- Stanley is a desk clerk at a New York city hotel. A scalper talks him into taking two tickets to the opening night of the Metropolitain Opera, but he thinks they'll be hard to resell. He begs and badgers a visiting couple into taking them, only to then be threatened by gangsters to get them back.
- When Stanley is again late for a date Celia refuses to believe his excuse. He tells her he was taken captive by a group of robbers but has no proof to show her.
- Stanley's girlfriend Celia develops a crush on a popular crooner. Stanley feels he can't compete with the handsome singer and resigns himself to losing his sweetheart.
- It's time for the Plaza Sussex annual variety show that features music and comedic acts. Stanley is made the main attraction due to his varied talents and gets nervous that he might fail.
- As Stanley and Celia's relationship progresses the two consider tying the knot. But deciding to visit a married couple exposes them to things they hadn't considered. The two have an honest discussion about their future.

- Celia plans a surprise party for Stanley's birthday and gets his friends from work to go along with the plan.
- Pride keeps a lover's quarrel smoldering as Stanley and Celia find that from small bickering grows mighty arguments. Stanley however can't bear the suffering and devises an approach to the spat so that neither losses face.
