The IRS is going after a big chunk of change from Ty Dolla $ign, claiming he's $180,969.35 in the hole. The rapper was hit with a federal tax lien for 3 separate years -- $16,617.05 in 2011, $54,626.91 in 2013 and $109,725.39 in 2014. Ty released "Beach House Ep" -- his first major label project -- in 2014, so it makes sense he made a lot more money that year. Problem is, according to docs, he didn't pay enough, or any, taxes on that salary.

Nerdwriter is back with a new video essay, and this one leans heavily on a troubling trend in Hollywood these days: an obsession with what he calls "intertextuality." Essentially, it means that studios love creating moments that are designed to evoke responses from an audience by referencing things you're already familiar with: things like lifting a scene directly from a comic in a comic book movie, or framing a shot identically to its animated predecessor in a live-action remake. It's not exactly a revelatory observation, but I think it's important that everyone is at least aware that they're being manipulated in this specific way so that maybe we'll be able to demand better from filmmakers in the future.
When studios throw a familiar reference at us (say, the appearance of Sauron in The Hobbit trilogy), we shouldn't just eat it up because we recognize the reference. Of course we recognize the reference.

Sienna Miller is unlike many actors I’ve interviewed in how she seems as intent in learning about you, as you are in learning about her. It’s the same quality that makes her so captivating to watch in films like Factory Girl, The Edge of Love and High-Rise, which was at the center of our conversation. In Ben Wheatley’s epic science-fiction thriller she plays Charlotte, a single mother living in the title building, where she meets the enigmatic Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston) with whom she begins an affair. Ms. Miller provides Charlotte with an almost feline instinct, onscreen she slinks with premeditated effortlessness, seducing those on her path because life has revealed that is her strongest asset. She also infuses Charlotte with a droll sense of humor that in the hands of a lesser actor would make her seem heartless.
Like Charlotte, Ms. Miller is also very frank,...

Matt Damon has had a lot of unfortunate onscreen accidents that have stranded him in far-off locales, both real and fictional, launching awe-inspiring rescue missions. But what would such daring escapes cost if they took place in the real world?
A Quora user posed that question on the Q&A site, and a commenter named Kynan Eng took it upon himself to total up the hypothetical budgets of such complicated endeavors. The result, Eng discovered, was truly staggering.
In an examination of eight of Damon's films -- including "The Martian," "Interstellar," "Elysium," and "Saving Private Ryan" -- Eng calculated that the rescue efforts depicted onscreen amounted to a whopping $900 billion or so in real-life money. That includes more reasonable sums like $100,000 for the search team headed by Tom Hanks in WWII flick "Saving Private Ryan," as well as astronomical numbers like $500 billion for the space ship in "Interstellar" and the...

Tim here. Every December, Tim's Toons preps for the upcoming Oscar nominations in January by looking at some of the smaller and more easily overlooked films that have thrown their hat in the ring for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. It's a slim list of 16 titles this year, which means that if even one of them fails to meet the eligibility requirements (they don't all appear to have had their qualifying theatrical run yet), we wouldn’t have a year with five nominees. Something to think about as you all work on your nomination predictions.
Let’s turn now to one of those films that almost certainly won't make the cut no matter how many nominees end up happening, through absolutely no fault of its own. Moomins on the Riviera is a slight, charming, and deeply silly comedy adapting an iconic Finnish comic strip and children’s book series, quite obscure in America,...

There should be a different kind of Oscar for roles that require an actor to put him- or herself in actual potential danger. Had to climb Everest? That's a Danger Oscar nomination right there. Get mauled by an actual bear? That's a nom. Something to think about, Leo. First up for a Dangie (look, I'll workshop a few nicknames) is Creed star Michael B. Jordan. The film's director, Ryan Coogler, narrated one of the film's early fights for the New York Times' "Anatomy of a Scene," describing in delightful detail the intricate choreography that goes into the bout, made more difficult by the fact the scene is shot in one continuous take. Coogler compares Jordan's performance to a monologue. Unlike a monologue, however, if Jordan forgot his lines, he would have had his face absolutely pulverized by a giant man's fist. Can I start the Danger Academy and get the...

