Emerald Fennell's new film "Saltburn" is about a lonely young college student named Oliver (Barry Keoghan) who does a small favor for a wildly handsome classmate named Felix (Jacob Elordi), who, in exchange, offers Oliver a trip to his palatial estate. While there, Oliver falls into the dark psychological hole ordinarily occupied by the morals-free idle rich. The parties get wilder and wilder, and Oliver gets pulled deeper and deeper into Felix's world.
"Saltburn" is just the latest film on Keoghan's filmography wherein he plays an intense soul or deeply weird creep. Keoghan has proven to be something of an institution in recent years, having appeared in "The Batman" (as the Joker), "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," "Dunkirk," "The Green Knight," "Eternals," and "The Banshees of Inisherin." When Keoghan appears on screen, you know that things are about to get sweaty. He is proving to be one of...

This post contains spoilers for Emerald Fennell's new film "Saltburn."
In "Saltburn," Barry Keoghan plays a nerdy boarding school student named Oliver Quick who has trouble making friends at school. He eventually manages to attract the attention of Felix (Jacob Elordi), an ultra-rich and ultra-popular classmate that everyone, regardless of gender or sexuality, seems to be attracted to. Oliver and Felix slowly bond, and Felix offers to host Oliver at his sprawling estate, Saltburn, for the span of a weeks-long school break. There is a notable scene wherein Felix gives Oliver a tour of the manse, flippantly pointing out the various palatial rooms individually.
When finally at Saltburn, however, Oliver's true colors soon begin to show. He's not the shy wilting flower everyone had previously assumed, but a conniving sneak who has a plot of his own. It seems Oliver doesn't just want to be Felix's friend, but he...

Emerald Fennell's sophomore feature, "Saltburn," plays like a gothic romance. There's sex, there's intrigue, and eventually things turn to murder. As our own Jacob Hall said in his review, "it's one of the bleakest films of 2023, and a real bad time at the movies."
This is a film full of twists and turns, one that plays with the particulars of British class, and a film where Barry Keoghan essentially plays a hornier and queerer Tom Ripley.
Much like "Promising Young Woman," Fennell's "Saltburn" ends very much open to interpretation, with a finale that offers as many answers as it does questions. This is a psychosexual thriller that is often disturbing, quite horny, and features one of the best villains of the year.

2023 has certainly given all those aspiring filmmakers on YouTube a good reason to keep chasing their dreams. First, there was the underground success of "Skinarmarink," an avant-garde horror film that was conceived by writer and director Kyle Edward Ball back when he was operating his YouTube channel, Bitesized Nightmares. Now, Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian brothers who have amassed millions of subscribers thanks to their horror-comedy shorts on their YouTube channel, RackaRacka, are riding a wave of critical accolades thanks to their feature directing debut, "Talk to Me."
The film, which was written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman, centers on a group of Australian teenagers who decide to mess with a supernatural artifact in the shape of a dead medium's embalmed hand and forearm, only to learn the hard way what happens when you recklessly meddle with these sorts of things. There are very few independent entertainment companies that have garnered the attention and acclaim that A24 has amassed over a relatively short amount of time. There are certainly more niche production companies like Oscilloscope Laboratories and SpectreVision that have earned a loyal following from tapeheads and hardcore genre fans, but A24 is operating on a completely different wavelength.
Having found success in the horror space with Ari Aster's "Hereditary" and "Midsommar," A24 just swept last year's Oscars with wins in all of the major categories for the tripped-out family adventure "Everything, Everywhere All At Once." Even the average moviegoer is familiar with the brand, and they trust the stamp of quality that's associated with it. If A24 is behind a particular movie, chances are it's going to be a high quality piece of entertainment that's trying to do something unique and different.

There is a big stigma around filmmakers on YouTube. There have been several movies centered on or about YouTubers, and the vast majority have been comedies -- following the success of 2008's "Ryan and Sean's Not So Excellent Adventure" -- and yet, none of them had the level of acclaim or attention from filmmakers like Jordan Peele and Steven Spielberg until "Talk to Me" made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year. The movie is directed and co-written by Australian filmmakers Danny & Michael Philippou, known from their YouTube channel RackaRacka, where the two make wild action and horror-centric videos with tons of rather impressive visual effects and stunts.
Ahead of the theatrical release of "Talk to Me," our own Jacob Hall talked to the Philippou brothers about how YouTube helped their filmmaking career. As Danny Philippou described it, they made videos to try out new things, like a sinking film set,...

