It’s undeniable that Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and Madonna is the Queen of Pop — but only one of them had the higher net worth. While the two stars ruled the 1980s, they had very different careers. Shockingly, one of them was worth over a billion dollars more than the other.
Madonna’s net worth is huge
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Madonna was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan. She debuted with the now-forgotten single “Everybody,” but her self-titled debut album produced three subsequent hits: “Holiday,” “Borderline,” and “Lucky Star.” She became a megastar with her second album, Like a Virgin. Between the album’s title track and the song “Material Girl,” Madonna established herself as a provocative performer who was not afraid to flaunt her sexuality.

The two directors have joined the cast of Fernando Trueba’s film, which is now shooting in Budapest.
Directors Arturo Ripstein (La Calle De La Amargura) and Juan Antonio Bayona [pictured] (The Impossible) will step in front of the camera for Fernando Trueba’s The Queen Of Spain, his Penelope Cruz-starring sequel to The Girl Of Your Dreams.
It’s an acting first for Bayona, having accepted a brief cameo in the shoot that is now taking place in Budapest. Veteran Mexican director Ripstein will play the more sizable role of a fictional film producer, Sam Spiegelman, who wants to shoot a film in 1950s Spain.
Given that The Queen Of Spain is a comedy, but also a love letter to film history, it’s only fitting that two auteurs as diverse as Bayona and Ripstein have joined Trueba’s cast.
The action is set in 1956, 18 years later in the life of Macarena Granada, the Spanish...

The reviews of Madonna's "Rebel Heart" tour indicate that the pop goddess, who is basically like Marlene Dietrich as an "X-Men" character, is having a blast revisiting her old hits, chatting with the audience about the respect of her ex-husbands, and blowing everyone's mind with intricate, exhausting choreography. Madonna's renewed interest in old catalog hits like "La Isla Bonita" and "Material Girl" is fun, but it also calls to mind a startling bit of news: "The Immaculate Collection," Madonna's first greatest hits and an indispensable collection of pop perfection, is about to turn 25 years old. "The Immaculate Collection," more than Michael Jackson's "HIStory" or "Abba Gold," is the diamond-certified standard for hits compilations. Its 17 songs cover a range of styles and subjects -- think about the world of difference between "Lucky Star" and "Justify My Love" -- while making one unified statement of unabashed exuberance and impish allure. So...

Hulu's seven-episode series "The Hotwives of Orlando" lampoons Bravo's "Real Housewives" franchises in exactly the right ways: The catchphrases, the melodrama, the sham marriages, and the frightening fights are all parodied with very close attention to detail. Creators Dannah Phirman and Danielle Schneider have a cast of game ladies in their Florida-set series, including Schneider herself (who plays Shauna Maducci, the "bankrupt overspender"), "Happy Endings"/"SNL" vet Casey Wilson as trophy wife Tawny St. John, Tymberlee Hill as Phenomenon "Phe Phe" Reed, Andrea Savage as cougar Veronica Von Vandervon, Angela Kinsey of "The Office" as religious zealot Crystal Simmons, and "30 Rock" vet Kristen Schaal as drug-addled former child star Amanda Simmons. HitFix caught a few minutes to interview Wilson, Hill, Savage, Schneider, and Phirman. Instead of asking them to name their favorite "Housewives" franchise or terrifying dream about Andy Cohen, we asked them to pick their favorite ladies from famous pop culture groups.

Glee wrapped up last week with Rachel (Lea Michele) pursing a career away from Broadway as a TV star, Mercedes (Amber Riley) getting Santana (Naya Rivera) a spot on her upcoming album and Shirley MacLaine giving Blaine (Darren Criss) a career boost and some advice. Kurt (Cris Colfer), meanwhile, has been playing it a bit safer, continuing his education at Nyada while working at the musical diner.
Glee Recap
While Rachel is reading unflattering blind items about herself and Santana, taking on the role of publicist, goes in search of a good cause for Rachel, Kurt is hard at work at the diner when Maggie Banks (June Squibb) enters. When Kurt gets Maggie’s ear, he unloads about how his friends have achieved all of this success while he’s still just a student in the background. She understands. Scotland's only silent film festival was born of the determination of a Bo'ness local to bring the big screen to his doorstep
Festival name: Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema
Location: Bo'ness, Falkirk
Website: www.hippfest.co.uk
Dates: Annually, mid-March
About: With the best will in the world, Bo'ness seems an unlikely venue for a film festival, even something as quaint-sounding as a silent movie festival. But Bo'ness, a town with a population of about 14,500, perched on the banks of the Firth of Forth between Edinburgh and Falkiri, is the home of Scotland's only silent film festival. And it's all in honour of a local hero.
Louis Dickson, an electrical engineer turned cameraman, was a big noise in the early Scottish film business, grandly named the official "Kinematographer" of the Scottish National Exhibition in 1908. While he went on to take other official positions within the national film industry, Dickson's heart...

