Here's another Pete Smith Special, in which Pete narrates a short about the importance of the weatherman, how he helps keep us from coming to a halt as a society by peering at scientific-looking gizmos, and helps farmers in getting their food to us.
This short, directed impeccably by Fred Zinneman -- as he would direct shorts and features impeccably for decades and decades -- shows the story of an orange farmer, alerted by the weather service of an impending frost, trying to save his crop and even his orange trees from deadly cold.
Although I am very fond of Pete Smith and his snarky voice, he seems to have phoned this one in. Usually he sounds like someone who's not as funny as he thinks, telling corny jokes. Here he drones, as if simply reading the text off the page for the first time.
