It’s just one theater, with six screens. But news that the landlord for the Lincoln Plaza Theaters —on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, across the street from Lincoln Center — is not renewing the lease for its present (and only) operators, longtime exhibitors and distributors Dan and Toby Talbot, could be the biggest news in specialized film this year.
Totaling a little over 1,000 seats, Lincoln Plaza has been the most important single theater in the domestic specialized market since its opening in 1981. Though it no longer provides the biggest grosses for most independent and other arthouse releases, it remains the single most vital location for launching subtitled and other high-end titles in the U.S.
Initial reports say the Talbots — dominant forces for over 50 years in the New York specialized film business — were unable to make a deal to continue operation. The landlord, Milstein Properties — has not confirmed that it will continue as a theater.

When it comes to collecting recent accolades like Windsor International Film Festival’s lifetime achievement award, Lois Smith, who made her film debut in 1955’s East of Eden opposite James Dean and has had notable roles in Twisterand on True Blood, says it’s mostly a matter of longevity. “Those words,” she tells Et, referring to lifetime achievement, “are a little alarming.” But all the recent fuss, as she describes it, comes as the longtime actress is earning the best reviews of her career for Marjorie Prime, a sci-fi film directed by Michael Almereyda based on the Pulitzer Prize-nominated play by Jordan Harrison.
“It’s not why one does the work, but it’s nice when it happens,” Smith says ever-so-diplomatically as she’s perched on a sofa in the lobby of the Thompson Hotel, just outside the Loop neighborhood of downtown Chicago.

More speculation is surrounding The Weeknd's dating life.
On Monday night, the 27-year-old singer was seen having dinner with Katy Perry at Madeo in West Hollywood, California.
An eyewitness tells Et that The Weeknd -- wearing an all-black outfit that he paired with a denim jacket and gray hoodie -- entered the eatery at 8:45 p.m., just 15 minutes before Perry showed up in a mid-length nude coat that she accessorized with large hoop earrings and nude heels.

A customer at Madeo told the eyewitness that the 33-year-old pop star was indeed at the same table as The Weeknd. After spending three hours at the restaurant, the two left separately around midnight within minutes of one another, according to the eyewitness.

A source tells Et that the "Starboy" singer has been in touch with his ex-girlfriend, Bella Hadid, after his breakup with Gomez.

According to the source, reconnecting with The Weeknd has been "easy" for Hadid, who has only become more in-demand as a model since her breakup with the singer.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein story and all that it involves — as people reconsider their relationship to the Miramax films of the ’90s (or don’t) and brace for a new Woody Allen movie, etc. — we return to an age-old question that could always stand to be asked anew: How should the backstory of a film and / or its makers impact the way we receive it?

Noah Baumbach’s new movie “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” may soon be streaming on Netflix, but it feels like something you might watch a faded print of in some cramped Greenwich Village theater of days gone by. Portraying the pain and pathos of the neurotic progeny of a New York sculptor whose career peaked in the 1970s, “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” benefits from the same lighter touch Baumbach’s direction has shown since “Frances Ha” while also delving into the messy family drama that powered “The Squid and the Whale,” resulting in a work both mature and funny that deals with heavy issues yet is not weighed down by them.

On Sunday, LeAnn Rimes proved once and for all that she has outgrown the child prodigy country music label that launched her career at age 14(!) with the release of the mega-hit record "Blue," making her the youngest artist ever to win a Grammy (she won two).
She was the headliner at Pride Fest in Greenwich Village in NYC and she demonstrated the voice and charisma which has made her a superstar, wowing the massive crowd with "Love Is Love Is Love" and her #1 Billboard Dance Club hit "Long Live Love" -- both off of her latest album Remnants. She capped things off with a remix version of her hit Top 10 single from 2000 "Can't Stop The Moonlight."
She was dressed in a stunning black lacy corset -- provocative and gorgeous -- complete with spike high heels that were the envy of every cross-dresser, transvestite and transsexual in the boisterous crowd.

New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week. March with (gay) pride. At a time when equal rights are, unfortunately, under siege, it has never been more necessary for the Lgbtq community and its allies to stand strong. New York City’s Gay Pride March will strut the streets of Manhattan on June 25, beginning at 36th St. and Fifth Ave., and traveling southbound until it reaches Christopher St. in the historic Greenwich Village. Be loud; be proud. (And keep in mind surrounding bars in the area very often have drink specials to honor the momentous event!) (Free) Savor Sondheim without bells 'n whistles. Returning to Feinstein’s/54 Below for its seventh installment on June 25, “Sondheim Unplugged” will once again deliver selections from the songbook of one of the American theater’s greatest composers, Stephen Sondheim. Featuring cast members from original Broadway productions of “Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd,” this is a can’t-miss event for anyone...

“SNL” comic Michael Che gave a spirited performance at the Comedy Cellar on Friday night — although we’re not sure exactly what kind of spirits were involved or how much.
Fans at the subterranean Greenwich Village comedy institution were amused to find that the “Weekend Update” anchor appeared to have had a drink or two (or more) before taking to the stage.
We’re told by a witness that the comedian was clutching a beer and was, “completely incomprehensible” at the beginning of his performance.

