One of the better entries

Warning: Spoilers
Here's a movie that is definitely one of the better entries in Merton Park's "Edgar Wallace" series which played as second theatrical features in both the United Kingdom and Australia. And popular features they were too. In fact, the Press Sheet for this one tells exhibitors in an "Important Notice" that "Owing to the tremendous success of the Edgar Wallace thrillers, exhibitors are STRONGLY ADVISED to bill each title in the series as 'THE LATEST EDGAR WALLACE THRILLER' on all their PRESS ADVERTISING AND FRONT OF HOUSE PUBLICITY." This one certainly has a good cast, including two delightful heroines in Nadja Regin and Joyce Blair. (Whatever happened to them? I've no idea, but I'm sure IMDb can tell us!) The screenplay also arouses our interest, but -- alas! -- it comes to a tame conclusion. However, by the humble standards of the British Quota Quickie, production values are remarkably slick.

Number Six
Prismark101 July 2021
Det. Supt. Hallett is determined to get Charles Valentine, a criminal who seems to get away with murder. Hallett has placed a police spy called number six to keep track of Valentine.

In London he has hooked up with Nadia Leiven. She is wealthy and willing to lend him money.

Nadia refuses to believe Hallett when he tells her what Valentine has done with his other lovers once they served their usefulness.

Valentine gets increasingly paranoid, Jimmy Gale a young henchman keen to impress is in the frame as number six.

As a B movie, it is really laborious. The way it's set up, anyone could be the police spy but it all lacks tension.

At the end the reveal is rapidly dealt with and it never was much of a shock.

Brian Bedford stands out as Jimmy Gale.

I really enjoyed this episode of series due to its excellent story, casting, direction and cinematography. I wish they were all up at this level. Some very good individual performances by the talented actors on show here.
