Three suspects and one of them is a murderer
Paularoc25 March 2013
A Crime Does Not Pay Subject. As is typical in this series, there are no acting credits. A little girl, in tears, runs to a neighbor's house and tells him her parents are hurt. The neighbor (George Cleveland) rushes to the girl's house and finds the mother bound and unconscious and in the bedroom, the father is dead. Cleveland's later and best remembered role was as Gramps on "Lassie." Come to find out, both the mother and father were drugged and the father then strangled. At first it appears as a burglary gone wrong as the woman's jewelry is missing. The couple had been to a party on the night of the murder and the police find that there were three men who had heated rows with the husband. The police investigation and eventual capture of the murderer is fairly interesting but despite the strong opening to this short, this entry is only average.

About average....but that still is quite good.

Warning: Spoilers
The "Crime Does Not Pay" series of shorts from MGM were very good crime films. True to the titles, the films all illustrate examples where criminals ultimately are caught and prosecuted for their evil deeds. What made the films good is that they tended to emphasize realism and actual police work--and so the films are not just entertaining but educational.

"Foolproof" begins with a neighbor following a crying child back to her house. It seems that someone has broken in--sedating the mother and father and robbing them. However, and this is rather inexplicable, the father was then murdered AFTER he was sedated--and naturally this made the cops suspicious. What follows is a lengthy investigation that establishes that the robbery actually was done to cover up the murder--and the perpetrator and his accomplice receive their just due.

Well written and fascinating. The only negative is that this one is just a tad predictable...but still quite good.
