Too bad the full print is missing.

Warning: Spoilers
Republic pictures notoriously edited anything that they had made that was over an hour long down two reels so it could fit into an hour air time in TV for at least 10 minutes of commercials. I've seen a large percents of their films, and 7 out of 10 approximately exist in incompleteness. This well made Ramon Novarro romantic screwball comedy is one of those films apparently, the only print I could locate of it only 47 minutes.

The film deals with a French painter (Navarro) who discovers that the portrait he did strictly from his imagination looks like a beautiful socialite (Margaret Tallichet), daughter of the most unlikely millionaire, Andrew Tombes, who resembles Phil Silvers. Marian Marsh, second billed to Navarro, plays the sister, but newcomer Tallichet gets special credited billing. Eric Blore plays Navarro's overly protective valet. Hard to judge this with the print I saw, but it doesn't seem to have major plot points cut. Elegant and romantic, an art decco dream, from the biggest of the second tier major movie studios.

The Painting on the Wall
Maleejandra3 September 2006
A painter (Ramon Novarro) paints a portrait of the girl of his dreams, but he's never met her before. At a party, he meets her (Marian Marsh), a beautiful woman who is already engaged. The painter feels they are destined to be together, but she has other plans. Her sister (Margaret Tallichet), however, takes a liking to the charming artist and does all she can to win him over. In the meantime, the painting becomes public and risks scandal for both the artist and the subject.

This film is fast paced and a joy to watch. Although it was not made by a major studio, it is obvious that all involved are talented and give a strong effort to contribute to the movie. Perhaps the most famous name in the cast is Novarro's, a silent movie star whose stardom declined during the talkie era. He is suave and attractive as always.
