In 2011, the artist Natalie Frank was sitting with the painter Paula Rego in her London studio. Rego has worked with fairy tales a lot in her work, and she suggested Frank read some of the Grimm’s tales in their original, well, quite grim versions — before they got sanitized by Disney, in other words. Rego felt that the stories aligned strongly with Frank’s interests in women’s bodies, sexuality, violence, and everyday transformations. “I was so taken by the stories that I thought I knew,” Frank says of reading the tales. “I didn't know that Rapunzel actually gets her name because her mother is craving rapunzel lettuce, which is growing in the witch’s garden. So she trades her baby, who is Rapunzel, for magic lettuce.” Or, for example, that Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters try to fool the prince into thinking they are that girl from the ball by...

Today in 2002, the first Broadway revival of Into the Woods opened at the Broadhurst Theatre, where it ran for 279 performances. Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical Joanna Gleason, in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm.

Sometimes you see a trailer for a movie and know it’s perfect for you… that was Avengers Grimm for me. So much so that I specifically hunted down a copy for review!
An off-the-wall mix of Grimm Fairy tale characters and superhero team-up movies which, frankly, should have been obvious given the title, Avengers Grimm is the latest film from the schlockmeisters The Asylum – you know, those folks behind such films as Transmorphers, Hercules Reborn, Sharknado and a myriad of other mockbusters, cash-ins and giant sea creature movies.
Like many and Asylum movie, the plot is relatively simple: when Rumpelstiltskin uses the Magic Mirror to escapes to the modern world taking Snow White with him and destroying the mirror in the process,...

It’s almost too easy to declare that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson “rocked” as host of this week’s Saturday Night Live — but that doesn’t mean such a statement would be inaccurate.
PhotosJohn Noble Recalls His Time on Fringe, 24, Sleepy Hollow and More
In fact, it says a lot about the Furious 7 star’s comedic chops that the evening’s worst sketches either gave him absolutely nothing to do (“Cooking With Paul”) or didn’t include him at all (“The Circus”).
Johnson proved so fearlessly committed to his punch lines that he even scored a few laughs...

Many of Disney's iconic properties have been transmuted from their original form of terrifying Germanic tales of woe written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm into more family-friendly fare. Early in the film of the fairy-tale operetta Into the Woods, I was nearly jumping out of my seat with glee. The creators of the original show, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, had intended to transcend — even explode — the sugary, homogenized Walt Disney treatment. Now here it is, getting a full, lavish Disney studio production with big-deal movie stars (Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp) and somehow working as well if not better than it did almost 30 years ago on Broadway. My euphoria lasted a long, long time … but all good things must end. Which is also the point of the musical, though not quite in the way it happens here. Until its hairpin turn into the apocalyptic, the material is ingenious. Sondheim and Lapine take three Brothers Grimm stories — “Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” and “Rapunzel” — and set them...

Anna Kendrick ("Pitch Perfect") plays Cinderella in Disney’s fairy tale musical, Into the Woods. Her character isn't sure she wants to settle down with her Prince (Chris Pine). Disney has released the first full trailer for its musical adaptation Into the Woods.
The footage is filled with stars and recognisable fairy tale images, but has no singing.
Cast members appearing in the trailer include Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as her prince, Meryl Streep as a witch, and James Corden and Emily Blunt as the cursed, childless Baker and his wife.
Johnny Depp's Wolf is also glimpsed briefly.
The movie, an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's hit stage musical of the same name, combines the story of a childless couple with the Grimm fairy tales.
Sondheim recently caused controversy when he claimed that Disney had censored any adult content from the adaptation, although he later clarified that he thinks the movie version is "first rate".
Disney released a number of new images from Into the Woods earlier this week.

Everyone knows that the best fairy tales are the really dark ones you never heard as a child. What’s better: Cinderella’s ugly stepsisters pouting in the background, or getting their eyes pecked out by vengeful doves? The Evil Queen in Snow White falling off a cliff, or dancing in red-hot iron shoes until she drops dead? I’ll consider that point proven.
Big Bad Wolves, an Israeli film from writer-directors Navot Papushado and Aharon Kashales, wants to be a modern fairy tale for adults, one which bets on being as twisted and disturbing as possible. Though Quentin Tarantino (probably knowingly) damned Big Bad Wolves by naming it the best film of 2013, which it certainly is not (despite it playing almost like a feature-length version of the torture scene from Tarantino’s own Reservoir Dogs), there’s still an undeniable fascination to be found in watching a tale of...

By the pricking of our thumbs, something wicked this way comes. There have been various arrivals and departures as the large cast of Disney's Stephen Sondheim musical Into The Woods has been assembled, but here's proof (if any were needed) that Meryl Streep is indeed the fairytale musical's Wicked Witch. She's not hovering through the fog and filthy air, but she has at least taken the trouble to climb a tree. Or perhaps she flew there on her broomstick. Riffing on the stories of the Brothers Grimm, Into The Woods is about a childless baker who attempts to lift a family curse by journeying woods-ward to confront Streep's evil harpy. Along the way they encounter classic characters like Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack (of beanstalk notoriety) and Red Riding Hood.James Corden is the Baker, with Emily Blunt as his wife, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Cinders' handsome prince, Lilla Crawford as Red,...

Disney's film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods just entered production a week ago, and there's already a first look at Meryl Streep as the desperate and terrifying witch in the woods.
The three-time Oscar winner, 64, looks to have landed another illustrious role, as she's seen decked out in an intense and frightening costume. A tangled mane of stark white hair, ratty, curled claws and a tattered witch's wardrobe round out the effect, successfully making her look quite intimidating.
