- Hank Williams: Well, now that you're well on your way to health and happiness, I'd like to sing a little song for your *soul*.
- Ann: [to Shorty and Audrey] Brace yourself. Here comes the entertainment.
- Hank Williams: [singing] I went down to the river to watch the fish swim by, But I got to the river so lonesome I wanted to die, oh Lord, And then I jumped in the river, but the doggone river was dry, She's long gone, and now I'm lonesome blue...
- Audrey: She'd like for you to stay.
- Hank Williams: Yeah, well, maybe that's a good enough reason to take off like some big old bird.
- Hank Williams: [singing] I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin, I wouldn't let my dear savior in, Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night, Praise the Lord, I saw the light. I saw the light, I saw the light, No more darkness, no more night, Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight, Praise the Lord, I saw the light...
- Fred Rose: Hank Williams, you'll never get civilized.
- Hank Williams: Why don't you stop tryin' to reform me and give me a kiss.
- Fred Rose: It is going to happen. One day. I can feel it. One day we'll look back and I'll say to you, "I told you so." Our kind of music isn't just for country people, it's for everybody! Don't you believe it?
- Hank Williams: Mighty nice spot here. What say we take a look around.
- Fred Rose: What for?
- Hank Williams: The lost chord.
- Hank Williams: Lucky I ain't a Yankee, I'd go back up north and tell folks they got people here that just come outta the trees.
- Hank Williams: What you goin' so fast for? Why don't you slow down?
- Audrey Williams: We got places to go.
- Audrey Williams: Hank is something very special, Mr. Rose. He don't even know it; but, I do - and so do all the people.
- Audrey: You got to forget him. Unless you do, you'll always be what you were - and what you *still* are.
- Hank Williams: Woman, ain't you ever gonna quit tryin' to change me?
- Audrey Williams: Why don't you get dressed?
- Hank Williams: Oh, it's hot, darlin'.
- Audrey Williams: Here. I declare, for six months you've been the biggest singer in Shreveport and you walk around in your underwear.
- Audrey Williams: You're saying that Hank's just for the hills? The poor people?
- Fred Rose: No. But, he has some rough edges.
- Audrey Williams: Yeah. Not sophisticated? You know, I once looked up that word. I never will forget what it said. It said, "to sophisticate something means to change it, being natural to artificial, to be sophisticated means you're not simple." In other words, bein' sophisticated is bein' a complicated fake.
- Fred Rose: You getting more southern with your songs?
- Songwriter at Rose's Office: What do I know about hushpuppies and chitlins?
- Fred Rose: They're good.
- Hank Williams: [singing] A picture from the past came slowly stealin', As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you, Then suddenly I got that old time feelin', I can't help it if I'm still in love with you.
- Hank Williams: [drunk, onstage] Its not often a fella can keep his wife waitin' in front of five or six thousand people. Bet you didn't think I'd make it.
- [blows into the microphone]
- Hank Williams: Yeah, it works. Now, let me see if I do. Cheatin' heart, fellas.
- [singing]
- Hank Williams: Your cheatin' heart, Will make you weep, You'll cry and cry, And try to sleep, But sleep won't come, The whole night through, Your cheatin' heart will tell on you...
- Hank Williams: [singing] Why do you run and hide from life, to try it just ain't smart, Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart...
- Audrey Williams: Hank, don't you want it?
- Hank Williams: Don't I want it? I want it so bad I could taste it!
- Hank Williams: [singing] Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh, Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou...
- Shorty Younger: You're the king and you're killin' yourself. Why?
- Hank Williams: Well, wait a damn minute! Nobody asked me if I wanted to be king!
- Hank Williams: Doctor's tell me I can't ride. So, I just drive them damn Detroit horses.
- Fred Rose: Well, it looks as if the car's taking the worst of it.
- Hank Williams: Modern women talkin' their man's business when they ought to be mindin' their babies.
- Hank Williams: Talkin' what about, Pappy?
- Fred Rose: About the future, Hank.
- Hank Williams: Well, that's interesting. But, you missed something: the past.
- Hank Williams: Do as you damn well please. Cause that's what I'm gonna do. Jefferson, get me a drink.
- Audrey Williams: He belongs to them. All those faces out there. Watching. Listening. A poor country boy. We made a god out of 'em.
- Hank Williams: [singing] Did you ever see a robin weep, When leaves begin to die? That means he's lost the will to live...
- Shorty Younger: We won't be seein' Hank again, at least, not in this world. He was my friend. He was your friend. He was one of you. A poor boy who - who never forgot you. He was on this earth - 29 years. Now, he's gone home.
- Hank Williams: One song.
- [singing]
- Hank Williams: Did you hear that lonesome Whippoorwill? He sounds too blue to fly, The midnight train is whining low, I'm so lonesome, I could cry...
- Hank Williams: Time and place. When and where and who you are. Why, I know exactly what's going on in that mind of yours, "Hank, I know we started out as just a couple of poor kids from Alabama; but, people change." Well, they don't! Are you so dumb you can't understand that?
- Hank Williams: Thank you friends. I'll be back to see you, now. That is, if the good Lord's willin' and creeks don't dry.