How can anyone argue with the rules of our childhood? Finder’s keepers is as sacred an adolescent law of survival as calling shotgun of implementing the infamous triple dog dare. But, what happens when we employ these tactics in adult life? One possible eventuality plays out in real life as the subject matter of a new documentary from Bryan Carberry and J. Clay Tweel.
Finder’S Keepers follows the antics of two men, John Wood and Shannon Whisnant. John Wood lost his leg in a small plane crash that killed his father. Shannon Whisnant is an entrepreneurial picker who purchases the contents of a storage unit at an auction and discovers John Wood’s amputated leg inside a smoker grill within the storage unit he purchased.

"Ancient Chinese Secret" which is hands down a fatal though convincing verdict for Backstrom, introduces a burgeoning romance within the squad, and reveals Gravely exhibiting some of her lieutenant's less attractive characteristics. But what about the... I mean... Where's the... Let me start again. After last episode's powerful reveal about the Lacy Siddon abduction -- the case which unhinged Backstrom's psyche seven years ago -- some serious follow-up was in order, was it not? The continuity of that whole storyline seems to have stalled the hard-won momentum "Bogeyman" spurred. Or, did it? Could it be that the sticky strings binding the overarching drama together were simply of the more subtle variety this time round? Something to think about, without a doubt.
It seems at first glance that "Ancient Chinese Secret" fell victim to a serious case of schizophrenic scheduling. What the what? As logic would suggest, several episodes of a...

A minute can seem a considerable amount of time when you’re waiting at the microwave door like a starved lion stalking its prey. A minute is forever when your legs are about to turn to soup on a treadmill; and as for being at work… well 60 seconds is a damn cruel eternity when it’s the last few minutes of the day.
We underestimate the power of the minute – you’d be surprised at what the world accomplishes by the time your microwave reaches zero. While you’ve been reading this intro, billions of chemical reactions have taken place in your body. Billions. If you’re reading this on the toilet… perhaps a few more. And if you’re reading this having sex it’s definitely about time you rethink your priorities.

It's been a while since I posted such a peculiar, off-world news piece, but having seen Evian's new advert - and with Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 just weeks away from its global release - I thought this was needed.
In recent years the Evian brand, owned by the French Multinational group Danone, has become synonymous with dancing babies. In 2009, the company launched the first of what was to become a series of funky, baby-infused dance commercials..and what better way to start than with The Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight :
Since then, Evian has invested much time and effort into their 'Baby and Me' advertising campaign, with each ad featuring a new and exciting dance-theme whilst harking back to its origins. However, in their latest post Evian has...quite simply...outdone themselves.

Gregory Peck movies: Memorable miscasting in David O. Selznick’s Western Gregory Peck is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" star today, August 15, 2013. TCM is currently showing Raoul Walsh’s good-looking but not too exciting Captain Horatio Hornblower (1951), with Peck in the title role and Virginia Mayo as his leading lady. (See “Gregory Peck in ‘Duel in the Sun’: TCM movie schedule.”) (Photo: Gregory Peck ca. 1950.) Next in line is Zoltan Korda’s crime melodrama The Macomber Affair (1947), based on a story by Ernest Hemingway about a troubled married couple and their safari guide. This is another good-looking film — black-and-white cinematography by veteran Karl Struss, whose credits ranged from the 1920 Gloria Swanson melo Something to Think About to Charles Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. Unfortunately, the psychology, the romance, and some of the acting found in The Macomber Affair is — at best — superficial. Joan Bennett and Gregory Peck look great,...

Also in television culture, as you’ll see in the bonus 11th slot below (spoiler: Landon likens The Office to a Michael Haneke film!). Like Night of the Hunter, Tod Browning’s Freaks or Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers, The Road to Yesterday can be ranked among the UFOs of cinema. It’s place in the heart of Cecil B. DeMille’s work proves to be in itself very distinctive. We know that, during his entire life, DeMille had virtually only one producer—Paramount (the former Famous Players Lasky)—just like Minnelli was MGM’s man and Corman American International’s. Sixty-three of his films (out of seventy) were produced at Paramount. And, oddly enough, it is among the seven outsiders, situated within a brief period from 1925 to 1931, that his best activity is to be found (I’m thinking of Madam Satan, The Godless Girl, and The Road to Yesterday)–his most audacious undertakings. To top it off, for this uncontested king of the box office, his best films were his biggest commercial failures.

