Losing most of my chances to view things this week thanks to parties with friends I decided to get back on track this weekend with film viewing. Finding a second British Musical box set from Network,I got set to meet Kathleen Mavourneen.
The plot:
After living in Liverpool for years, Kathleen O'Moore decides to move back to Ireland. While she meets up with family,O'Moore catches the eye of singer Michael Rooney and a wealthy landowner. As O'Moore gets on tracks with a love triangle, a horse racing scandal goes off the tracks for Rooney.
View on the film:
Whilst the picture itself is pretty clear, Network leave the soundtrack with a muffled quality, which makes some of the dialogue tough to hear. Going deep into rural Ireland, director Norman Lee misses the comedic footing he found for A Political Party, with a rickety stage-bound atmosphere,of unsteady shots that creek under the floorboards, that leave the Musical numbers in a bare bones state. Galloping in their adaptation, the screenplay by John Glen and Marjorie Deans fail to get any toes tapping,as the plodding love Michael Rooney has fails to get past Kathleen's starting line
