"Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" is a memorable entry into the "Trek" canon for several reasons. The 1984 movie hesitantly followed up franchise high point "The Wrath of Kahn," introduced new Federation starship designs, and resurrected everyone's favorite half-human, half-Vulcan officer, played by Leonard Nimoy. "The Search For Spock" is a story for Spock lovers, and though it doesn't quite match the thrilling emotional and narrative highs of its predecessors, it still feels like "Star Trek" boldly going where it never has before. Unfortunately, though, there's one thing "Star Trek III" is missing: Kirstie Alley's Vulcan junior Lieutenant Saavik.
Saavik does appear in "The Search For Spock," but future "Cheers" star Alley is missing, replaced by actor Robin Curtis. Curtis does a fine job as Saavik and would go on to reprise the role in the next "Star Trek" film as well, but the recast is jarring for close watchers of the saga.

Exclusive: BET+ has ordered a New Orleans-set spinoff of Carl Weber’s The Family Business, with Brandon T. Jackson set to star.
He also will serve as an associate producer on the eight-episode series, which is set to begin production in March.
Based on Weber’s bestselling crime drama book series, which wrapped its fourth season in October 2022, The Family Business follows the Duncans, an upstanding, tight-knit family led by L.C. Duncan (Ernie Hudson) that by day owns and operates an exotic car dealership in New York. By night, their business activities are more illicit in nature.
In the spinoff, when the New Orleans side of the Duncan family gets caught in a vicious turf war with corrupt politicians, dirty land developers, and ruthless crime bosses all vying for the family’s underground casino and night club business, they call on their relatives from New York to help wield their own brand of justice.

Evidently the most successful outing of a Korean filmmaker in the West, at least in terms of box office success, “Snowpiercer” is based on the French climate fiction graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette. Featuring an all-star Hollywood cast that resulted in approximately 80 percent of the film being shot in English, and most of the shooting taking place in Prague, the production costs reached $40 million, making “Snowpiercer” the most expensive Korean production at the time. However, the film would go on to screen at a number of international festivals, winning a plethora of awards and eventually finding distribution all over the world, with its profit at the end of its run reaching the amount of $87 million worldwide.

Jamie Lee Curtis is once again defending Ariana DeBose, this time due to a joke made at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards at the expense of the “West Side Story” Oscar winner. “The Last of Us” star Bella Ramsey and Anthony Ramos presented the Critics Choice Award in the best song category and noted how the nominees were split between songs “delivered by some of the most famous voices in the music industry” and “actors who also think that they are singers”.
When the camera cut to DeBose, she did not seem all too pleased that she was lumped into the “actors who also think that they are singers” category. Not only is DeBose a Broadway veteran and a Tony Award nominee, but the performer also won the Oscar for best supporting actress thanks to her singing and dancing-heavy role in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” DeBose took to Instagram...

No nudes is good news, says Julia Roberts, who explained in an interview for her British Vogue cover debut why she avoids baring all on-camera.
The 56-year-old Roberts said to screenwriter Richard Curtis that she wants to champion other women who feel pressured to strip on camera.
“You know, not to be criticizing others’ choices, but for me to not take off my clothes in a movie or be vulnerable in physical ways is a choice that I guess I make for myself.”
It may be genetic. Roberts said she did her family tree with Finding Your Roots star Dr. Henry Gates and discovered, “I am DNA cousins with Gloria Steinem.”
She also revealed that she didn’t want to strip off for the sake of her children.

Julia Roberts was interviewed for a Vogue U.K. fashion spread by her “Notting Hill” director Richard Curtis, who asked the Oscar winner if she feels “responsibility to other women” when choosing her movie roles as an A-list star for well over three decades.
“Do you ever think, ‘I’m representing something?'” Curtis asked Roberts.
“I think it would be more to the point that the things I choose not to do are representative of me,” Roberts answered, noting that “my G-rated career” is an example.
“You know, not to be criticizing others’ choices, but for me to not take off my clothes in a movie or be vulnerable in physical ways is a choice that I guess I make for myself,” Roberts said about how she’s chosen to represent herself. “But in effect, I’m choosing not to do something as opposed to choosing to do something.

