So, what do the 4th Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place Feb. 18, 1952, have in common with the 2022 edition?
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
The stars of the No. 1 TV series, CBS’ “I Love Lucy,” were the hosts of the Emmy ceremony, which was telecast in Los Angeles on Kcea, now known as Kabc. And it was the first time that the Emmys embraced national television networks. Previously, nominations and awards were bestowed on projects that were produced or aired in Los Angeles.
This year, Amy Poehler’s valentine of a film, “Lucy and Desi,” not only received strong reviews but six Emmy nominations including Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special and directing for Poehler. The Amazon Prime doc won two: writer Mark Monroe and composer David Schwartz.
Traveling back to the 1952, the ceremony took places at venerable nightclub, the Cocoanut Grove. It must have been a short show because only seven awards were handed out.

Betty White’s career ran through practically the entire history of television. And before White died on Dec. 31 at the age of 99, her longevity was a tribute not merely to persistence but to the willingness of a classic Hollywood talent to be versatile and to adapt.
In moving from television in the 1940s and ’50s to late-in-life media stardom on contemporary sitcoms and on “Saturday Night Live” (with some plum movie roles in between), White was perennially able to shift gears. She brought the best of an irreducible public persona — sparkling and witty, even or especially as dim or deluded characters — to a breadth of projects that offered her chances to show different sides of her talent. Her gifts recalled the best of an era of Hollywood in which charm reigned supreme; placing those gifts in a modern context provided a counterpoint that keeps fans fascinated by White practically to the century mark.

“Betty White was nominated for the Emmy 24 times and she won 8,” Alec Baldwin noted during a tribute to her at the Emmys in 2018. “And at 96 years old, she still thinks about all those Emmys she didn’t win and she’s still bitter,” added that sly Kate McKinnon as she introduced the honoree.
Betty White laughed as she stepped out on stage to a riotous standing ovation, which obviously overwhelmed her because, in fact, she was always proud of her Emmy victories, of course, especially because they were for comic work, which she considered much harder to perform than drama.
“Doing drama is, in a sense, easier, she once said. “In doing comedy, if you don’t get that laugh, there’s something wrong. It’s fun once in a while to do a serious part, but I really enjoy doing comedy because I love to laugh.”

Betty White had a mischievous side, and she loved to have fun and crack jokes on the set of “The Golden Girls.” But there were times when she was all business.
Those times were often on Monday mornings. In the early years of the NBC comedy, White, the legendary performer who died this week at the age of 99, would often sit with “Golden Girls” executive producer Tony Thomas and dig into the overnight ratings for the hit sitcom that aired in Saturday time slots for the entirety of its 1985-1992 run.
“When I think of Betty, I think of fun,” Thomas told Variety. “She liked to have a good time at work. We laughed a lot. She was just the best.”

Long-beloved TV mainstay and The Golden Girls star Betty White has died at 99, TMZ reports. The actress was set to turn 100 on January 17, and her centennial birthday is currently being celebrated on the cover of the current issue of People magazine. “I’m so lucky to be in such good health and feel so good at this age. It’s amazing,” she was quoted as saying in the story. White made her small screen debut in 1949 as cohost of the Al Jarvis’ live variety show, Hollywood on Television, which earned her her first Primetime Emmy. She first really made a name for herself as a TV icon in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, starring as the flirty Sue Ann Nivens from 1973 to 1977. She then went on to play lovable ditz Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls from 1985 to 1992. The pioneer White was the first woman to produce a sitcom with Life with Elizabeth,...

Betty White, the Emmy-winning TV star who had a remarkable later-career resurgence in films, TV commercials and the hit series “The Golden Girls” and “Hot in Cleveland,” has died. She was 99.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a death investigation on the 500 block of N. Carmelina Ave. in Los Angeles at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. White would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 17. White is believed to have died Thursday night at her Brentwood home.
White’s agent and close friend Jeff Witjas confirmed her death to Variety. “Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.

There’s never a bad time for a new superhero show, mind you. But with Amazon’s brilliantly bloody The Boys having been off air for five or so months now, the streaming world is particularly due for a new supe. With its list of new releases for March 2021, Amazon is going to be rectifying that.

Kirkman’s comic series is a colorful, thrilling, and violent take on superhero myths and the series that it inspired will feature a truly impressive cast. The historic Music Hall Theater in Beverly Hills has been acquired by film distribution company Blue Fox Entertainment, which will renovate the three-screen complex for a planned October reopening.
Blue Fox, a 6-year old company based in Century City, sees taking over a long-term lease on the theater as a natural extension of its independent film distribution and sales business. Blue Fox owner James Huntsman says “People are going to be blown away” when they see the new design for the theater, which is the only multiplex operating in the city of Beverly Hills.
Built in 1936 and opened in 1937, the art deco landmark had been part of Laemmle Theaters until 2019, when a trio of Laemmle vets took over briefly to run it as the Lumiere until the Covid pandemic closed down theaters.
Huntsman says there’s a need in Los Angeles for space for premieres, special screenings and four-wall bookings.

We don’t have much to celebrate in 2021 so far, but there’s one person we can always count on: actress Betty White! America’s grandmother is turning 99 today (January 17), and she’s not letting quarantine slow her down. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the “Golden Girls” star shared what she’s hoping to do to celebrate.
“Running a mile each morning has been curtailed by Covid, so I am working on getting ‘The Pet Set’ rereleased, and feeding the two ducks who come to visit me every day,” she said.
With so much uncertainty in the world, people tend to lose it when they see their favorite elderly celebrities trending, but White isn’t worried about getting older. In an interview with People magazine she said, “I am blessed with good health so turning 99 is no different than turning 98.” She chalks this up to being perpetually optimistic and not taking herself too seriously.

