Blair Underwood has long been heating up the screen with roles on L.A. Law (which featured TV’s original “hunks,” as he puts it) and Sex and the City, when he romanced Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). Now, the actor is lending his voice to Audible Romance, a new subscription service offering unlimited access to steamy stories and performances, including Underwood’s narration of Midnight Untamed by author Lara Adrian. He’s joined by the likes of Jesse Metcalfe and Dermot Mulroney, who perform novels by Nora Roberts, Sylvia Day and more.
“You're actually articulating something that can be very racy, of course, and risqué. But it's actually kind of fun,” Underwood says of narrating Midnight Untamed, the sizzling standalone story of love lost and found. In order to get in the right mood while performing, he prefers to have the recording booth lights dimmed, “so you can use your imagination.”

'The Merry Widow' with Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald and Minna Gombell under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch. Ernst Lubitsch movies: 'The Merry Widow,' 'Ninotchka' (See previous post: “Ernst Lubitsch Best Films: Passé Subtle 'Touch' in Age of Sledgehammer Filmmaking.”) Initially a project for Ramon Novarro – who for quite some time aspired to become an opera singer and who had a pleasant singing voice – The Merry Widow ultimately starred Maurice Chevalier, the hammiest film performer this side of Bob Hope, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler – the list goes on and on. Generally speaking, “hammy” isn't my idea of effective film acting. For that reason, I usually find Chevalier a major handicap to his movies, especially during the early talkie era; he upsets their dramatic (or comedic) balance much like Jack Nicholson in Martin Scorsese's The Departed or Jerry Lewis in anything (excepting Scorsese's The King of Comedy...

The Martian, which remained in the top three at the box office over the weekend in its sixth week at theaters, is a bonafide hit for legendary director Ridley Scott and will almost certainly earn multiple nominations from the Academy.
Scott is no stranger to nominations, having earned three best directing nods in his career, but the award itself still eludes the English director. 2000’s Gladiator may have earned a best actor Oscar for Russell Crowe and best picture, but Scott lost best director to Steven Soderbergh for Traffic. The very next year saw the same outcome for Scott as his directing nomination for Black Hawk Down lost out to Crowe-starring A Beautiful Mind‘s director, Ron Howard.
This year is shaping up to be different for Scott, however, as The Martian continues to rack up at the box office and resound with critics. A...

Greta Garbo movie 'The Kiss.' Greta Garbo movies on TCM Greta Garbo, a rarity among silent era movie stars, is Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” performer today, Aug. 26, '15. Now, why would Garbo be considered a silent era rarity? Well, certainly not because she easily made the transition to sound, remaining a major star for another decade. Think Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, William Powell, Fay Wray, Marie Dressler, Wallace Beery, John Barrymore, Warner Baxter, Janet Gaynor, Constance Bennett, etc. And so much for all the stories about actors with foreign accents being unable to maintain their Hollywood stardom following the advent of sound motion pictures. A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer star, Garbo was no major exception to the supposed rule. Mexican Ramon Novarro, another MGM star, also made an easy transition to sound, and so did fellow Mexicans Lupe Velez and Dolores del Rio, in addition to the very British...

Ninotchka
Written by Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, Walter Reisch
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
USA, 1939
It’s easy to see why Ninotchka works as well as it does, and why it’s one of the best films from Hollywood’s golden age and of arguably Hollywood’s greatest year. Just look at the talent involved. Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, and Walter Reisch were all seasoned writers, though with their best work admittedly still to come. Ernst Lubitsch had directed a number of excellent silent films in Germany, had hit the ground running once in Hollywood, making his first American film with no less a star than Mary Pickford (Rosita [1923]), and after a series of charming musical comedies, many with Maurice Chevalier, directed the more sublime and sophisticated comedies for which he now best known, films like Trouble in Paradise (1932) and Design for Living (1933). While this was happening, Greta Garbo was working...

