In the 20-plus years since “Shrek” burned up the box office, the fairytale with a postmodern twist has become such a standardized genre, one wonders whether kids might be slightly thrown by one that plays out completely in earnest. They aren’t about to be tested in that regard by “The Amazing Maurice,” a loose, goofy riff on The Pied Piper of Hamelin that takes every available opportunity to draw viewers’ attention to the traditions being broken, or at least irreverently lampshaded. But courtesy of source material by offbeat fantasy maestro Terry Pratchett, it’s genuinely eccentric enough — with its sly talking cat, intrepid band of gold-hearted rats and chronic aversion to keeping the fourth wall intact — to come off as charming rather than smarmy.
Pratchett’s sensibility fuses comfortably with that of veteran screenwriter Terry Rossio — the man behind “Shrek,” among other blockbusters — in a film that tilts slightly...

Teresa Wright: Later years (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon.") Teresa Wright and Robert Anderson were divorced in 1978. They would remain friends in the ensuing years.[1] Wright spent most of the last decade of her life in Connecticut, making only sporadic public appearances. In 1998, she could be seen with her grandson, film producer Jonah Smith, at New York's Yankee Stadium, where she threw the ceremonial first pitch.[2] Wright also became involved in the Greater New York chapter of the Als Association. (The Pride of the Yankees subject, Lou Gehrig, died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 1941.) The week she turned 82 in October 2000, Wright attended the 20th anniversary celebration of Somewhere in Time, where she posed for pictures with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. In March 2003, she was a guest at the 75th Academy Awards, in the segment showcasing Oscar-winning actors of the past. Two years later,...

“What’s in a name? That which we call a roseBy any other name would smell as sweet.” Shakespeare wasn’t thinking about Richard’s company when he wrote those lines, but the Bard put more thought into naming conventions than Silicon Valley’s budding young CEO did. Not only did Richard fail to check if “Pied Piper” was trademarked to another company, he also neglected to read the story of Hamelin’s most notorious visitor. In the business world, we call that “doing one’s due diligence.” In “Articles of Incorporation,” it becomes more and more apparent that Richard hasn’t done his.A Pied Piper company already exists in California, but before I get to how that strengthens Richard’s leadership skills, let’s talk about the Pied Piper legend. The details vary from storyteller to storyteller, but the gist is this: The Pied Piper strolls into Hamelin...

Let’s say there’s a show you’re really starting to dig. It’s not your favorite show, not by a long shot, but you’ve been getting into it recently. And let’s say you’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last three episodes of the aforementioned series — you’ve described them as works of art and pure poetry. The season finale approaches. You’re almost as excited as when Game of Thrones premiered back in March. You believe you’re about to witness a TV miracle. Before you even watch the episode, your brain goes into overdrive as you think of ways to praise the magnificent acting and brilliant dialogue in your review. Let’s say you watch the episode, and… “Meh.”
That’s right. “Meh.” It’s not “Meh, this is a subpar show anyway.” This is more like “Meh, after Try, Reckoning and Six Minutes, I sorta expected something majestic.

This was it. That final play that would either seal the deal for The Killing as a season worthy of its return... or collapse like a cardboard box under all the pressure of trying to close the lid on such a solid set of episodes.
Wonderfully, "From Up Here; The Road to Hamelin" delivered not only the actual identity of the killer, but- through a riveting two hours - the right dose of humor, some solid surprises, a tragic twist and a final shocking gun shot that closed the case of "The Pied Piper," yet left the door wide open for Linden and Holder's journey to continue.
I'm glad all of the core characters had their stories pretty much wrapped up before hitting that final course of focus on the killer.
Really, the end result of Seward's death in "Six Minutes" and ultimately the arrest and probable conviction of Joe Mills...

That’s right! The Pied Piper of R&B is the star of the new "Love Letter Cruise," which sails next October. If you book by Dec. 17, you can lock up a two-person cabin on Kelly's love boat for a cool $500 deposit, securing you a spot on the five-day trip with the controversial crooner, who is slated to perform a "romantic" set. If that’s not incentive enough, you can also sign up for step classes or a "12 Play" basketball game to sweat out the calories from all those all-you-can-eat buffets.