It's hard to believe it's been 30 years since she first shook, shimmied and grooved her way into our hearts with smash songs like "Lucky Star" and "Borderline." Today, Madonna hits another personal milestone: her 55th birthday.
After 2012's Super Bowl and "Mdna" album and tour onslaught, the Queen of Pop has been uncharacteristically quiet as of late. Still, she turned heads in a Cub Scout uniform while presenting Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo Award at the GLAAD Awards in March, made a jaw-dropping entrance in punked-out Givenchy at the Met Gala in May and paid homage to Marlene Dietrich at the June premiere of her Mdna concert film.
It's safe to say the Material Girl won't be slowing down anytime soon. She's been dropping hints about a much-anticipated "Secret Project" on Instagram and other social media outlets, and is also rumored to be in talks with Giorgio Moroder, the...

It was 30 years ago today -- on July 27, 1983 -- that Madonna's self-titled debut album was unleashed, ushering in a wave of frenzy that would hold steady for three decades and counting.
"Madonna" saw five singles hit the airwaves, each making a splash on Billboard's dance chart. The singer, then 25, earned her first No. 1 dance tracks with "Holiday" and "Lucky Star," while "Borderline" became a gold-certified single that provided a perfect segue to Madonna's forthcoming album "Like a Virgin."
All in all, the debut was relatively tame for what would pour out of the singer in years to come. "Madonna" offers a dose of pure pop fun, a mixed bag of bubblegum anthems before the wave of sexuality and, later, spirituality overtook the icon's career. The album received mostly positive reviews, with Entertainment Weekly praising its "ability to fuse club beats with peerless pop" and Rolling Stone applauding the "irresistible invitation to the dance.

Part of me feels bad for human actors who are cast in the latest Godzilla movies. Unless your name happens to be Raymond Burr, chances are you won.t be able to emerge from the long shadow cast by the massive reptilian lead character, because you know audience members are grabbing a ticket to see Godzilla, and not them. Happy-Go-Lucky star Sally Hawkins will be the next actress to try and steal screen time away from the radioactive creature in Legendary and Warner Bros.. new Godzilla reboot, Deadline reports. Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters), the new Godzilla began filming a few weeks back, and already stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, the brilliant Bryan Cranston and Juliette Binoche. That.s an amazing cast for what some might dismiss as a simple monster movie. Hawkins, meanwhile, joins the ensemble as a scientist, though details beyond that are scarce.

Adele took home every accolade under the sun for her blockbuster sophomore album 21, but she just earned another: The young songstress' album was just certified Diamond, meaning it has sold 10x million copies. The last album to sell 10 million in under two years was 'N Sync's No Strings Attached, which came out in 2000. Wow. You're old.
This got me thinking: There aren't too many female solo acts who've sold 10x million copies of a single album. How do they stack up in quality? I've ranked my picks for the best ten below, and hopefully it'll inspire you to scream and complain. (Note: I haven't included bands with female singers, obviously. Rumours and Tragic Kingdom would surely shake up this list.)
10. Mariah Carey, Daydream (1995)
Mariah's best and biggest singles pepper Daydream: The Tom Tom Club-riffing "Fantasy" is a transcendant roller-coaster ride; the melodramatic "One Sweet Day" remains the biggest charting...

Carrie Bradshaw is back on the air in the CW's Sex and the City origin story The Carrie Diaries, where a 16-year-old version of Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) takes an internship at a fancy Manhattan law firm and falls in love with the city. Aww. Is this idea bearable?
Since the movie Sex and the City 2 bastardized the HBO series, which really didn't make any major missteps during its six-season run (aside from that totally cheesy finale), it seems like there's been a collective cultural dismissal of the original show's worth. I say we give the new series a try for three reasons:
1) The book series The Carrie Diaries is actually well-reviewed, and it's also written by S&Tc guru Candace Bushnell. The flavor of the new show may actually hew closer to the fun feel of the old show than we realize.
2) The show takes place in 1984, and if I'm not mistaken,...