Ivor Novello last film: 'Autumn Crocus' (photo: Ivor Novello and Fay Compton in 'Autumn Crocus') Can a plain looking, naive spinster school teacher ever find real love in faraway places? This was a question asked by Shirley Booth in Arthur Laurents' 1952 stage play The Time of the Cuckoo; Katharine Hepburn in the 1955 David Lean-directed film version, Summertime (1955); and Elizabeth Allen in the 1965 Richard Rodgers-Steven Sondheim musical adaptation, Do I Hear a Waltz? Can such a woman's yearning for romance ever be satisfied? "Yes" and "No," according to Basil Dean's fine 1934 British film Autumn Crocus, which marked the last film appearance of British stage and screen superstar Ivor Novello (Alfred Hitchcok's The Lodger). Autumn Crocus starts out during the holiday season, when two British schoolteachers decide to spend their vacation together on the Continent. Soft-hearted Jenny Grey (Fay Compton) longs to see the Austrian Alps,...

Greta Garbo is a delight in this biopic of the exotic dancer executed for espionage, and the supporting moustaches a special treat
Mata Hari (1931)
Director: George Fitzmaurice
Entertainment grade: B+
History grade: B+
Mata Hari (real name Margaretha Zelle) was an exotic dancer in Paris during the first world war. She was accused of espionage and was executed by firing squad in October 1917.
International relations
It is 1917. Russian aviator Alexis Rosanoff (Ramon Novarro) has an amusing moustache and a strong Mexican accent. This must be very early in 1917: Russia was in turmoil that year, with a revolution in February and the tsar's abdication in March. Fortunately, no sign of that here. Rosanoff is taken by imperial Russian general Serge Shubin (Lionel Barrymore) to see the celebrated Mata Hari dance. In real life, he'd have been disappointed: her final performance was in March 1915.

That Night In Rio
Directed by Irving Cummings
Written by George Seaton, Bess Meredyth, and Hal Long
Starring Don Ameche, Alice Faye, and Carmen Miranda
USA, 91 min.
Romance and harmless conflict run amuck in Irving Cummings’s That Night In Rio. The film follows American entertainer, Larry Martin (Don Ameche), as he impersonates his doppelganger, Baron Manuel Duarte. Once Manuel’s wife, Baroness Cecilia Duarte (Alice Faye) discovers the impersonation, she begins to want her husband to be as loving as the one portrayed by Larry. That Night In Rio also features several song and dance numbers from Carmen Miranda, at the time deemed “The Brazilian Bombshell.”
That Night In Rio is part of Twentieth Century Fox’s musicals set in Latin countries (like another Miranda film, Down Argentine Way). Like other Latin lover musicals of the era, That Night In Rio has a stereotypical depiction of Latin culture. This...

Reno, Nev. -- Jack Hanlon, who had roles in the 1926 silent classic "The General" and in two 1927 "Our Gang" comedies, died Thursday in Las Vegas, family members said Sunday. He was 96.
The precocious, freckle-faced Hanlon was a natural as a child actor from 1926 to 1933, said his niece, Wendy Putnam Park of Las Vegas.
"He was absolutely the sweetest, most charming man," Park told The Associated Press. "He loved talking about being in the movies if you brought the subject up. He loved sharing stories about being in them."
After a small role with Buster Keaton in "The General," he played mischievous kids in two of Hal Roach's "Our Gang/Little Rascals" films: "The Glorious Fourth" and "Olympic Games."
Hanlon also played an orphan in the 1929 drama "The Shakedown," and got an on-screen kiss from Greta Garbo in the 1930 film "Romance."

Another Oscar Trivia Explosion. This time it's the Actresses.
Jennifer Lawrence made quite a film-carrying impression in Winter's Bone this past summer. It was one of the leggiest arthouse hits in some time, playing for months, and wracking up $6+ million without a huge advertising budget or bankable stars and with grim subject matter. Well done. At Christmas Hailee Steinfeld will lead us on a revenge journey in True Grit. While we suspect she's the lead actress as well, people her age are almost always demoted to "Supporting" if they're sharing the screen with a big star as co-lead and she is. Hi, Jeff Bridges! But we're pretending she's an Oscar lead today so as to have double the excuse to make this list. Humour us, won'cha?

