- The lady editor of a crime magazine hires Phillip Marlowe to find the wife of her boss. The private detective soon finds himself involved in murder.

In the end, the true culprit is revealed.

Things come to a head a few weeks later when Bert is approached by a police officer who has information and suggests that he is in need of protection. Bert doesn't quite realize who he needs protection from, however.
- Henry Taylor visits the town of Kirkland where, three years before, a bank employee, Arnold Mathias, had been convicted of stealing $200,000 from the bank where he worked. None of the money has been found and Mathias always maintained his innocence. It would appear that Mathias had recently been killed in an attempted prison escape and Taylor visits the bank manager telling him he's an author researching a book on the robbery. It turns out that Taylor is after something altogether different and all is not altogether what it seems.

Lottie suggests that they take Claire up to the waterfalls to enjoy the view. He knows exactly what Lottie has in mind, and resolves the situation. He awaits the decision of the coroner's jury.

Mrs. Bixby decides to pawn the coat but her elaborate scheme to explain the coat to her husband doesn't quite go as planned.
- A woman who's been hypnotized at a house party picks up a pair of shears and stabs her husband in the back, apparently influenced by the spirit of a woman who committed the same crime over a hundred years before.

Ernest Fisher learns that Milton Potter has been released from prison after serving his 15-year sentence, he tells his subordinates about this very strange case. Potter was a bookkeeper for a bank. He did his work well and was reliable but people knew very little about his private life. When it's determined that he embezzled $200,000 he is eventually sent to jail. No one can quite believe that he was really the type to steal, and he never tells anyone what happened to the money. After his release, Fisher visits him and incredibly, Potter tells him he's not the type to run and returns the stolen money. Only later, aboard a cruise ship does he explain to a fellow passenger that there is "method" to his apparent madness.
- Cash Bentley is having a hard time coping with middle age. A one-time champion hurdler, he now drinks a bit too much and doesn't quite earn enough money to pay for the lifestyle he would like to provide for his family, such as a membership at the local country club. Despondent, he decides to try one last "race," with tragic results.
- Tony Lorca arrives in a small town in the middle of a blizzard to a less-than-pleasant reception in the local saloon. One of the locals says he's seen him before but leaves the saloon before trouble starts. Lorca loses his gun in a poker game at which point the same local returns with a sheriff's poster: Lorca is a wanted man with a $5,000 reward on his head. Seeing no way out, Lorca auctions himself to the highest bidder, offering to turn himself in without a fuss. His plan is to spend the money and have a good time before he meets the hangman. Turns out he killed the saloon girl's husband some time ago and she has something else in mind. But is Lorca really who he says he is?
- Helen Parch shares a party-line telephone with several others. She likes to talk on the phone quite a bit but also listens in on others. She's warned by the police one day that a Mr. Miller, with whom she once shared the party line, has broken out of prison and that her life may be in danger. Years before, Miller needed to contact a doctor when his wife was ill, and Helen refused to get off the line. Miller's wife died and he turned to a life of crime. Now he may be after Helen.
- An imprisoned lifer breaks out of prison to meet the pen pal he has fallen in love with, but finds only her middle-aged aunt at home.
- Mr. Clarke is incredibly terrified of guns being pointed at him, and feels he must destroy anyone who would do that to him, like he does to one young robber.

Treadwell initially rejects the offer out of hand, but the old lady is becoming more and more demanding, further eroding Treadwell's tolerance of her constant aggravation. In the end, he accepts Bunce's offer but then ponders what his own children might do when the time comes.
- Desperate for attention, particularly from the prom king, Susan Harper fabricates a crime. As the requests from the police and press feed her craving, she adds details-never suspecting those details could become a problem.

Her price for not going to the police is to make her one dream come true.

He proposes to have himself handcuffed, tied with a rope, locked into a trunk and dumped into a nearby river. His promoter agrees but his wife Wanda and her lover Tommy arrange for the inevitable. When a coroner demands to examine Ferlini's body, it seems Ferlini may have made the greatest escape of all.
- Amos Duff's mortuary is struggling to sell anything but economy funerals. However, when Duff finds something unusual about a wound on a corpse brought in by the deceased's business partner, he feels certain he can sell a "Class A" funeral.
- A rich old man proposes to his secretary. Claiming poor health, he says she will inherit $11 million. She says no but her fiancé convinces her, figuring to marry a rich wife. On each anniversary for 25 years, the old man gives her a pearl.