Jamie Lee Curtis Drew Inspiration From This ‘Three’s Company’ Star for Her ‘Freaky Friday’ Character
Actor Jamie Lee Curtis had to rely on a lot of physical comedy for her role in Freaky Friday. So, the star took a cue from this Three’s Company alum to inform her performance.
How this ‘Three’s Company’ star affected Jamie Lee Curtis’ ‘Freaky Friday’ performance John Ritter, Suzanne Somers, Joyce Dewitt | ABC Photo Archives/Getty Images
Curtis had the chance to show off her comedic chops by doing the 2003 feature Freaky Friday. The movie saw Curtis and Lohan playing a mother and daughter who switched bodies. In a resurfaced interview with Phase 9, Curtis asserted that Freaky Friday might’ve been the most successful feature she made at the time. The project fell in Curtis’ lap during a period where she was exploring interests other than acting. But apart from liking the film’s script, everything about Freaky Friday accommodated Curtis’ situation. In the end, Curtis felt she had to do the movie.

Warning: Seeing as some readers are sensitive to this point, this post will discuss dogs that are killed in movies.
In John Carpenter's 1978 slasher film "Halloween," the masked serial killer Michael Myers -- in addition to murdering five people -- kills two dogs. The first kill is not shown, and is only alluded to in a grisly dialogue exchange. When Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasance) and Sheriff Leigh Brackett (Charles Cyphers) investigate Michael Myers' childhood home, they see a dead dog left on the floor, kept tastefully off-camera. "He must have gotten hungry," Dr. Loomis notes. Yes, Michael Myers ate a dog.
Later in the film, a more shocking scene of animal violence occurs. At the home of Linsday Wallace (Kyle Richards), the family dog barks at Michael who approaches the home from the shadows, targeting Linsday's babysitter Annie (Nancy Loomis). The dog, Lester, does not meet a pleasant fate,...

Filmmaker Richard Curtis has been looking back on his 2003 rom-com ‘Love Actually’. He discussed more ways he wished he could improve his film and said that he wished he had included more religions in the film.
The film had a divided fanbase due to lack of diversity, cruel jokes, and stereotyped characters. Curtis himself has noted that the star studded movie failed on a cultural level. He touched upon a storyline that was cut from the film that featured acclaimed actresses Anne Reid and Frances de La Tour.
He said: “We were meant to have an LGBTQ story [in Love Actually] but it got cut and I feel as though I let myself down there. And the diversity issue is very different now. It would’ve been lovely to make the film more culturally rich. To have had Hanukkah, to have had Diwali in there.”

The seventh episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves finally reached the cusp of where it was always intended to reach. This was never a simple tale that was going to show us the conquests of the legendary figure of Bass Reeves, the first colored Deputy U.S. Marshall, but a story of how the resolve of upholding your duties inevitably collides with the responsibility to question the status quo as a citizen. Bass had done his duty diligently over the years, catching criminals in Indian Territory, Arkansas. But was the ‘law’ that he was working forever cognizant of why there were people like Esau Pierce who were pure evil as far as Bass was concerned? In a country at the time when slavery had just been declared illegal, Bass really had to think about what it would take to make some people understand that it shouldn’t matter if it’s illegal; it’s inhuman,...

Leave the World Behind, Sam Esmail’s latest movie has managed to stir the pot right after it was dropped on Netflix. The star-studded cast, the tension-filled build-up laced with ample social commentary, the dry humor, and most importantly, the very cheeky, ambiguous ending have made Leave the World Behind an instant genre classic. Not everyone is too happy about the movie getting this much praise, even after not really bringing anything strikingly original to the table, but the overall response has been pretty positive. If you’ve liked watching Leave the World Behind and are now in search of similar kinds of movies, then here’s a list that’s going to come in handy for you.
1. 10 Cloverfield Lane
It can actually be said that 10 Cloverfield Lane begins where Leave the World Behind ends. Yes, I am referring to the bunker here, which is where everyone wants to end up during an apocalypse.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has reunited with her fellow ‘Freak Friday’ co-star Lindsay Lohan after 20 years. Sharing a strong moment together, Curtis said that Lohan has grown up a lot over the years. Curtis, 64, played Lohan’s mother in the 2003 hit film gave a clever and cheeky nod to the movie, during her celebrations of the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike which had lasted for over 118 days.
Sharing a picture of the two together on Instagram, the ‘Halloween’ actress captioned: “Too late. You Grew Up and So Beautifully! Well, it’s Friday, and the strike is over so hopefully, we can switch places again in the near future! @lindsaylohan @disney.”
For the unversed, the “switch places again” refers to a line from the film in which both Curtis and Lohan’s characters wake up to discover that they have switched bodies and lives, much to their horror leading to a lot of comedy.