The MTV Video Music Awards featured a few surprises, some much anticipated comebacks and a note or two of redemption Sunday night, as the biggest names in music joined to celebrate a year of video awsome-ness. There seemed to be more performances than awards, but that shouldn't come as a shock. The two hour live telecast would run out of time if not for the performers. After-all, there's only so many awards you can hand out for a video. With that said there were some genuinely triumphant moments Sunday night, not the least of which was Eminem's opener. The Detroit rapper came a long way from 8 mile to seize the moment with a gutsy in-your-face performance of "Not Afraid", backed by a sizzling duet with Rihanna in the dramatically poignant "Love the Way You Lie." The crowded house was bamboozled by the red back drop of flames and the vision...

Michael Mann is once again heading into the halls of history, but this time around it's about those who document the violence rather than those who deliver it. Variety reports that Mann and Columbia Pictures are joining forces to tell the story of war photographer Robert Capa and his romance with fellow photographer Gerda Taro.
The good news: This isn't simply another story where an artist's achievements are reduced to their time between the sheets. To be adapted from Susan Fortes' Waiting for Robert Capa (by scribe Jez Butterworth), the film will kick off when Capa (a refugee from fascist Hungary whose professional name was inspired by Frank Capra) meets a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany -- Gerda Taro (a name partly inspired by Greta Garbo). She becomes his assistant, learns photography, and the two fall in love. A year later, the Spanish Civil War begins, setting Capa up as...

Sweeping this year's MTV Movie Awards apparently is not enough for "Twilight" as it dominates yet another awards show, the 11th Annual Teen Choice Awards. On August 9, a day before Teen Choice is aired on small screen, the vampire drama has been unveiled to be the recipient of nine surfboard trophies, eight of them came from the movie section alone.
This Catherine Hardwicke-directed movie nabbed Choice Movie Drama, besting over "Angels & Demons", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Obsessed" and "Slumdog Millionaire". Its cast members, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Cam Gigandet, Ashley Greene and Taylor Lautner, all took home one kudo each in the performers category.
In addition to their Choice Movie Actress and Actor in Drama, Stewart and Pattinson landed Choice Movie Liplock as well. Pattinson also grabbed Choice Movie Rumble which he shared with Gigandet. Beside the movie trophies, "Twilight" also collected Choice Music Soundtrack title, beating...

Like plenty of you out there, I sat down to watch Brüno over the weekend and was treated to one of the more graphic sex scenes I've had the pleasure of witnessing in a long time. But unlike most sex scenes, this one wasn't about turning on the crowd, it was about getting laughs. Now in Brüno's case, the comedic effect was a deliberate one, but it did get me thinking about sex scenes in films that have had the opposite of their intended effect. So that's why today I've put together a list of sex scenes in movies that aren't the least bit sexy.
Showgirls
Let's start off with the big dog, shall we? When it comes to ridiculous on-screen sex, it doesn't get much dumber than Showgirls. If you don't believe me, do a quick search for a list of the worst sex scenes and this Eszterhas/Verhoeven...

It's funny, but I've been watching Kevin Smith movies for a long time now, but it was only as I was reading through Total Film's list of the Best & Worst: Kevin Smith, that I realized something that I never really thought all that much about before -- and what was my big epiphany? Well, I finally discovered that Smith's films in the end are just rom-coms with poop jokes. Smith may have been considered a foul-mouthed stoner for most of his career, but now that I've looked beyond his shtick, I've finally come to the conclusion that the guy is a big old softy. Which got me thinking: Is there such a thing as romance for boys?
Now if you're the observant type, you've probably noticed I'm not a dude, so what do I know, right? But I've been told time and again that I'm not the 'average girl' (whatever...