Late Apple co-founder almost singlehandedly brought music industry into the future.

Few people can legitimately claim to have changed the course of history. Apple's Steve Jobs is one of those people.
The pied piper of the digital revolution and co-founder of Apple Inc., started in his parents' garage in the mid-1970s, died Wednesday at the age of 56 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. If Jobs had only co-founded Apple — the technology company with the highest valuation on earth at the moment and the one that taught the world to use a mouse, touch a screen to make a phone call and store a lifetime of music on a pocket-size device — that would be enough.
But Jobs did much more than that. He changed the course of history with a series of science-fiction-like leaps that left his competitors in the dust,...

If you missed it earlier this week, Buzzfeed has a gallery of 60 Gay Couples who were married in New York over the weekend. Someone pointed out that the whole matchy-matchy concept between groom/groom and bride/bride was a little. . .interesting. I mean, when I get married it's going to be an über obnoxious "Look At Me I'm So Pretty" kind of day. If my lesbian bride Kate Winslet shows up wearing the same thing, Imma be pissed. While we're on the subject of dressing alike, here is a supremely weird yet kind of fascinating tumblr Pinky McLadybits sent me. (I Like Looking Like Other People)
And while I do have those bridezilla instincts, sometimes I feel like a total failure as a female of the species. I mean, ladies and drag queens, what is the deal with fake eyelashes? Why Are They Impossible To Put On? Why Would You Put Glue Near Your Eyeball?...

Wristcutters: A Love Story Dir. Goran Dukic (2006) A slight digression: musician and sometime actor, Eugene Hutz, best known for his work as Gogol Bordello's frontman and as Alex in the film version of Everything is Illuminated, must have the charisma of 1000 suns. Or the type of charisma that inspires people to become obsessed with him. There's a documentary on him, The Pied Piper of Hutzovina, and Madonna's debut as a director, Filth and Wisdom, is mostly centered around Hutz. Wristcutters: A Love Story, has a central character of Eugene, a Russian musician played by actor Shea Whigham, who is based on Hutz. Imagine how charismatic and interesting Hutz must be to inspire so many people's art... Mindboggling, right? And in Wristcutters, Eugene shows our hero, Zia (an all-grown-up Patrick Fugit), around the afterlife limbo for suicides where the movie is set. Based on the short story Kneller's Happy Campers...

Shrek Forever After (** out of 4)
The creative team behind “Shrek” says “Shrek Forever After,” the fourth in the nine-year-old fairy tale franchise, will be the last. At least, until the next “Shrek” film comes out.
Hollywood rarely kills a cash cow. Not until every last drop has been milked from those money-producing udders. So if this fourth “Shrek” lures as many families as its predecessors — and earns potentially more dough thanks to increased 3-D ticket prices — you can safely bet the house on a fifth adventure.
And my feelings about that would be … well, indifference, I suppose. The “Shrek” franchise, which stars Mike Myers as the surly, Scottish-voiced ogre, has run its course. How could it not? When has the fourth film in any series been truly memorable? Even “The Godfather” franchise died a horrible death on its third try.
The latest “Shrek” adventure occupies a strange limbo.

#1 James Cameron to redo “The Fantastic Voyage”
Now don’t be getting too excited because there’s no news that Cameron will direct the project but Variety does report that Cameron is producing the film and from what I can gather, the project (and a few more to follow) is an effort to make use and money from the expensive technology he spent years prepping for Avatar. It’s a great opportunity to remake this sci-fi classic but with “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” writer Shane Salerno on board to adapt the original story, I can’t say I’m all that excited.
#2 Natalie Portman starring in “Pride Prejudice and Zombies”
This seems like an odd pairing but Portman does have the looks for period drama though I’m not sure what possessed her to agree to a period piece about a man searching for love amidst a zombie outbreak. Portman...