Madonna released her first single 30 years ago. That means she's officially been a part of the danceteria that is our collective subconscious for three decades. Damn. The only proper way to celebrate is with a photographic timeline, a one-a-year retrospective of Madonna's defining images, videos, and pop culture moments per year. Let's jump from 1982 to 2012 in 30 fabulous photos.
1982: The spiky journey begins.
1983: A lucky star is born.
1984: The "boy toy" bombards the '84 VMAs
1985: Never been healthier.
1986: Herb Ritts captures Madonna at her truest and bluest
1987: "La Isla Ciccone"
1988: From "boy toy" to "gal pal" with Sandra Bernhard
1989: This time, "M" stands for "Metropolis" in the unbeatable "Express Yourself" video.
1990: Striking a pose in "Vogue"
1991: We knew she'd wow at the Oscars "sooner or later."
1992: Enter Dita.
1993: Lost in a "Fever" dream

Continuing this month's Tuesday night survey of how movies have depicted persons with disabilities over the years, Turner Classic Movies offers an Oct. 9 prime-time lineup of films focusing on wounded veterans returning from the wars.
The night's titles lead off with "Lucky Star," a 1929 drama that has the dubious distinction of being one of the first films in which a disabled character -- in this case a World War I hero (Charles Farrell) -- is inexplicably and sentimentally healed of his condition at the climax, and conclude with the Oscar-winning 1946 wartime classic "The Best Years of Our Lives," for which real-life amputee Harold Russell received an Academy Award as best supporting actor.
Hosted by TCM's Ben Mankiewicz and Lawrence Carter-Long, a frequent spokesman on topics relating to media representation of the disabled, the weekly festival, dubbed "The Projected Image: A History of Disability in Film," features more than 20 films drawn...

Shortly after winning a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his nostalgic rom-com Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen wrapped on his follow-up, To Rome With Love. The ensemble comedy, which unfolds interweaving tales of amore, is set to make its Stateside debut on June 22. Already this almost comically prolific filmmaker is casting his next jet-setting production, and he has his sights set on bubbly Brit Sally Hawkins. Variety reveals Allen has approached the Happy-Go-Lucky star to take on one of the untitled feature's two female leads. Word has it Cate Blanchett is being considered for the other. Should she sign on, Hawkins will be playing a spirited but neurotic woman described as "rough around the edges," while Blanchett is being eyed for a more sophisticated lady, whose life is more enviable at the outset. Also said to be circling is Bradley Cooper, who seems poised to join the sure-to-be star-studded ensemble.

I’ll be honest, I can’t really picture millions of macho American football fans putting aside their Miller Lites and nacho supreme platters to pay hushed attention to Madonna belting out “Like a Virgin” on Sunday. I could be wrong, but recent halftime show performances by air guitar-friendly classic rock bands like the Who, U2, and Aerosmith seem a little safer. Even a red-state songstress like Faith Hill seems like a smarter choice since she’s already wooed dudes with her rendition of the Monday Night Football theme. I suppose Madge will bring a whole new audience to an NFL broadcast,...

The premiere of Madonna's video for "Give Me All Your Luvin,'" the first single off her new album M.D.N.A., is today, children. It's bound to be a little over-the-top and nutty, like the deranged song itself, and I assume it's not going to live up to the greatest stuff in Madonna's catalog. Then I remember: What does live up to the best stuff in Madonna's catalog? Turns out, not much. Madonna's repertoire is a varied and thundering collection of self-empowering pop ditties, soulful ballads, and kooky little anomalies. And they're mostly all irreplaceable. In the tradition of Rolling Stone, who listed their 100 Greatest Beatles Songs a couple years ago, let's reinspect Madonna's complete history and name her definitive 100 jams. Ready? Start disagreeing Now.

America will be the first audience for the Queen of Pop in over two years when Madonna takes the stage at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis as the halftime act for Super Bowl Xlvi. If her history with MTV is any indicator, she's likely to blow the roof off the joint.
Madonna is known for her over-the-top live performances and will most assuredly have her game face on with the world watching this Sunday. Not that she ever slacks in the live performance department: Her most recent tour, Sticky & Sweet, was the highest-grossing tour ever by a solo artist and the fourth-biggest tour of all time. From Live Aid in 1985 to Live 8, 20 years later, she's headlined some...

The NFL has leaked -- or at least teasingly referred to -- the setlist for Madonna during halftime of Super Bowl Xlvi on Sunday (Feb. 5).
Per CBS Sports, the current issue of NFL Magazine (the league's official publication) has this to say about the pop icon's performance Sunday: "Though Madonna's set list was not officially announced at press time, fans might expect her to give all her luvvin', provide a ray of light and be in vogue with her music," the magazine quips.
Presumably you spotted the (not at all) subtle references to the song titles in that sentence, but for the record, the NFL is saying Madonna will sing "Gimme All Your Luvin'" from her forthcoming album "M.D.N.A." and past hits "Ray of Light" and "Vogue."
(Nicki Minaj, who appears on "Gimme All Your Luvin,'" has said she'll be part of the show as well.

