- John Gavin Stevens: Lucas, has it ever occurred to you if you just said "mister" to white people and said it like you meant it, you might not be sitting here now?
- Lucas Beauchamp: So I'm to commence now? I can start off by saying "mister" to the folks that drag me outta here and builds a fire under me.
- John Gavin Stevens: Mr. Hampton is right Miss Eunice, and so are you. They'd pass even Will Legate sooner or later when there's enough of them.
- John Gavin Stevens: [pause] But there's one thing that would stop them. Long enough anyhow.
- John Gavin Stevens: [pause] And that's somebody without a gun.
- John Gavin Stevens: [pause] A lady. A white lady.
- Miss Eunice Habersham: [coolly to Crawford Gowrie as he stands menacingly in the entrance to the jail with a can of gasoline ready to set the building on fire with her in it if need be] Please stay out of my light so I can thread my needle.
- Crawford Gowrie: Miss Haversham, I'm not gonna touch yuh now. You're an old lady, but you're in the wrong. You're fightin' the whole county, but you're gonna get tired, and when yuh do get tired, we're gonna go in.
- Miss Eunice Habersham: [unflustered] I'm goin' for eighty, and I'm not tired yet.
- John Gavin Stevens: [to Chick as he looks out over the crowds in town] They don't know it out there, but he does. He knows he's finished. He's running through his last few pennies of freedom, and, I reckon, he's gonna spend them the only way he knows... on revenge.
- Sheriff Hampton: What I want to know is what chick and his buddy would have done if there had been a body in that coffin?
- Chick Mallison: I don't know. I hadn't thought about it.
- Aleck: [nervously] Uh, I did.
