People who discover the provocative pre-Code movies made in the early 1930s inevitably become fans of leading man Warren William, an urbane actor (sometimes referred to as the poor man’s John Barrymore) who starred in so many memorable films of that period: Beauty and the Boss, Skyscraper Souls, The Mouthpiece, Employees Entrance, The Dark Horse, Three on a Match, The Match King, and many more. He also gave fine performances as Dave the Dude in Frank Capra’s Lady for a Day and served Cecil B. DeMille well as Julius Caesar in Cleopatra. He played a number of prominent detectives including Philo Vance and lawyer/sleuth Perry Mason before starring in his own B movie series as The ...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This […]

For months, every vaguely smart WWE fan has been predicting the demise of the company’s most dominant and consistently-pushed stable, The Shield. After all, it’s been telegraphed for a long time now.
Roman Reigns is huge, is booked as a powerhouse, and is from a giant wrestling family that happens to include The Rock. It took him ten months to be pinned on television following The Shield’s debut in November 2012. He scored virtually unprecedented eliminations at 2013’s Survivor Series (Aja Kong performed similarly in 1995), winning his team’s match as the only one left standing.
He broke the Royal Rumble record for the most eliminations there too, coming in halfway through to basically straight-up murder twelve men. So it was obvious to anyone with a brain that, sooner rather than later, The Shield would split when Reigns moved on into singles compet… wait a minute.

The Dark Horse Comic, Buffy Season 10 was released earlier in March, and that's as good of a reason as any to look back at the start of the heroine's journey. (Also note that James Marsters and Nicholas Brendon are also a part of the Buffy Season 10 team, as writers. Ohmygodsoamazingwhat!)
During its run on television, and after, Buffy the Vampire Slayer inspired the creation of philosophical books, college courses, Joss Whedon's equally profound and fun spin-off series Angel, and countless Buffy-like fictional characters. Buffy herself became an icon of epic proportions. The show also changed the way people viewed television – not just in the experience of watching it, but how it was considered as a medium for telling powerful stories.
Season One is where it all began (well, actually ... it all began with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, but I digress) and it's interesting to see how...

How could Prometheus 2 expand on its predecessor? As Fox confirms the sequel's March 2016 release date, we take a speculative look...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Prometheus and much speculation about its sequel.
Ridley Scott's Prometheus was a film of opposites. It explored grand ideas about myths and creation, yet its setting was a desolate and largely empty planet that offered few conclusive answers. It was about alien beings blessed with godlike, unfathomable intelligence, yet the human scientists who went off to meet them were a neurotic, hapless bunch.
Reactions to Prometheus from critics and series fans were mixed, but the box office receipts piled high enough to encourage 20th Century Fox to consider a sequel. Ridley Scott and cast members Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender had been talking about the possibility of a follow-up as long ago as 2012, when the director...

The dark horse of Marvel.s cinematic universe, James Gunn.s upcoming sci-fi/comedy/action-adventure Guardians of the Galaxy doesn.t have as big a built-in fanbase as Iron Man or Captain America, but that doesn.t make them any less rabid and faithful. A fine example of that intense following occurred after Tuesday.s release of Guardians. highly anticipated first trailer, which utilized the Blue Swede song "Hooked on a Feeling" to frame all of the action and humor. On Wednesday alone, the single was bought and downloaded over 2,000 times, boosting its sales over 700%. A lot of people are once again hooked on this song, or perhaps they.re just caught on one of Groot.s limbs. And the week still isn.t officially over, so those numbers will probably be much higher when Billboard.s final tallies are reported. Compare that to last week, when the song.s...

Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron's space thriller starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney leads the pack of nominations at this year's Bafta awards, taking 11 nominations to the 10 for Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave. The classification of Gravity as a British film, while Slave's backing by Plan B, Brad Pitt's outfit, means it is deemed American, looks to have made the difference, with Gravity scoring nods in both best film and best British film.
Cuaron's film also picked up a huge raft of technical nominations, while McQueen's performed well in more traditional acting and script categories. Meanwhile David O'Russell's American Hustle, did much better than at the London Critics Circle award nominations, where it scored just two.

On a humid Thursday evening, I had the opportunity to reflect on Fantasia`s evolution while in line for the premiere of History of the Devil, a live theatre version of Clive Barker’s stage play of the same name. What was once a one-trick pony, has turned into a real cultural blender, sucking in everything in its path and spitting out a mixed mulch of pulpy genre goodness, whether it be musical acts, live theatre, short films, art expos, parties, etc. The dark horse that could sure came a long way and if what I saw in front of me is a taste of what we should expect for the future (re: this wasn`t Fantasia’s first theatre production, but it was certainly their most accomplished), then we should all stand up and welcome a completely new and long overdue audience to the festivities: the ever finicky theatre crowd.

