- The final episode of the first series sees Alan's erstwhile girlfriend Mary come to an important decision about her future. Dr Cameron calls on two elderly spinsters who haven't spoken to each other in 15 years. He causes Alan and Janet great concern when he comes down with pneumonia. There's an early role for Jane Asher as a teenager with an abusive stepfather.
- Dr Finlay treats a travelling salesman for a dog bite, and soon after a rabid dog is shot by a local farmer. Dr Finlay has the vaccine sent from Paris, but can the victim of the dog bite be tracked down in time?
- Tam, a patient of Dr Finlay, is a local character, fond of a dram, and lives a rustic lifestyle on the outskirts of Tannochbrae. There is more to him than meets the eye though, and visitors from Glasgow may force him to confront his past.
- Dr Cameron's sudden erratic behavior is a source of concern for Dr Finlay and Janet.
- When Peggy Davidson, the wife of a wealthy newspaper owner, returns to Tannochbrae, Cameron is deeply concerned. When she was last in the area, she attempted suicide. Relations with her husband are still somewhat strained and he feels that she may make another attempt.
- Dr.Finlay after his defeat in the recent by election, is far from his usual good humored self. It might be that he is just run down but, when he insults a wealthy hypochondriac and is blatantly rude to Dr. Snoddie, we begin to realize that there is more to it than that.
- The ethics and success rate of the smallpox vaccination are called into question when a local baby dies.
- While in Glasgow to collect a leg brace for a young patient, Dr Finlay encounters a showman 'doctor' who later comes to Tannochbrae and treats the same patient with his 'scientific' methods, much to Dr Finlay's chagrin.
- In 1928 Glasgow, Alan Finlay studies to become a qualified doctor, and dreams of becoming a surgeon. His landlord goes missing and Finlay follows a hunch which leads him to the town of Tannochbrae and a meeting which will change his life.
- It's December 1931 and Dr Cameron is about to turn 65. He announces that he is considering retirement so that Dr Finlay will take over the practice entirely. It leads to tension and emotion in Arden House, while the local dignitaries respond by offering him the freedom of Tannochbrae and Knoxhill.
- Meg MacBain, heavily pregnant, walks seven miles to Dr Cameron's. There is doubt over the paternity of her child but will Dr Finlay's initiative provide the answer.
- Christmas 1929. A young girl at the hospital may not live until Christmas so the staff call upon Drs Cameron, Finlay and Snoddie to provide a special festive show for the children's ward. But it's Janet who steals the show with her storytelling.
- When his car breaks down in the glen near Knoxhill, Dr Cameron encounters a solitary piper who believes he's leading an entire battalion. Wounded during the war, he's only recently been released from hospital. Teacher Mr Andrews is at odds with Lord Moorcroft over the erection of a war memorial in Tannochbrae.