Rihanna has broken a Us chart record with her latest single. The singer's new track 'We Found Love' has climbed to number nine on this week's Us Hot 100 chart, making it her 20th Top 10 hit. Rihanna has now become the fastest solo artist in music history to achieve 20 Top 10 singles on the Billboard chart. The 23-year-old's first Top 10 hit was 'Pon De Replay' in June 2005, which peaked at number two on the Hot 100 chart, reports Billboard. With 'We Found Love' entering the Top 10 this week, Rihanna has achieved the feat in just six years and four months, breaking a record previously held by Madonna. Madonna first entered the Us Top 10 with 'Lucky Star' in 1984, with her 20th hit being 'Hanky Panky' in July 1990. The total time it took the pop icon to achieve the chart milestone is (more)...

The premise of Ben-To is a simple one: being a student is hard, money is tight, and if you want cheap food, you’re going to have to fight for it. The tone seems far less Battle Royale and more Lucky Star, but that’s because a situation where poor students turn to fisticuffs in order to get at discounted food demands to be a broad comedy. Thanks to Twitch, we can share the teaser for the forthcoming Anime series, so check it out for yourself: No sign of the plot or story anywhere (like any good teaser), but the action looks impressive in the way that the best anime usually does. Swinging camera angles and that signature mix of freeze-framing works well here with some vibrant characters. Really, the main reason to keep an eye out is the ridiculous premise. Thanks, Japan. What say you?...

On this day 53 years ago in Bay City, Michigan, pop royalty was born in the form of Madonna Louise Ciccone, the third child of Silvio Ciccone and her namesake mother, Madonna Louise Fortin Ciccone.
Madonna’s rise to stardom is legendary. She briefly attended the University of Michigan on a dance scholarship before dropping out to move to New York City in late 1977. She famously arrived in NYC with just $35 in her pocket and worked briefly at a Dunkin’ Donuts before taking on odd jobs as a backup dancer and model (which came back to bite her in the butt after she got famous and some nude pics taken in ’78 were published in Penthouse and Playboy in ’85).
She was playing in a NYC-based band with an ex-boyfriend when a demo landed in the hands of then-Sire Records founder Seymour Stein, who famously signed Madonna to the label from his hospital...

The wranglers of Movieline's Bad Movies We Love (me and me alone) always dredge up dismissible teen comedies from the early 2000s, in case you haven't noticed. What's with them (me)? Wait, I know: Those movies are bad and we (I) love them. Yes! Right! On that note, say hello to Orange County, the breakout vehicle for Movieline pal and Lucky star Colin Hanks, who holds together this funny but aimless romp with the help of Jack Black, a thrilling supporting cast, and a botched Beatles haircut.

If today feels a bit more celebratory, that's probably because it's time for Stefani Germanotta — the woman known to the universe as Lady Gaga — to commemorate her birth. The international pop sensation is 25 years old today, and she has managed to accomplish quite a bit in her quarter century (including three chart-topping singles).
But what has she accomplished in comparison to Madonna, her clearest antecedent, when she was 25? The Material Girl turned 25 in 1983, just after releasing her debut self-titled album. She was already starting to build up her following, and the singles "Holiday," "Lucky Star" and "Borderline" were about to help her bust out of the clubs and onto mainstream radio. When she was 25, she also recorded and released her second album Like a Virgin, released the hit single of the same name (which became her first chart-topping single) and performed said song on the very first MTV Video Music Awards.

First off, a huge amount of thanks to Jordan Cramer for filling in for me a couple weeks ago. You can check out his review of "Two Monkeys and a Panda" here.
After a few weeks off, Modern Family returned with quite a funny episode filled with bits and storylines right up my alley. There was a large Luke plot (and anyone who has read these reviews knows full well my love for Luke stories), Nathan Lane returning as Pepper (the first Broadway show I ever saw was the revival of Guys and Dolls starring Nathan Lane), and even a bit of Dylan thrown in too. The inclusion of these elements was certainly enough for me to love the episode, but "Boys' Night" also did something completely unique for the series: it had a genuine serious moment. Not just a sentimental or reflective moment, but a "wow, that just stopped...

"Time just gets away from us." Thus, the penultimate line in a great American novel that has recently been transposed to cinema yet again. I cite it as my meager excuse for not being able to offer a more thorough consideration of the items I've chosen to treat in this particular report. Said items being two out of the three recent Blu-ray discs released on the French label Carlotta, presenting three (actually, more than three, but we'll get to that) silent-era masterpieces from the American director Frank Borzage, all of which have been previously made available in the States via Fox Home Entertainment's wondrous 2009 box set Murnau, Borzage And Fox. These being 1927's Seventh Heaven, 1928's Street Angel, and 1929's Lucky Star, Borzage's penultimate silent picture. My excuse for not having been able to check out the Blu-ray of Seventh Heaven I can put down to a cause unrelated to myself,...
