Audiences at the time would have known he was referring to Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan (1907-1995), an American flyer who famously claimed he flew from New York to Ireland instead of to California in July 1938 in error due to heavy clouds. He never admitted to making the transatlantic flight on purpose, despite being denied permission to do so several times.