The filmmakers behind the year's most terrifying horror film, "Talk to Me," have a fascinating backstory that rivals any of the supernatural chills and thrills in their feature film debut. The Australian sibling duo of Danny and Michael Philippou first got their start as YouTubers, as we've previously written about here. But don't let their humble beginnings fool you. The pair of movie aficionados certainly didn't shy away from wearing their cinematic influences on their sleeves when it came time to write and film "Talk to Me."
The filmmakers revealed as much during a recent interview with /Film's Jacob Hall. In our review of the film, Chris Evangelista made note of the pervasive Sam Raimi influence, particularly through the usage of gore and makeup that feels of a piece with "The Evil Dead." But as it turns out, their specific inspirations for their newest film go even deeper than that.

This article spoils a great joke from "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Proceed with caution!
After "Game of Thrones" inspired a wave of fantasy projects seeking to replicate the tone of HBO's dark, gritty, depressingly violent fantasy series, it's almost surprising when we get a new fantasy TV show or film that remembers you can have fun with the genre. This is why the scene where the harfoots sing a little walking song in "The Rings of Power" is so special and heartfelt; why "The Dragon Prince" bringing epic fantasy to young audiences is so important; and why "The Legend of Vox Machina" capturing the chaos and silly energy of tabletop RPG sessions makes for such an enjoyable experience.
This is to say, there were many ways "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" could have failed miserably. It could have been too meta like the "D&d" episode of "Community,...

This year's SXSW Film Festival opened with the star-studded world premiere of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" at the historic Paramount Theater. Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Daisy Head, Rege-Jean Page, and writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were in attendance and got to bask in the glow of the explosive audience reaction.
SXSW audiences are notoriously excitable, and when that 2000+ strong crowd sees a comedy they like, the very walls shake with their laughter and applause, as evidenced by this glowing review from /Film's Jacob Hall. "Dungeons & Dragons" played very well, and that's a testament to the approach Goldstein and Daley took in crafting a movie that can work for an audience that has never rolled a D20 in their lives while also throwing in some big Easter eggs for the hardcore fans.

The year is 2023. Famous movies are now roleplaying games. Famous roleplaying games are now movies. The geeks have inherited the Earth, and they are not content to take your 20-sided dice. They want your three-day opening weekend box office grosses too.
Typically, Cardboard Cinema -- this column by yours truly -- is not blessed with this abundance of cinematic riches. Part of the fun for me is to find games that capture the essence of popular cultures, such as last month's "R'lyehwatch." But this month? This month we're flush, exploring blockbuster franchises of screens big and small with "The Walking Dead" and "Terminator." Oh, and we have a new movie this weekend about dragons in dungeons of some sort directed by the comedic geniuses behind "Game Night." So, you know, slow news week in the land of tabletop.

"Mrs. Davis," Peacock's upcoming sci-fi comedy drama action genre mashup television series, paints a portrait of artificial intelligence that's arguably more sinister than mere killer robots. /Film's own Jacob Hall called the series "the most audacious new science-fiction series since 'Westworld'" after catching a preview at SXSW. Co-creators Damon Lindelof, who's become a legend in the annals of science fiction television for his work on "Watchmen," "Lost," and "The Leftovers," and Tara Hernandez, who has written for and executive produced "The Big Bang Theory" and "Young Sheldon," have created a way to portray A.I. that fits more in line with the addictive pull of social media apps than it does the typical computer-gone-rogue. When it was announced that a new "Dungeons & Dragons" movie was on the horizon, expectations were that this iteration would attempt to take the fantasy adventure RPG to a new level of respectability. There seemed to be a promise of more high fantasy and epic storytelling that would take the material more seriously. After the full trailer came out, it's abundantly clear that there's a grandiose scale to "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" featuring plenty of creatures and obstacles for our heroes to navigate. But there's a sense of absurdity that proves the dragon tongue is still kept firmly planted in cheek.
If it all seems a little too ridiculous, the new trailer is filled with a surprising amount of critical praise for the film, including /Film's Jacob Hall who called the film "a fantasy adventure unashamed to be about how we define love and family" in his review out of SXSW.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley's upcoming fantasy film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," due in theaters on March 31, will be the fourth live-action film to be based on the celebrated role-playing game first published by Gary Gygax and Dave Arenson in 1974. The game version of "Dungeons & Dragons" has had a colorful and fraught history, offering a popular activity that both nerds and metalheads could enjoy, while also often attracting the ire of right-wing censorship groups who felt its themes of magic and pretend were somehow damaging the minds of the nation's youth.

TV has been a source of comfort for well over half a century now. Some people watch sitcoms to ease out of a troubled day, others watch reality shows for that sweet unscripted content. Others, like me, watch Kiefer Sutherland kick people's asses on TV to feel better about life.
Sure, there are plenty of other actors who do great jobs being ass-kickers on television -- "Deadwood" and "Justified" star Timothy Olyphant and "Reacher" star Alan Ritchson and his giant hands come to mind. But there is something about Kiefer Sutherland f***ing people up in particular that is mesmerizing.
This harkens back to Sutherland's time on "24," of course, a rather problematic show that nevertheless offered thrills and excitement on a weekly basis. Sure, Jack Bauer was a war criminal, and Sutherland did a wonderful job portraying the character as a tough and scary guy who could easily mess you up.

