as summer 2021 winds down with doubt again lingering over their favorite movie houses. For a time, theaters were once again open for big business in the U.S. and UK, and remain so in at least one of those venues. But box office reports paint an ambiguous future, and many casual moviegoers clearly remain reluctant about returning to the cinema.
Nonetheless, it’s still good to be back in those old familiar places, as well as to have an ever expanding list of options to discover on streaming. Take one extremely cool monster, add a dash of nostalgic humor and creepy fun, sprinkle it with some really fun characters, and mix well in a bucket of gore and practical effects, and you’ve got a recipe for a real horror treat! Which is exactly what PG: Psycho Goreman is—a treat. A treat, a joy, a pleasure, and many other positive adjectives. PG: Psycho Goreman is ridiculously charming and taps into everything that is fun about the horror genre.
Psycho Goreman is written and directed by Steven Kostanski and stars Nita-Josee Hanna, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks, Alexis Hancey, and Matthew Ninaber. In PG: Psycho Goreman, two siblings unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord that has been entombed on Earth for millions of years. A cheeky 12-year-old develops extraordinary powers after taking control of a menacing extraterrestrial, in this engaging comedy-horror
Siblings Mimi, a ferocious force of nature, and her timid older brother Luke find a strange, glowing gem while messing around in the dirt. Turns out it summons a blue-hued, bad-tempered alien (actor Matthew Ninaber under a ton of makeup and prosthetics) from the planet Gygax; considered a “demon” by his enemies, he describes himself as “the archduke of nightmares”. However, once Mimi works out they can control him with the gem, she renames him Psycho Goreman, or PG for short.
Delighted with this new source of power, Mimi goes on to prove there is truly no force in the universe more capricious, cruel and catty than a 12-year-old who can have anything they want. Soon, she is forcing PG to turn her brother’s friend Alasdair (Scout Flint) into a squat monster...

Psycho Goreman is what happens when a ten-year-old absorbs every episode of Power Rangers, a ton of mid-80s Saturday morning cartoons and their older brother’s video nasty collection, downs several bags of skittles and then rattles off everything they can remember in one, long, rainbow-vomit filibuster of stupidly violent fun. It’s an absolute delight.
Writer/Director Steven Kostanski earns his bread and butter as a make-up and prosthetics artist, having plyed his trade on shows like Star Trek Discovery and Hannibal, with his movie CV including Suicide Squad and Crimson Peak. You get the impression he spends his time on those sets fantasising about what he could do with all of those monsters, all of that spare latex, all of that gore, if someone just gave him a camera and the keys to the costume shop. Luckily, every once in a while, someone does. Thus we have Psycho Goreman,...

Psycho Goreman is one of those movies that I was about 90% sure I was going to love even though all I knew about it was its title and a handful of images I had seen online. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.
The story is as ridiculous as it should be for a film titled Psycho Goreman. We see siblings Mimi and Luke “unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord who was entombed on Earth millions of years ago after a failed attempt to destroy the universe. They nickname the evil creature Psycho Goreman (or PG for short)and use the magical amulet they discovered to force him to obey their childish whims.” And if that doesn’t sell you on...

Once, long ago, an evil galactic conqueror known as the Archduke of Nightmares was struck down by an alliance of heroes who hoped to end his reign of terror forever. Buried on a far off world, it seemed that he had finally been defeated. Life was evolving on that world, however, and millions of years later his grave would become the back garden in which young Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and her brother Luke (Owen Myre) play complicated ball games. When they dig a hole and unearth this monstrous being, the galaxy seems doomed - but Mimi finds the jewel that lets her command him, and sets out to have some fun.
Psycho Goreman is not a film made to suit all tastes, but it's brilliantly written and constructed, and if it hits the spot for you, very few films will be able to compete. This is not another tedious spoof.

One of the trends of our time is the way that extreme culture can wind up turning into kiddie culture. Head-banging metal that was once the down-and-dirty province of those in their teens and twenties had evolved, by the time of “School of Rock,” into a grade-school activity as wholesome as choir practice. “Psycho Goreman,” written and directed by Steven Kostanski, offers a variation on the same phenomenon. In spirit if not in fact, it’s a Troma film — in this case, a gonzo absurdist intergalactic sci-fi horror comedy that flaunts the gory ingenuity of its no-budget analog effects, along with a lot of so-broad-it’s-camp acting. “Psycho Goreman” wants to bring back those heady Troma fumes. But this one, quite knowingly, is like “The Toxic Avenger” remade by the Robert Rodriguez of “Spy Kids.”

It opens with a gladiator-level war of attrition between two middle school-aged siblings in their backyard. The game is called “crazy ball” and the loser gets buried alive. Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and Luke (Owen Myre) pick-up their respective dodgeballs, throw them as far behind themselves as possible, and run after the other as fast as they can to try and take advantage of the five-point bonus “butt shot” rule. Writer/director Steven Kostanski shoots it like battle with blaring score, close-up scowls, and pools of mud leading towards the inevitable “switcheroo” that makes it so you can steal victory from the jaws of defeat with a punch to the gut. And through it all is the playful absurdity we can expect from a movie titled PG: Psycho Goreman.
The sequence’s best part, however, is an outlier lasting just a few seconds. Kostanski shifts the vantage point to what appears to be an upstairs window.

"The kind of genre cinema we dream of." Rlje Films has debuted a new official trailer for the upcoming VOD release of a wacky horror sci-fi comedy titled Psycho Goreman. We featured a teaser trailer earlier in the year before the film's originally planned premiere at SXSW (before the fest was cancelled). This is the latest film from Canadian filmmaker / SFX artist Steven Kostanski (who most recently made The Void) and it instead premiered at Monster Fest and the Sitges Film Festival this year. PG, or Psycho Goreman, is about two kids who, using a magical amulet, force the evil monster who showed up to obey their childish whims, and accidentally attract a rogues' gallery of intergalactic assassins to small-town suburbia. Starring Nita-Josée Hanna, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks, Alexis Hancey, and Matthew Ninaber as PG. This looks ridiculously awesome and totally kooky and I am so looking forward to it.

If you’ve ever had a squidgy soft spot for John Carpenter’s The Thing, then 2016’s The Void is a legit must-watch.
Of course, 1980’s style body horror shockers are simply few and far between these days. However, luckily for us, Canadian writer-director Steven Kostanski hit it out of the blood-soaked park with his criminally underrated Lovecraftian cosmic horror flick by channeling his inner Carpenter while delicately blending in some healthy dollops of twisted Hellraiser writing and potent Silent Hill imagery, too.
Nefarious cults, hellish abominations, batshit crazy doctors and secretive private investigators take centre stage in an unsettling otherworldly tale of skin-crawling dread. Not only did the pic boast one of the most eye-catching posters ever, but it also triumphed with some of the most jaw-droppingly awesome practical visual effects this side of the millennium, which cemented the Canadian filmmaker as one to watch for the future.

The SXSW festival has announced its program for the Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Special Events, Episodic Pilot Competition, and late addition Features for its 2020 film festival.
This year’s program has 135 feature films, including 99 world premieres, 9 North American premieres, 5 U.S. premieres, and 75 films from first-time filmmakers. The SXSW Midnighters section is a favorite for festival attendees who like the weird, electric and terrifying selections. It includes dark comedies, thrillers and slasher horror.

One trend we noticed was the presence of a strong female protagonist fighting off everything from hordes of zombies, bad dates, creepy rideshare drivers and supernatural forces. As always, genre filmmaking can be found throughout the SXSW program, and...