Comics anthologies are tough to get right. DC’s Bizarro World, Marvel’s Strange Tales, The Dark Horse Book Of…, Batman Black and White, and generally most of MySpace/Dark Horse Presents were more misses than hits. The ones I remember really liking were Drawn and Quarterly’s Showcases and Anthologies, and a couple volumes of MySpace/Dark Horse Presents. I say all of this because despite Ugli Studios being an indie outfit putting out an anthology that’s not very good, even the Big 2 have a hard time putting out a strong comics anthology themselves. It’s not who has the biggest reach, it’s the quality of the material and more often than not comics anthologies don’t have much quality material.
Unfortunately this anthology doesn’t contain much quality material. Ugli Studios Presents #2 is a collection of 3 short stories by David Paul, Jason Lenox, Brian Allen and Joseph Freistuhler,...

We reveal Digital Spy readers' rankings for this year's Final Five Apprentice candidates.
5. Jordan Poulton - 8.46%
Has he got the stomach for the final battle?
After his wretch-inducing performance in last week's boardroom, there's going to have to be one of the biggest boardroom turnarounds in Apprentice history for him to survive the semi-final. Does the Oxford grad have a secret weapon up his sleeve? You guys clearly don't think so.
4. Francesca MacDuff-Varley - 10.15%
The dark horse of the competition.
Edging ahead of Jordan and in fourth place in your rankings, is Francesca who wants to take her dance business nationwide with the help of Lord Sugar. She's been pretty quiet and kept out of trouble so far in the contest. She may be too much of a 'cautious Carol' for Lord Sugar's liking.
3. Luisa Zissman - 17.17%

Here are a few photos from Las Vegas' CinemaCon giving us our first look at the posters for Spike Lee's Oldboy remake, James Wan's Insidious Chapter 2 and the comic book adaptation of R.I.P.D. I'm looking forward to seeing how all of these movies turn out. Thanks to Collider for the pics! Which of the three are you most excited about?
Oldboy follows the story of an advertising executive who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker and ultimately to an illusive man who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

There is a lot to come from young Jaden Smith. At the age of 14 he is dating Kylie Jenner, hanging out with Bieber and oh by the way he is the son of Will Smith. The two have already shared success on the screen together and they look to continue in M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth.
The real question to ask is will this finally be a movie all fans will enjoy from Shyamalan? Because, lets be honest folks, the run hasn’t been good. The name still sparks a blockbuster status but the films of late have not held up to the hype. Maybe the Smith team can change all that with Jaden taking the lead role in the upcoming film.

It's been more than three years since Shane Acker's directorial debut, the animated film 9, arrived in theaters, but finally the filmmaker has found his next project. Reel FX has hired Acker to helm Beasts of Burden, a brand new animated film that will be based on the Dark Horse comic series by Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson. The story in the film is set in a small town called Burden Hill where all kinds of supernatural strangeness regularly occurs. The protectors of the town and its inhabitants are a group of five dogs named Ace, Rex, Jack, Whitey, and Pugsley as well as a cat named Orphan. The characters first appeared in The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings, which was first released in August 2003. Variety, which reported the news of Acker's hiring, says that writer Darren Lemke (Jack The Giant Slayer, Shrek Forever After) will be handling screenwriting duties,...

Shane Acker is returning to the realm of animated film. The "9" director will next tackle the CG animated feature "Beasts of Burden," based on the Dark Horse Comics series of the same name.
Reel FX announced the partnership, and says that "Turbo" scribe Darren Lemke is writing the script for the movie. Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson wrote the comic books, which tell the story of a group of animals that look into various paranormal events that happen in their Burden Hill neighborhood. Sounds like a story that's right up Acker's alley.
The central characters of "Beasts of Burden" are five dogs named Whitey, Jack, Red, Ace and Pugsley and a cat named Orphan. The characters first appeared in 2003 in "The Dark Horse Book of Haunting," and have had their own standalone graphic novels since.

This year's Outguess Ebert contest seems a little like shooting fish in a barrel. For the first time in many a year, maybe ever, I think I've guessed every one correctly.
A few years ago, I came across an article about the newly identified psychological concept of Elevation. Scientists claim it is as real as love or fear. It describes a state in which we feel unreasonable joy; you know, like when you sit quiet and still and tingles run up and down your back, and you think things can never get any better.
I tried applying it to that year's Oscar nominees. Did it work any better than any other approach? You need Elevating nominees. An example of Elevation would be when the bone morphs into a space station in "2001." Did I feel Elevation in making any of my Guesses this year. That doesn't mean it was a bad year at the movies.

