The film seems tailored to Fonda's everyman "Grapes of Wrath" persona; they keep reminding you of the characters humble means with some pretty impressive Art direction of dingy Steel Mills and Factories.
Unfortuantly, the plot simply didn't transfer from the fresh version; and it just seems absurd, dull, and unconvincing. This was Hollywood trying to get at the problems in the lives of the little people; yet the story reeks of cheap melodrama. Vincent Price was an interesting actor who tended to work in a part or not. This is one of his worst performances, his last scene is laughable. Fonda is assured in the lead but by the time of his big scene we have already written off the trite story.
Only for noir completests.
