Included as an extra in the Warner DVD of 'The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)'
Because of incorrect information (probably obtained from the US copyright register), Ben Hardaway was often listed as the second director of this film. Later, a title card of this film was discovered stating the second director was actually Cal Howard. The complete opening titles of this film are, however, considered lost.
There are several references in the dialogue and lyrics of this cartoon that the 21st Century viewer might not know:
"Make it sound like Kostelanetz" refers to Andre Kostelanetz, a Russian-born American conductor and arranger of popular orchestral music.
"Trucking" was a dance introduced at the Cotton Club in 1933 and "Pecking" was a dance introduced there in 1937.
"But Rhythm's Wall they're keeping" refers to a brand of clock called the Rhythm Wall clock, which kept a clear, almost musical time rhythm. (c.f. the clock the nerdy cat uses to help himself find the rhythm)
The sultry girl cat tosses the dunce cat's fraternity pin back at him, indicating they are no longer "pinned"---engaged to be engaged at the time.
The student desks are empty sardine and other fish tins.