Is it any wonder that Bass Reeves was the inspiration for The Lone Ranger?
We meet Bass in the middle of an ongoing battle Civil War, where he’s fighting side-by-side with his “owner,” Confederate Army Commander George Reeves.
Bass promises George he will follow him into battle and fire when necessary, and he does just that, shooting with laser-sharp precision, never missing his mark.
Like all wars, it’s a disgusting scene, and this one culminates in white men masquerading as Native Americans, scalping their opponents after their victory.
On Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 1, we learn quickly that the brightest, most well-adjusted man in any room is Bass himself. Despite his circumstances, he’s a moral man who is fearless in the face of moral ambiguity or outright absence.

The vignettes that open I Slay on Christmas, the new anthology film from producer Phil Herman, are almost hallucinogenic in their disassociated content and styles. A man runs through the woods only to find his adversary, a pine cone, floating in the air ahead of him as a voice intones his fate. Another man sits on a couch as the weatherman talks about unseasonably warm weather and how it’s helping a virus to spread. When we see him again, he’s bleeding from the nose and mouth and looks like a zombie.

The Academy Awards recruited Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane to host the 85th Oscars. But not everyone was happy with the way MacFarlane handled the ceremony, including Jamie Lee Curtis.
Jamie Lee Curtis criticized the way Seth MacFarlane hosted the Oscars Jamie Lee Curtis | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
MacFarlane injected some of his own Family Guy humor into the Academy Awards. Back in 2013, his Oscars celebration was full of satirical humor and musical numbers poking fun at the film industry. For instance, MacFarlane prepared Oscar-viewers and attendees for what’s to come with a song titled “We Saw Your Boobs.” As the name suggests, the song focused on the many A-listers in Hollywood who went topless on screen.
The song was as famous as it was infamous depending on who was asked. Although some enjoyed the piece, others felt MacFarlane went too far. Curtis was in the camp of the latter.

David Gordon Green's 2018 slasher film "Halloween," a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 slasher film also called "Halloween," famously ignored the nine "Halloween" sequels and remakes made from 1981 to 2009. The original film starred Jamie Lee Curtis as a teenage babysitter named Laurie Strode who ran afoul of a mysterious, silent masked killer named Michael Myers. In the original "Halloween II," it was revealed that Laurie was Michael's long-lost sister, a conceit Green would handily abandon for his 2018 update. Instead, Laurie was, 40 years later, still wounded by the events of the 1978 film, and had become a ragged survivalist, outfitting her home with booby traps and training herself how to use weapons in the off chance that Michael should ever escape the local mental institution and begin his killing spree again. Perhaps predictably, that very thing happens.
Green's "Halloween" ends with Laurie trapping Michael in a burning building, seemingly to die forever.

And when audiences rejected his (brilliant) non-Michael Myers installment, "Halloween III: Season of the Witch," he checked out entirely, allowing the producers to mine the white-masked fiend for a series of quick-and-progressively-silly cash-ins.

Retail-focused sister streamers QVC+ and Hsn+ are marking their second year of original holiday programming with a new TV movie starring Ashlee Simpson.
Titled “The Recipe Files,” the holiday baking mystery — filled with cameos from QVC hosts and plenty of plugs for tie-in products and partner brands — is directed by Lindsay Hartley and will launch on QVC+ Nov. 24.
That film marks the consumer-product-focused streamer’s second holiday original movie, following last year’s “Holly and the Hot Chocolate,” but is not the only piece of new holiday content set to rollout on QVC+ and Hsn+ this fall and winter, with additional titles including a new series from Curtis Stone; competition “The Ultimate Gift Wrapping Challenge”; food show “Seasoned,” featuring the personal stories of chefs including Carla Hall; curated holiday retail therapy in weekly series “The Edit”; and more.