Betty White, commonly referred to as “The First Lady of Television,” celebrates her 99th birthday on Sunday, January 17. The five-time Emmy winner for Primetime roles has been a mainstay on television screens for longer than even the medium itself. Her more than 80-year career on the small screen remains the longest of any performer in the history of TV.
White began appearing in television while it was still in its infancy, appearing on an experimental program in 1939. After years of working in radio, she served as co-host of “Hollywood on Television” in 1949, a gig that required White to ad lib for most of the show’s five-hour running time. Her first series was 1953’s “Life with Elizabeth,” which earned White a regional Emmy Award.

“I had come off the Mary Tyler Moore Show playing the neighborhood nymphomaniac, Sue Ann Nivens…So I was thrilled at Blanche,” Betty continued. “I thought that was wonderful and then all...

Betty White may have been dumped by NBC, but she’s been picked up by Guinness World Records. The 2014 edition, out September 12, has awarded the 91-year-old actress the inaugural title of “Longest TV Career For An Entertainer (Female).” The new category is in recognition of White’s 74 years in the business. The career-length category previously was non-gender specific. Brit Bruce Forsyth holds the male title also with his 74 years in the industry. White began her career in radio in 1939, and she has won Emmys, SAG Awards and Grammys while appearing decade after decade in TV series such as Life With Elizabeth, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls, and The Bold And The Beautiful. Guinness likely will have to update the award next year for White as she currently stars on TV Land’s Hot In Cleveland, which has been renewed for a fifth season. Related: Big ‘Mary Tyler Moore...

Our favorite "Golden Girl" Betty White turns 91 on Thursday, Jan. 17. Happy birthday, Betty!
The celebrated actress and passionate animal-rights activist is embracing her eighth decade in the business, with a résumé that's overflowing with game shows, talk shows, sitcoms, animated series, hosting duties and one particularly foulmouthed film performance. She currently hosts the NBC reality show "Betty White's Off Their Rockers," which features senior citizens playing practical jokes on their younger counterparts.
"Retirement is not in my vocabulary. They aren't going to get rid of me that way," she told USA Today in 2010.
We aren't arguing otherwise. We fully expect White still to be going strong at 100. In the meantime, here are 10 fun facts about this wonderful woman.
1. Betty White was born in Oak Park, Ill. Her family moved to California during the Great Depression. She discovered her love for performing when she wrote and played the lead in a graduation play in junior high.

There had been speculation that it had been done previously by Betty White for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls and — way back in 1952 — something called Life With Elizabeth. But the only problem is, neither IMDb nor the TV Academy have a record of White winning for Life With Elizabeth. There was, however, one previous winner of Emmys for roles in three different shows: Tyne Daly, for lead in...

At the age of 90, Betty White picked up her 20th Emmy nomination for hosting "Betty White's Off Their Rockers." Yep, 20 for her primetime and daytime work and she's still grateful -- and surprised -- by the love.
"I'm 90 years old, I've been around forever," White said during a recent phone interview with The Huffington Post. "People have got to be up to here with me and to still get a nomination was just incredible."
Her 20th nomination was for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program for NBC's hidden camera prank show, "Betty White's Off Their Rockers." The Emmy love didn't stop there: Her NBC birthday special, "Betty White's 90th Birthday: A Tribute To America's Golden Girl," also received two nominations.
"I'm so thrilled! It sure keeps life interesting," she said.
Since her TV career began in the '40s, White has been a mainstay in the medium.

Los Angeles — Actress Betty White says she couldn't believe it when the Screen Actors Guild decided to honor her. "They told me about the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award, and I thought they were putting me on," the "Golden Girls" star said. "I really did. I thought, 'Oh, sure.'" She'll finally have tangible proof Saturday night, when Sandra Bullock, her co-star in "The Proposal," hands over the guild's statuette, paying tribute to White's more than 60-year career. The SAG Awards will air on...

Betty White, who will be honored at Saturday's Screen Actors Guild Awards with a lifetime achievement salute, seems to just get better with age. Once described by the Wall Street Journal as "television's longest-working actress," the 88-year-old White had her first starring sitcom role in 1953's Life With Elizabeth. For many years after that you might say she was best known not so much as an actress but as herself, Betty White - pretty, pert, charming - on talk shows and game shows. It was only in middle age that she landed her two most famous roles, both of which confirmed her as a funny,...

Modesty is the last thing Betty White should be indulging in before she accepts a Life Achievement Award for her legendary 61-year career, to be presented at the 16th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, airing Jan. 23 on TBS and TNT. But when faced with the statement that practically everyone in the free world has grown up with the dimpled comedian and adores her natural presence, impeccable timing, and hilarious quips, the 87-year-old shakes her head. "Oh, have I got you fooled," she says with a smile. "No."Yes. If audiences didn't first notice White as Rose Nylund telling St. Olaf stories on "The Golden Girls" in 1985, then it might have been as the man-hungry "Happy Homemaker" Sue Ann Nivens on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" in 1973. Some might even recall when White produced and starred in "Life With Elizabeth" in 1953. All three roles earned her Emmys. Even kids born in...
