It MIGHT be fine and dandy to view this as a simple story of pigs and bears . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . if we lived in Simpler Times than Today. But with the Repugs about to insure premature demise (aka, "murder") for MILLIONS of our poorest U.S. Citizens this week, according to the Congressional Budget Office, it is urgently incumbent upon EVERY American to study those unparalleled prognosticators of Our Homeland's upcoming Calamities, Catastrophes, Cataclysms, and Apocalypti, Warner Bros.' Animated Shorts Seers division (aka, The Looney Tuners) for the clues that they've provided as Warner's Extreme Early Warning System. THE CHEWIN' BRUIN focuses upon what to do with History's Greatest Thief of American values, Red Commie KGB Chief Vlad "The Mad Russian" Putin, symbolized here by Russia's national mascot, the bruin (or bear, for you unfortunate graduates of a Deplorable Betsy "Amway Calling" DeVos Charter "Learning" Shack). While plotting the World's biggest theft ever--ONE TRILLION BUCKS, or half of the failed USSR nation-state's wealth--Putin recruited the Rump\Kushner Crime Syndicate as his Money-Launderers-in-Chief. They, of course, coveted The Order of Lenin, so they volunteered to turn over AMER!CA'S WEALTH to Putin, as well, by stealing it from those who depend on SNAP, Medicare, Planned Parenthood, Social Security, Medicaid, the EPA, the FDA, the NHTSB, etc. Warner warns us at the end of THE CHEWIN' BRUIN that simply beheading the Russian Bear (Putin) will not be enough to curtail the Russian Threat, now that Putin has taken over EVERY aspect of U.S. Government and brainwashed 100 million fellow travelers. Only the fires of Nuclear War provide a chance to cleanse Our Planet of the Putin\Rump\Kushner Plague. But there's a Silver Lining in every cloud: the resulting Nuclear Winter is bound to ease Global Warming!

Porky Pig and the bear
TheLittleSongbird16 January 2018
Love animation, it was a big part of my life as a child, particularly Disney, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, and still love it whether it's film, television or cartoons.

Have more often than not had a lot of respect and appreciation for Bob Clampett, and while not quite one of my favourite Looney Tunes characters (prefer those with consistently stronger, funnier and interesting personalities) Porky has always been very easy to like. 'The Chewin Bruin' is another example of it representing both well.

Clampett's distinctive style, even if not as outrageous or anarchic as other cartoons of his, is very obvious here. Porky is endearing as ever very effectively plays it straight, is used well and is actually treated like a lead, after having cartoons where he feels more like underutilised support. Even funnier and more interesting, and just as likeable, is the bear and he is a very amusing storyteller.

Mel Blanc is outstanding as always. He always was the infinitely more preferable voice for Porky, Joe Dougherty never clicked with me, and he proves it here. Blanc shows an unequalled versatility and ability to bring an individual personality to every one of his multiple characters in a vast majority of his work, there is no wonder why he was in such high demand as a voice actor.

Animation is excellent, it's fluid in movement, crisp in shading and very meticulous in detail. Ever the master, Carl Stalling's music is typically superb. It is as always lushly orchestrated, full of lively energy and characterful in rhythm, not only adding to the action but also enhancing it.

'The Chewin Bruin' is very well paced, very funny and well-engineered. It may not be laugh a minute or consistently hilarious and the story is not much of one, but actually there is very little wrong here. Clampett and Porky may not be at their best but they are both represented well.

Overall, well made and enjoyable. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Has ups but no downs

This was a pretty funny short. A lot of neat sight gags and just all around hilarious Warner Bros. material. Even though this one doesn't have my absolute favorites (Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck) I still enjoy watching this one.