The Carrie Diaries is coming! AnnaSophia Robb and the gang will be premiering on January 14, and we are dying to see the new pseudo-prequel to Sex And The City. The Carrie Diaries trailer we’ve seen so far has given us Manhattan, hunky boys and Carrie’s high school buddy Maggie describing her first time thusly: “It was like putting a hot dog in a keyhole.” How flawless is that? Seriously, that could be in an actual line from a original Satc ep.
While it seems like the Carrie Diaries keeps a lot of elements of Satc, certain things have changed. For example, Carrie’s father will be appearing on the show, while die-hard Satc fans will remember that Mr. Bradshaw ducked out on Carrie and her mom when our protagonist was five. An interesting piece from Reuters reporting that Penguin Books has found that while ebook sales are going strong, ebook apps with extra bells and whistles are really not.

For that matter, has anybody done any “motion comics” lately?...

If you think about it, this new poster from Mr. Popper's Penguins is the first time he's been with wild animals since the Ace Ventura days -- let's just hope Popper's Penguins isn't as blatantly awful as that! But what I do hope is that, the days of crappy comedies will return -- because wether we like it or not, we need them! And I see no reason in not confiding in Popper's Penguins for that return. Thanks to MovieHole we have the very first poster for the Jim Carrey starring film, which will hit theaters June 17.
Something to think about is that Popper's Penguins is from the director of Mean Girls and the Freaky Friday remakes, Mark Waters -- who by all accounts did a pretty smashing job, like totally. Check out the poster below!

It was all a love story; for all of this weeks vortexes, world collisions, shattering glass and smashed up corpses at the heart of it was a couple of love stories, of two people who were separated after years of time together and of two people needing reminding of the fact that they have the chance to be something. If only all love stories could be told through the words of the Fringe writers as '6B,' the fourteenth episode of the season was a hum-dinger of a tale showing just how original Fringe can be when it puts its mind to it; an interweaving masterclass, flawlessly flowing from main plat to sub plot and allowing great development of characters at the same time.

Of all the Vra-themed episodes to date, this was the most entertaining and action-packed yet, but "Icarus" still fell just a little bit shy of what it could have been.
In a move that should either stifle the screams of shippers everywhere or just fuel them even more, (who knows?) Clark proposed to Lois, and she without hesitation accepted.
Despite the engagement bash Tess and the heroes threw at Watchtower, their celebration was cut short by the government's escalated enforcement of the Vra.
For my taste, there was too little time spent with the actual heroes themselves.
The first half of the episode trotted along at nearly a snail's pace. Sure, the interrogation scenes were probably necessary to add credence to the real threat against the heroes, and their supporters, but I sure do wish Stargirl had been given something to do besides a single crack of her staff, and...

Dear Mr. Jackman, El Mayimbe here. So I read that Darren Aronofsky has asked you to gain 25 pounds in six months before you start shooting The Wolverine. I also read that Dwayne Johnson has told you to consume 6000 calories a day and gain a pound a week. Well, I have a slight problem with that advice. First of all its unrealistic and the biggest crock of shit I ever heard. Those of us in the underground pharmacology community were laughing our asses off. Go ahead. Consume 6000 calories a day and I promise you will end up playing Fred Dukes (aka The Blob) instead of Logan. With all due respect to Mr. Johnson, I wouldn't be taking training advice from the damn Tooth Fairy whose latest movie nobody saw. Take my advice and I can deliver you 25 rock solid pounds in half the time. 12 weeks to be exact. Lets keep it real sir.

In news that will only shock and scandalize the grandmas of the world, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag admit they faked divorce proceedings in the hope of getting a British reality show. The couple’s decision to fake-destroy man’s most sacred bond corresponded conveniently with an offer from British TV network ITV to cover the split, prompting them to move to Costa Rica, ostensibly so they could shoot scenes without passerbys constantly booing them. Says Spencer, “The divorce was real - just the idea behind it was different than most people’s.” These two can get married and gay couples can’t, everybody. Think about that next time you vote. Unfortunately for…well, no one actually, the TV offer fell apart and Speidi were stuck with their dumb ol’ functional relationship…and not much else. Explained Spencer, “Divorcing was the only way to keep Heidi’s career going because everyone hated me so much.

Rip, Sayid, Lapidus, Sun and Jin.
This week's episode of Lost spilled more blood and ended more lives than any single hour in show history. It was fast-paced and emotional.
Come along with the TV Fanatic staff as we analyze "The Candidate" in the latest edition of the Lost Round Table...
Which deceased character will you miss the most?
M.L. House: Sayid, only because there's so much we still need to learn about what happened with him in the Temple. I assume we'll still discover insight into his "darkness," but until then, Sayid's death makes this storyline feel incomplete.
Lj Gibbs: Lapidus. Jin and Sun will end together in heaven; and Sayid really "died" awhile ago. Lapidus, though, was always good for a laugh.
Mr. Probst: I'll say Jin. I was never one to get swept up in the Jin/Sun romance and Sayid's character and story has been...

