Sugata Sanshiro (1943)
** (out of 4)
Sanshiro Sagata (Susumu Fujita) is a young man with a hot temper who is in Japan studying judo. His hot temper gets him into a lot of trouble but the Master (Denjiro Okochi) thinks that with the proper training Sagata can become one of the best men out there. This first film from the legendary Kurosawa was pretty disappointing from start to finish. I got excited when I saw this was part of the Toho company but the film really suffers from a horrible screenplay or the fact that the studio re-edited the film and this is all we have to view. Either way, it's hard for anything here to really stick out to where you'd say that this director had all these classics ahead of him. I think the biggest problem is that the film is clearly meant to be a character study yet the characters never grow. We see Sagata as a trouble maker and then, pretty much in the matter of minutes, he's a stern and likable character. Where did this transformation come from? One of the big scenes involves a police competition, which Sagata must win for his Master but he must go up against the father of a girl he's fallen in love with. Once again, when did he fall in love? We get one scene with the two and yet we have another large character change that never gets explained. The performances were pretty good and the final fight sequence was nice but there really isn't anything here that stands out on its own. The pacing of the film was nice and went by pretty fast, which was a good thing.
