Plot Summary

Mathias Pascal, saddled with a stupid wife and a nagging mother-in-law, leaves home and is extremely lucky at several gambling resorts. He returns home and discovers that a drowned man, fished out of the river, bears an uncanny likeness to him and is being buried by his family as him. This, to him, is a pleasant turn of events and he goes to Rome, where he falls in love with Louise Paleari. Count Papiano, a jealous suitor of Louise's, threatens him with arrest unless he produces credentials to prove his identity. Written by Les Adams

Did You Know?

Edit
Trivia Pierre Chenal initially worked on the screenplay with writer Armand Salacrou but the two men failed to agree on the mood and style envisaged by the director. Chenal engaged instead the distinguished poet and playwright Roger Vitrac. Salacrou's name remained in the credits while Vitrac's appeared only as additional dialogue writer. See more »
Goofs When Pascal is in the railroad station (in the 177 minute version of the film) the train is standing still and pointed right. When the train moves, it goes to the left. Both shots show the train on the same track nearest the platform. See more »
