Criterion has done this title justice. The DVD looks fantastic. This is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. Beneath all the sadness, lies a powerful tale of oppression and slavery, and how one man tried to fight the power. The story revolves around 2 children whose father, a former bailiff, was discharged because the government didn't agree with his policies. They felt he was to merciful and should rule with an iron fist. He is forced into exile. Some years later, his wife and 2 children decide to go visit him and on the way get kidnapped by slave traders. The family never forgot their fathers teachings on compassion and mercy. The mother and 2 children get separated and are sold to different manors. They experience the harsh life of peasants and the oppression that comes from their masters. And it is not till many years later that they attempt to reunite. Its interesting to note that even though the film is set in feudal Japan, it has a universal message about oppression and slavery. The title is a bit odd as Sansho is not the films main character, but rather one of the bailiffs who runs a private manor. Aside from that the film is excellent with some great performances, a decent running time, and a story that is both touching and heartfelt.