So, if you go to Wonder-Con in San Francisco you have a chance to pay $2.00 to get The Man with the Getaway Face, an over-sized prelude of the new Parker book by Darwyn Cooke, The Outfit. Wonder-Con is, of course, April 2-4, 2010 at the Moscone Center. Don’t worry, if you can’t make it to Wonder-Con you can buy The Man with the Getaway Face at comic shops in July. Like I plan on doing.
First of all, how great is that title? The Man with the Getaway Face. Pulps have the best titles, don’t they?
Then we have Darwyn Cooke. Hell of a guy. Created the great miniseries DC: The New Frontier which recasts the DC Universe of the 1950s with a healthy Cold War paranoia and other contemporaneous concerns. Wrote and drew 11 of the first 12 issues of the new Spirit series and managed to keep Ebony...

Doc Jensen learned two very important lessons this week. The first? Limit yourself to just one sentence per column that refers to yourself in the third person, because it’s super-annoying. The second? Perhaps I should spend less time looking outside of Lost for insight and more time looking within the show for insight. Take my recap of “Recon” from Wednesday. It’s filled with references to The Fisher King, The Book of Judges, and Jean-Paul Sartre. If I had more time, I would have larded it up further by arguing that the mythic one-eyed monster Cyclops (Homer edition) and...

Tim Kring may be a very nice man. He's responsible for one of the best set of episodes in TV history (Heroes, season one) and we don't wish unemployment on anyone.
But the Heroes creator gave an interview last week in which he sounded like someone from the mail room that had never penned a single second of a television show.
The good news? Many of his quotes go a long way toward explaining the problems Heroes has faced over the last couple seasons. The bad news? We didn't know how far Kring had fallen sooner. Otherwise,, we could have legitimately tried to get him replaced.
Read the full interview here and check out a few telling excerpts below, many of which are followed by TV Fanatic (Tvf) notes/responses...
On who ratings plummeted: "We took a seven-week break [during season one], and the audience never came back after that."

Yes, I am painfully aware that “Repo! The Genetic Opera” has been around in various forms for quite some time, and I’m also aware that its fanbase is somewhat rabid in its devotion to the project. However, I’m not one or them. In fact, “Repo!” was one of the worst genre-related endeavors I experienced in 2009, right next to the remake of “It’s Alive” and Scary Madison’s boring teen slasher “The Shortcut.” In other words, I really couldn’t care less that Miguel Sapochnik’s upcoming organ repossession yarn “Repo Men” shares several similarities with Darren Lynn Bousman’s insufferable gothic codpiece. Besides, don’t they both have Manjula Padmanabhan’s “Harvest” to thank for these borrowed ideas in the first place? Something to think about when you’re unbridled rage is causing your Hot Topic mascara to run down your pudgy cheeks. For the uninitiated, a...

The website tformers.com has posted the latest in a lineage of "leaked" scripts that may be real, or nothing more than a clever disinformation campaign designed to confuse Internet journalists and fans alike.
This script, which you can read in pdf form by clicking here, was apparently written by Ehren Krueger on November 24. Now ordinarily we'd warn you about spoilers below, but since we're not fully convinced that this is anything more than a clever fabrication to throw folks of the scent of the real story (though admittedly it is a bit early to be employing such tactics...hmmm...), we're going to go ahead and say: *Spoiler Alert*
In the script, the Autobots and Decepticons accidentally thrown back in time after a space battle. They find themselves on Earth in the year 1982, whereupon Starscream kills off Megatron in order to set in motion a master-plan he has, which we...

The Toy Story 3 full-length trailer was finally made available online on Monday at noon, saying farewell to a childhood gone by. The trailer explains the premise of this sequel quickly: Andy grew up playing with Woody and Buzz and all of his toys, but that time is coming to an end. He's about to leave for college, and must decide what to do with his childhood toys.
After opening so bittersweet, the trailer shifts gears to the adventurous tone we're used to from the Toy Story series. This time it's hijinks at a daycare center full of unruly children, which seems to be more than the kids can handle.

The great thing about this premise is that it follows the second movie perfectly. The major conflict of Toy Story 2 was the fear of Andy growing up...
