In his review of the film in 1948, Bosley Crowther wrote in the New York Times that the film was a sharper slice of political satire than the original play thanks to the screenplay by Anthony Veiller and Myles Connolly. In his 1964 review of the film version of Gore Vidal's play The Best Man, Crowther looked back at State of the Union and labeled it one of the greatest political films ever made.
