It was one of the first motion pictures to have sound and a couple of talking scenes. It was released in both silent and monaural versions. Some scenes in existing original prints of the film are colored with stencils.
Assuming its copyright has not lapsed already, this film and all others produced in 1928 enter the U.S. public domain in 2024.

In a Trade Paper item in April 1929 Universal announced plans for a sequel to their popular 1928 feature "Lonesome" with the same director (Paul Fejos). No actors were mentioned at that time. The project eventually never happened.
