This film was an early starring role for Rock Hudson, and, according to Jane Wyman, he was very nervous. Some of his scenes had to be reshot thirty or forty times, but Wyman never said a word. Reportedly, years later at a party, Hudson ran into Wyman and said, "You were nice to me when you didn't have to be, and I want you to know that I thank you and love you for it."
Jane Wyman was widely felt to look too old and unattractive for her character. Several critics complained it was not believable that Rock Hudson would have been interested in her.
Although Rock Hudson spoke favorably of the film, it was felt he ignored the negative aspects of the production because he was glad to be able to move on from B-movies.
Rock Hudson never knew that Jane Wyman had served as an FBI informer under the code name T-10, providing the names of actors within the motion picture industry whom she believed to be communist sympathizers. Husband Ronald Reagan shared the same FBI informant code T-10, with Wyman.
