Prominent Italian producer Aurelio De Laurentiis has teamed up with the National Italian American Foundation (Niaf) to establish a film production grant program supporting aspiring filmmakers with compelling stories to tell about Italian and Italian American experiences.
De Laurentiis, who is the nephew of the late great movie mogul Dino De Laurentiis and a mogul in his own right — his Filmauro banner has released more than 400 movies — has long been supporting young filmmakers by financing the Venice Film Festival’s $100,000 “Luigi De Laurentiis” award for best first work.
The nascent Niaf/De Laurentiis Film Prizes will award a $10,000 grant this year to five selected applicants toward producing a short film project in any genre, including documentaries. The best project will be awarded an additional $10,000, plus a mentorship directly with De Laurentiis and his Filmauro team.
The five award-winning films will premiere at the Niaf 50th anniversary gala in Washington, D.

Harper’s Bizarre: DuVall Reinvents the Queerness of Holiday Traditions
Across a wide variety of genres and narratives, going home for the holidays, and the intended cheerfulness of these and traditions in general, are ripe for their effective universality and entertainment value. At a certain point in Hollywood, these traditions also served as formidable juxtapositions of the facades we cling to vs. the dire reality of those who, for various reasons, were denied access to the heteronormative bliss of celebratory staples.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: What’s the best Christmas movie for people who hate Christmas movies?
Ken Bakely (@kbake_99), Freelance for Film Pulse
If you want a movie that emulates the feeling of the holidays without being directly about them, look no further than Todd Haynes’s “Carol,” with the film’s first act taking place against the backdrop of the last days before Christmas. In establishing its characters and setting, everything from the winter weather, crowded department stores, and putting up Christmas trees is included with a delicate sense of detail that is simply haunting. It’s emblematic of how note-perfect and intimately precise the entire movie is, sublimely starting at a time of year rooted in high expectations and the feeling of possibility, and expanding out from there in the development of its central romance,...