In a year where horror is especially thriving, it's always fun to see movies like "Smile" succeed. Akin to what happened with "Lights Out," Parker Finn's chiller was born out of a short film ("Laura Hasn't Slept"), where its effectively simple premise left enough room for a major studio to give it a boost in a feature-length expansion. The familiar foundation of "Smile" may derive from the bones of "It Follows" and "The Ring," but the meat of its story is an eerie beast all its own. Where Blumhouse failed to make smiling scary with "Truth or Dare," Finn ties the natural human reaction to a silently twisted story about the long-standing effects of trauma and mental illness.
It all starts when Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) meets with a patient (Caitlin Statsey), who violently dies by suicide in her office while sporting a truly menacing grimace on her face.

Every year has its share of horror hits, but it's safe to say that 2022 has been extraordinarily kind to the genre, especially this fall. Seeing the likes of "Barbarian," "Halloween Ends, "Terrifier 2," and "Pearl" thrive at the box office within a two-month span is the kind of streak you always dream about but rarely see come to fruition. It sent a widespread message across the industry that horror, whether it comes from a major studio or an independent production, is one of the major factors keeping movie theaters alive. To further drive the point home, "Smile" pulled a real sneak attack this past month.

In the conversations about the scariest horror movie moments ever, Tobe Hooper's 1974 classic "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" tends to land in the top ten, usually for its jarring introduction to slasher icon Leatherface. Beyond the chainsaw and the dysfunctional cannibal family who revere it, the "Texas Chain Saw" franchise has put great stock in its stifling Lone Star state setting, particularly the Sawyer family home which so many victims stumble onto. Filled with real animal bones and shot to the ambient discordance of Hooper and Wayne Bell, the grimy farmhouse was as much an antagonist as its flesh-eating maniacs.

In the upcoming miniseries "Welcome to Chippendales," actor Kumail Nanjiani plays Somen "Steve" Banerjee, who founded the famous erotic all-male revue show in 1979. The story goes that Banerjee bought a disused nightclub and made it lucrative by featuring stripping and, as was novel at the time, mud wrestling. It was the all-male Chippendales revue, though, that really put him on the map, and Chippendales became a household name. To this day, one can still see Chippendales shows in Las Vegas. Banerjee's story was also rife with criminality, and he was eventually arrested for attempted arson, and for hiring assassins to murder rivals. All the details will presumably be covered in the miniseries, set to air on Hulu between November 22, 2022 and January 3, 2023.
Recently, /Film's own Jacob Hall interviewed Nanjiani about playing Banerjee. The actor talked about how his character, born in Bombay came to idolize and internalize the superficial trappings of American culture.

With the trailer for "Magic Mike: The Last Dance" about to drop and Hulu's new series "Welcome to Chippendales" set to premiere on November 22, the historical legacy of the male revue is in great hands. Even though actor Kumail Nanjiani molded himself into a chiseled, muscular God for Marvel's "The Eternals," he might not be the first face that comes to mind when imagining an origin story about how the Chippendales brand came to be. The founder of Chippendales was Indian immigrant Somen "Steve" Banerjee, a seemingly reserved, ethical businessman on the surface who, in reality, led a life of corruption that nearly destroyed his rising empire.
Nanjiani plays Banerjee in the new series, which chronicles the start of the first Chippendales club in Los Angeles. The provocative brand went on to become a mainstream cultural phenomenon in the late '70s and throughout the excess of the 1980's.

Before he became a superhero in "Eternals," a runaway Jedi in "Obi-Wan Kenobi," or even the hapless rideshare driver Stu in "Stuber," actor Kumail Nanjiani worked his way up through the industry thanks to his stand-up comedy in New York City. The unbelievable story of how he and his wife, creative partner, and fellow screenwriter Emily V. Gordon ultimately met and fell in love defies expectations, which naturally led to the semi-autobiographical dramedy "The Big Sick" in 2017 (you can read /Film's original review by Ethan Anderton here).

In news that is sure to make gorehounds grin, Paramount+ and Paramount Home Entertainment have announced that the year's biggest original horror movie, "Smile," will be available to stream and purchase digitally in the U.S. and Canada this Tuesday, November 15, 2022. "Smile" hit theaters on the last day of September and just recently crossed the 200 million mark at the worldwide box office, and the latest numbers indicate (via Box Office Mojo) that it's just shy of the 211 million haul of China's "Nice View," currently the year's highest-grossing original film.
