- A young woman, living with her parents and siblings on a remote farm in harsh, picturesque northern Québec, has three suitors: a steady and unimaginative farmer, Eutrope, the Americanized and wealthy Lorenzo, who has sought his fortune in Boston, and François Paradis, a rough and virile logger who captures her heart despite the warnings of her parents and the village priest. For a year, marked by seasonal change in an atmosphere charged with the strangeness of Indians and the demons of the woods, we see Maria at work and prayer, struggling with decisions, choosing to stay in Canada, in love with François, seeking to change his rough behaviors, and dealing with extraordinary loss.
- Jean is a popular on-air television news reporter. He's been doing a series on the increasing police state in which they live, this condition being sanctioned by the political agenda of the sitting government. Because of these charged stories which he fervently believes, Jean is asked to resign, with the official story told to the public being that he is on a prolonged medical leave. He knows that he will be watched by the police because of the stories regardless of what he does following his resignation. Rather than stop his work, Jean decides to take a legitimate reporting job in the north as a cover, all the while continuing on with his exposés on the police state. Traveling around in an RV to collect these stories, he is accompanied by his girlfriend Lise, a schoolteacher who is on her summer break. Affected both by the isolation in the area in which they travel and the result of the police state on the people they meet in the north, Jean and Lise individually come to the realization of what they want out of their relationship, and out of life in general. What they end up doing, however, may ultimately be outside of their control.
- The producer of "On the Spot", a cameraman, and skilled woodsman Angus Baptiste are left in the bush with nothing but an axe (plus a camera and a microphone).
