- Buck Sims, champion all-round cowboy of the North, drops into Toptown to participate in the annual rodeo and meets Mary Blenning, who with her crippled father runs a merry-go-round in a small park in the center of the town. Buck is talking to Mary when Pete, the champion cowboy of the locality and also the town bully, informs him that he is not wanted in the vicinity. Undaunted, Buck goes into the city to register for the rodeo and Pete follows. They get into an argument and in the fight that follows, Pete is badly beaten. He sneaks away vowing vengeance. The next day Buck inveigles a bunch of cowboys to get on the merry-go-round and then speeds up the engine so they all get dizzy and fall off. He then gets on himself and defies them to make him let go. As he rides on the painted ponies, he playfully pulls out his gun and fires in the air. Pete, standing on the sidelines, pulls out his gun and shoots Mary's father. He then calls the sheriff and has Buck arrested for the shooting. Mary refuses to prosecute Buck for the shooting and the sheriff lets him go. The day of the rodeo arrives and after spirited competition, Buck wins the honors away from Pete. That night Buck and Mary go for a walk and Buck tells the girl that he is positive that Pete shot her father. They are observed by Jim, and employee of Blenning, who is under the power of Pete. Jim reports to Pete and when Buck leaves the girl at her home he enters and announces that he is going to take her away with him. Jim attempts to rescue the girl and is killed by Pete. Pete succeeds in putting the girl in a canoe and starts down the river with her. Buck arrives at the girl's home early the next morning and finds Jim's body. He jumps on his horse and rides along the river bank. He sees Pete and the girl in the canoe and jumps his horse from a high cliff into the river. He grapples with Pete and takes him prisoner as the girl swims to the shore. The sheriff arrives on the scene and takes Pete into custody, while Buck and Mary embrace.