The 18.5" replica of Mass Effect's flying, murderous behemoth, Sovereign, is coming from Dark Horse Comics' Deluxe line of fine collectibles as is available for preorder in what they're saying will be an ultra-limited edition.
Dark Horse isn't able to comment yet on the final production number for the release, but they're putting it somewhere in the realm of 1,000 units produced. And it's not going to be cheap, either: it'll run you $349.99 when it's available on June 26, 2013.
Some backstory on the statue:
This craft is the flagship of the rogue Spectre Saren Arterius. Responsible for leading a devastating attack on the Citadel in the original Mass Effect game, Sovereign is an enormous sentient dreadnought larger than two kilometers in length. The Dark Horse re-creation of Sovereign also has a sculpted base depicting a devastated city and planetary surface to convey its huge scale.

With the recent string of injuries decimating the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (Ufc) roster, the title picture in several divisions has been left quite murky.
With that in mind, we’ve decided to put together an article will take a look at each division and breakdown what matches have been made, will be made, or should be made for each of the respective titles.
Here we go…
Flyweight (125 lbs.)
Current title holder: Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson
Although Ufc 152 determined the first ever flyweight champion and placed the division prominently on the card as the co-main event, the 125-pounders remain the least known fighters on the Ufc roster. With an increasing amount of 135-pounders dropping to flyweight, the next 12 months should witness the development of a much more competitive landscape. However, the immediate title contenders are quite limited due to the division’s lack of exposure.

The competition only gets tougher, and deeper, as we move on to the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series race. Chicago – Rarely has a program returned for its second season with as much confidence, improved storytelling skills, and overall entertainment value as TNT’s “Falling Skies,” returning tonight, June 17, 2012. While the first season was good, the two-hour premiere hints at a show that really could be great and stands as the best pair of episodes the producers have yet delivered. Even if you weren’t interested in season one (recently released on Blu-ray and DVD), you should check out tonight’s sci-fi action. Genre material doesn’t get much better than this on TV.
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
In nearly every quantifiable category, “Falling Skies” feels improved at the start of season two. It’s overall just a more confident program. Season one was a good show about how average people responded to ordinary circumstances. While it was dramatically engaging, it also got a bit repetitive and certainly was built on a...

Parent Trapped: Solondz Does Arrested Development
The latest from provocative filmmaker Todd Solondz, Dark Horse, seems deceptively simple, already touted as one of his most accessible films. However, although this film’s subject matter may be more comfortable for mass consumption than past Solondz films, its simplicity is only skin deep and its nightmarish melancholy isn’t as simple to casually term as more or less accessible. While it’s not Solondz’s strongest or best feature, it’s an earnestly rendered film and it is of course, filmed with his offbeat, trademark style.
The dark horse of the narrative is Abe (Jordan Gelber), a man-child suffering from an overt case of arrested development. He lives with his parents (Christopher Walken and Mia Farrow) and wastes everyone’s time in a prime position at his father’s business, and is often reminded that he failed to manage to do anything with his life.

Please read the past three week’s installments before reading this. Thanks!
What has gone before, quick and dirty recap… I’d sold (in my opinion) the second greatest idea in the history of comics to one of the greatest publishers (DC Comics) in the business. It was to be written by one of the greatest writers (Dwayne McDuffie) with art by a guy (me) who was going to make sure this time he got it right. The editor assigned to it wanted me off the project I created. Dwayne told the editor he would not do the project without me.
I told the editor to kiss my ass (at a bar during the San Diego Comic Con some years after all this went down and after Jenette Kahn had left DC). See previous installments as to why I didn’t tell him to kiss my ass while Jenette was there.

Speaking with The Playlist while promoting Safe House, frequent Cbm actor Ryan Reynolds talks about his next venture in the genre, R.I.P.D. - based on the Dark Horse graphic novel of the same name. Reynolds says that he 'would like' the film to have a sequel, even saying that (plot-wise) it's set up for such a sequel if the first film's successful... "I'm hoping to be able to work with all those people again," Reynolds said. "It could be a franchise. It certainly is set up, plot-wise, for a sequel. But nobody's signed on for that just yet. We would like it to be [a film series.]" Below is some plot info surrounding the graphic novel/film... The Dark Horse comic R.I.P.D. is adapted by Universal Pictures with this fantasy crime film focusing on a newly deceased cop (Ryan Reynolds) who's drafted into a squad of zombie cops that battle the supernatural. Kevin Bacon is wearing a motion capture outfit for the first time on set. This image leads me to believe that his character will become a ghostly character as well. And it looks like he is going to be assaulting Ryan Reynold's wife in the movie played by Stephanie Szostak. Photos courtesy of boston.com The cast and crew of “R.I.P.D.’’ filmed on Batterymarch Street in the Financial District over the weekend. Spotted on set were the movie’s villain, Kevin Bacon, and actress Stephanie Szostak, who plays the wife of the film’s hero, Ryan Reynolds. Bacon wore one of those crazy-looking CGI suits while Szostak (or her body double - we can’t tell) hung upside down from a crane.
