Thomas is secretly expecting a beloved child with the "travelling dancer" Serafina, so that he can finally start his own family. Agate is so enraged that she uses black magic disguised as a healing elixir consecrated by the Church. She tries to destroy there true love as she simultaneously reflects on the loss of Thomas and her own greed-obsessed life. When Agathe pronounces the "blessing of liberation" with his cross held up, Serafina's brain disabled brother Valentin tries to prevent this by attacking Agathe with a knife in a panic-stricken frenzy. During the fight, however, Martha, the intended fiancee, accidentally dies. Valentin, who only wanted to defend Serafina and Thomas, unintentionally becomes a tragic murderer. Agate's pain is so deep that she calls on the devil to help her. The curse takes its course. The story is partly based on true stories.