She agrees to break it off with Cyril whom she describes as an older, gentler man who wouldn't harm a flea. When they finally meet, Eliot finds Cyril much as Enid described him. In fact, Cyril describes himself as a throwback - someone who values honor and civility above all else. Cyril also has no intention of giving Enid up and so puts into action a plan to ensure that she will remain his.

He served four years for robbery and on his release, seems like a mild-mannered man who is intent on making a go of it. He recounts to the warden and prison psychiatrist the events during his two days of freedom as they try to determine what may have caused him to get drunk and break up a bar in his old neighborhood. The psychiatrist is convinced that something in the outside world frightened him and probes to determine exactly what that was. Little do they know that there is something altogether different taking place.
- An unscrupulous, philandering attorney defending a hit-and-run driver pokes holes in the testimony of the main eye-witness by challenging his visual acuity. The unhappy wife of the attorney later uses this to her advantage.
- For decades two branches of the Farraday family have quarreled about which branch of the family should control it. Philip Andrews, engaged to one of the "have-nots," is charged with murder after already being accused of fraud in the case.
- Peter Baxter decides to test his heirs' loyalties. He pretends to change his will, cutting them all out and leaving his estate to his caretaker, James Hing, who is then supposed to burn down Baxter's house with a medical cadaver in it.
- A fortune teller tells Pat Kean that she will get married but it will end tragically. She later marries her boss, Max Armstead, a client and good friend of Mason's. However, a few weeks later, Max dies from an apparent case of poisoning.
- At Caresse Cosmetics, Max Pompey fires Karen Lewis for allegedly selling new formulas to competitor Gabe Rawson. Karen goes missing and her boyfriend, Peter Nichols, consults Perry Mason. She may be hiding something from her childhood.
- Dorrie Ambler bursts into Perry's office so he can verify who she is. She won't give details but says she is mixed up in some scheme. Della spots a gun in her purse. When the man who hired her is killed, she is charged. But, who is she?
- John Brooks arrives at the elderly Stone sisters' home saying he knew a nephew who was declared illegitimate as a youth. Due to his recall of facts they think he is really their nephew. Ernest Stone is murdered in a tangled web of deceit.
- Reba Burgess has kept a small mine functioning, which helps keep the locals in Burgess, California working, based on diamonds she found herself. When her dead husband's ex-partner returns, he wants half the diamonds but instead is killed.
- Clara Hammon marries disabled "John Brant," but the bridegroom is really actor Earl Mauldin. Through a series of crafty moves, the real John Brant has gained control of everything that Jo Ann Blanchard and her brother Terry have inherited.
- Scot Cahill has a contract with Karl Magovern to take his party to kelp beds near Mexico each weekend. Magovern canceled but suddenly decides to go. Perry is called when Magovern is found murdered and suspected of smuggling stolen gold.
- After a two-year absence, Hartley Basset returns to reclaim his company. His wife Sybil is at a stockholders' meeting to vote with company president Peter Dawson to restructure the business after charges that her husband embezzled funds.
- Herman Albright, who has a crush on the model he handles for an agency, asks his wife for a divorce when her gambling debts become too much. He agrees to perform a favor to pay the debt. It results in his murder and the model is charged.
- While walking down the main street in North Fork, John Hallager is shot from someone hiding in the shadows. Marshal Micah Torrance arrests Billy Mathis who had been seeing Hallager's daughter Lucy despite being told to stay away. Not long afterward, John Barrow McBride comes to town. He has a mind-reading act that the townsfolk find entertaining but he also seems to have information about Hallager's shooting. How he got that information tells Lucas how McBride gets the information for his act but also leads him to the real shooter.
- Sadistic and hated theater critic Fitzgerald Fortune buys a player piano that has the power to reveal the souls of all who hear it.