Having shown its domination at 2009 MTV Movie Awards, "Twilight" is on its way to sweep away another awards, the 11th Annual Teen Choice Awards. Following the announcement of the awards' nominees for 2009, it is uncovered that the vampire drama movie led the fields by grabbing the most nods, twelve in all.
Among its nominations, the Catherine Hardwicke-directed movie scored Choice Movie: Drama as well as Choice Movie: Romance. The disappointment of X-Men Origins: Wolverine may actually have been worth it if its $85 million debut gives Hugh Jackman the industry cred he's always seemed to lack. It's difficult to believe such a perfect guy isn't considered A-List, but even as recently as Australia, Fox was still trying to sell him as an A Manly Actor You Could Cast In Stuff. Well, Australia didn't convince anyone (though I think he was the one of the standouts of the film), but apparently Wolverine did.
According to Variety Jackman is just lining up projects right and left, all under his Seed Productions banner that he shares with his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness and producer John Palermo. Yesterday's Ghostopolis was just the tip of the iceberg. Now he's actively planning Wolverine's Japan sequel for Fox. The studio has also bought Matt Lieberman's spec script Personal Security for him. Jackman will play a...

Work In Progress The 50 States Project
Earlier this year, a phalanx of American photographers set out to document 12 months in the life of our nation. There are 50 of them in all — one for each state — and what they’ve come up with so far may surprise you.
The project’s instigator — a British photographer named Stuart Pilkington — gives the shutterbugs one assignment every two months. As of this writing, they’ve completed the first: “People.” Vermont’s Seth Butler picked a pair of hirsute farmers to represent his state. Ohio’s Andrew Borowiec shot a snow-covered cemetery. American Idol winner Ruben Studdard and Hootie and the Blowfish front man Darius Rucker are the stand-ins for their home states (Alabama and South Carolina). Check them out today, and check back in May, when the replies to Pilkington’s second assignment — “Habitat” — go up online.

I'd like to think that our own Eric D. Snider knows what's funny, if only twice a day, so when he recommended Larry Doyle's "I Love You, Beth Cooper" last summer, I swiftly added it to my List of Stuff to Read Eventually and have succeeded in putting it off ever since. (I did, however, get around to "Apathy and Other Small Victories," and was consequently amused. Maybe I'm only off on these things by a year or so.)
Anyway, it's been long enough that we're getting a movie of the same name, and Fox has posted the first trailer on its official website -- scary timing, given Eugene's From Page to Screen column last week, on which Doyle himself wrote: "The first trailer should be popping up on the net any day now." (Oh. Guess I should've read that part first.)

Poor Scotland -- it seems only if you have Mel Gibson or Liam Neeson in a kilt can you get one of your native heroes onscreen. Not that Gerard Butler hasn't tried. He's long cherished plans of starring in a biopic of Scottish poet Robert Burns. The problem has always been one of financing -- even after 300, Butler wasn't able to convince anyone to fund the film, apparently due to a combination of no one outside of Scotland remembering or caring who Robert Burns was, and no one quite knowing who this "Gerard Butler guy" was. (I imagine Scottish heroes are probably easier to market to overseas audiences if they're wielding massive claymores instead of pens.)
That may soon change. According to The Times, Butler hopes to get his chance in 2009. Vadim Jean is attached to direct, and James Cosmo is set to produce. (Presumably, Butler might as well since...

Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, following his journey...

AUSTRALIAby Eric Sloss, Writer The epic is a dying breed in Hollywood. Epics usually are expensive to make with long running times, which equates to less screenings during the day. This puts even more pressure for films like this to have big weekends to justify the large budgets. Director Baz Luhrmann is ready to buck these odds with his latest film, “Australia”. Luhrmann’s last film was the exhilarating and sometimes dizzying “Moulin Rouge!”. Luhrmann is not shy about what he puts on the screen. He usually throws everything into the mix and sees what sticks. This is can be an asset and a debit at the same time. His movies are never boring though. “Australia” is a master work from Luhrmann that works on many levels. With a running time of over 2 ½ hours, it covers a lot of ground but never drags. It begins in September of 1939 in the Northern Territory,...