Apparently, not even the rich and famous are immune from the hassles of apartment living. “The Leftovers” star Justin Theroux has filed a lawsuit against his neighbor, claiming that his neighbor has engaged in a “targeted and malicious years-long harassment campaign.” According to Theroux’s lawsuit, filed in New York Supreme Court on Thursday, the actor’s neighbor, Norman Resnicow, has made life at his Greenwich Village co-op miserable. Leonardo DiCaprio and Nina Agdal have split after a year together, and a source tells People that the breakup is “amicable” and that the two “remain friends.”
The split caps a blissful year during which the two captured headlines — and photographers’ lenses — with their glamorous, globe-trotting romance, which spanned posh locales like Ibiza, St. Bart’s and the Bahamas.
The Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, 25, and Oscar-winning actor, 42, had mostly kept their relationship – which kicked off last summer – out of the spotlight. Here’s a look back at everything we know that’s happened since they first linked up.

Indecent Cort Theatre, NYC
Indecent is a strange play. It's like getting a gorgeously wrapped package and finding something insubstantial and vaguely disturbing inside the box.
The packaging of Indecent includes fantastic direction from Rebecca Taichman, engaging writing from Paula Vogel and a near-perfect ensemble of performers. But once you get past the seduction of the production, you have to wonder why so much talent was lavished on what is no more than a historical theatrical footnote.
That footnote is the closing of God of Vengeance on Broadway early in the last century for indecency. The play was apparently a big hit both way downtown (in the thriving Yiddish theater) and mid-downtown in Greenwich Village -- not to mention in many European cities -- but the move to Broadway seems unnecessary, unless the producer purposefully wanted to traffic in scandal.
What's most emotionally compelling about Indecent is also what's most intellectually disturbing about it.

David France’s Oscar-nominated “How to Survive a Plague” was a mesmerizing look at AIDS activism in the eighties and nineties, reconstructed with bountiful archival footage; France’s followup, “The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson,” is a kind of thematic sequel, this time focusing on trans activism during the same time period. Both movies grapple with the reverberations of these dramatic efforts in the present moment, but “The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson” is particularly suspenseful for the way it recollects the past through the prism of a murder mystery, brilliantly fusing an archival history with the elements of a detective story.
Whereas “Plague” explored the efforts of Act Up and other institutions to combat the AIDS epidemic, “The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson” focuses on Greenwich Village “street queen” Johnson, a Stonewall riots hero who died under mysterious circumstances in 1992 when she was...

The mysterious death of a trans icon is front and center in The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive clip of The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson.
The documentary focuses on the late legendary fixture in New York City’s gay ghetto who, along with fellow trans icon Sylvia Rivera, founded Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries, a trans activist group based in the heart of Greenwich Village. Johnson was found floating in the Hudson River in 1992, and though the police pegged her death as a suicide, her comrades have always firmly rejected that claim. It seems like every year there’s a reason to revisit Oscar Isaac and the work that he’s done so far. This year, he may actually get that elusive first Academy Award nomination if things break the right way, but regardless of that, he remains an incredibly exciting actor. Oscar wise (no pun intended), he seems likeliest to contend with George Clooney’s directorial outing Suburbicon, though he also will be seen in a few days in what previously was seen as an awards player in The Promise. Throw in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and he’s an in demand actor, to say the least. As such, another repeat tribute to the man is certainly in order. Isaac deserves it, that’s for sure. This is how I would rank his ten best performances so far: 10. Robin Hood 9. The Two Faces of January 8. In Secret 7. Mojave 6. Star Wars...

You can’t accuse the Tribeca Film Festival (April 19-30) of bandwagon jumping: Back in 2005, it screened the series finale of “Friends” outdoors on a Hudson pier for rapturous fans. Today, TV is a fait d’accompli as Tribeca expands its second annual TV program to 15 shows and five series. Golden-age TV draws viewers, Hollywood filmmakers, and a wider audience.
Last year, the TV program included world premieres of “The Night Of” (HBO, from Oscar-winning executive producer Steve Zaillian), “The Night Manager” (AMC, directed by Oscar-winning Susanne Bier), and “O.J.: Made in America” (Espn, directed by eventual Oscar-winner Ezra Edelman).

In the annals of rich men who look to Hollywood to build a secondary empire, real estate billionaire Charles S. Cohen (Forbes net worth: $2.2 billion) is their Don Quixote. His Cohen Media Group is staking its claim in spaces renowned for their allergies to profit: He’s restoring classic films, releasing foreign-language titles, and moving into specialty exhibition.
One Oscar campaigner calls Cohen’s taste “older middle-of-the-road arthouse,” and that’s exactly the audience he wants. Three of Cohen’s French imports — “Outside the Law” (2010), “Timbuktu” (2014) and “Mustang” (2015) — received foreign-language Academy Award nominations. This year, Cohen (with partner Amazon Studios) took Iranian Cannes-prize-winner Asghar Farhadi’s “The Salesman” all the way to the Oscar, much to the chagrin of established competitors Sony Pictures Classics (“Toni Erdmann”) and Music Box (“A Man Called Ove”).

The hits keep on coming from your friendly neighborhood streaming giant, Netflix, which announced a fresh round of titles hitting the airwaves next month.
