God only knows it was a matter of time until the Recording Academy picked the Beach Boys as the recipient of one of its annual all-star tributes, and the group’s legacy isn’t done any shame with “A Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys,” airing Sunday night at 8 Et/Pt on CBS (and for on-demand streaming on Paramount+). No wrong harmonies are struck, literally or figurative, in a two-hour show that starts out feeling a little bit by-the-numbers but eventually lands on a series of knockout covers fit for a Wilson.

There were major changes in how these nominees were decided. Chief among those was the elimination of the nomination review committees. For decades those committees would take the top 15 or 20 vote-getters in their categories and decide which would be the final nominees. Those secret, anonymous panels often produced surprising results: this past year The Weeknd was shut out entirely. He decided to boycott the awards, joining in a chorus of music stars who have criticized the voting process. Some of the criticisms even came from inside the house,...

Brandi Carlile offered a rendition of Joni Mitchell’s song “Woodstock” during a performance for SiriusXM’s Small Stage Series. The track comes off Mitchell’s 1970 album Ladies Of The Canyon.
Carlile is famously a fan of Mitchell’s work and has covered the singer numerous times. Last month, Carlile announced plans to cover Blue in its entirety at Carnegie Hall on November 6th, her second time covering the legendary LP. She first performed the album in October 2019 in Los Angeles, shortly after she met the singer-songwriter at her 75th birthday tribute concert.

Pixar released two films last year, “Soul” and “Onward.” Funnily enough, the two are a bit like the brothers from the latter film, if “Soul” is the overachiever and “Onward” is the underappreciated underdog. According to our odds, both films will likely get nominated in the Best Animated Film category, but “Soul” has consistently ranked higher than “Onward.” However, the fantasy adventure has something that “Soul” doesn’t have: a Grammy-nominated song to compete in the Best Song category.

“Onward” follows two mismatched brothers in a modern fantasy kingdom as they embark on a quest to reunite with their dead father. Its submitted song is Brandi Carlile’s “Carried Me With You,” a country ballad that mirrors the story’s theme of brotherly love and support. The film delivers a classic Pixar emotional gut punch in its climax, and the song,...

A version of this story about Brandi Carlile first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If Brandi Carlile had first seen Pixar’s “Onward” by herself, she might not have ended up writing and performing the song “Carried Me With You” for the film about two elf brothers trying to bring back their late father. But the filmmakers first showed her footage from the film in the company of Phil and Tim Hanseroth, twins who have been her closest musical collaborators for her entire career — and when the footage ended, she looked at the brothers.
“They were choking back tears, and I thought, ‘It’s an animated movie — what’s going on?’ And then they turned to me and said, ‘We want to do this. This is a story about brothers, and we want to write a song.'”

Country legend Tanya Tucker and her producer, Brandi Carlile, will perform together on the Grammys in one week, both singers announced on their respective social media accounts Sunday.
Wrote Carlile: “Let’s. do. this.”

The “first to know” comment is a reference to the fact that CBS and the Grammys have consigned much of the announcement duties this year to the artists themselves, with many performers unveiling news of their appearances on Instagram ahead of the official network announcements, as in this instance.
Tucker is this year’s most nominated country artist, 26 years after her last nomination and 47 years after her first. She has four nominations this year for “While I...

A little over two years ago, Brandi Carlile played a small show at Nashville’s Basement East for the holiday party thrown by her new producer and label, Dave Cobb and Low Country Sound. It was there that she debuted songs from her album By the Way, I Forgive You, which would be released in a few months and catapult her to international superstar. Since then, she’s won three Grammy Awards, formed the Highwomen, performed a tribute to Joni Mitchell, produced records for Tanya Tucker and the Secret Sisters,...

Country supergroup the Highwomen, consisting of Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby, are the musical guests on Thursday’s episode of the Ellen DeGeneres Show. During the appearance, the quartet chatted with the host and performed the song “Redesigning Women.”
For their performance, the group gets some instrumental assistance from twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth, who have been Carlile’s long-time collaborators, as well as Shires’ husband Jason Isbell on guitar. When it comes to the Highwomen’s terrific self-titled debut album, out this Friday, it’s tempting to try and think about the record outside of the constructs of gender. The “women in music” trope is an enticing one, particularly when it comes to criticism, and part of the reason we too often consider a woman’s work in a vacuum is because we think of it as just that: a woman’s work, and not just work.

One week ahead of the release of While I’m Livin’, her first all-new album in 17 years, Tanya Tucker reveals the LP’s emotional closing track, “Bring My Flowers Now.” A prime showcase for the Texas-born legend’s wise yet wistful vocals, the song’s powerful message — to show appreciation for those we cherish while we still have that opportunity — is likely to spark a national run on florists’ shops, or at the very least a few tear-filled phone calls. “Don’t spend time, tears and money on my ol’ breathless body,...

Don Dilego, “Your Great Escape”
A longtime collaborator of New York staple Jesse Malin, Don Dilego makes his own kind of big-city alt-country music. On “Your Great Escape,” he grapples with the departure of a former flame whose memory still burns brightly. He’s angry one minute and nostalgic the next, promising his ex that he’ll “always wish you well. . .on your long, long ride through hell.

Spend a day with Brandi Carlile at her property outside of Seattle, and it takes approximately 60 seconds to be thrust into the middle of her extended family — which, on the day Rolling Stone visited in early January, included her bandmates Phil and Tim Hanseroth; Laura and Lydia Rogers from the Secret Sisters; musician Cheyenne Medders; video director Mark Slagle; a huge Rhodesian Ridgeback dog and several chickens. Brandi Carlile is cruising down a steep road on her four-wheeler, her teal jacket flapping in the wind as she makes a sharp turn to her home in Maple Valley, Washington, a rural mountain town about 45 minutes outside of Seattle. In something of an upset, This is America by Childish Gambino won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year, marking Donald Glover’s third award on the evening. The award goes to Donald Glover & Ludwig Goransson, the songwriters, the win no doubt powered by its accompanying groundbreaking video.

Last year Bruno Mars was the king of the Grammy Awards winning all six of his races. This year, one of the artists he bested for many of those prizes, Kendrick Lamar, leads with a whopping eight nominations. Many of these bids come for his work on the “Black Panther” soundtrack and the chart-topping single “All the Stars.” Likewise, Lady Gaga earned four nominations for “Shallow,” the love ballad from her film “A Star is Born.” Both of their songs also contend at the Academy Awards.
The four general field categories — Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist — are the top prizes at the Grammys. While the nominees are drawn from across a variety of music genres, the winners of these Grammy Awards tend to be the biggest pop and rock acts like Mars, Adele, Taylor Swift, and Mumford and Sons.
