“Mystery Science Theater 3000” is returning for a 13th season, this time on a new indie streaming platform, Gizmoplex.
Created by Joel Hodgson in 1988, the cult show “MST3K” follows a series of ordinary humans captured by mad scientists who subject them to a series of terrible B-movies. To keep their sanity, the humans create a series of companion robots to riff on the films they watch, which are presented on the show in their entirety. “MST3K” has gone through several iterations, initially airing on Ktma-tv Minneapolis, then on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi channel, for a total of 10 seasons. It was revived for a two season run on Netflix in 2017. The show has been highly acclaimed since its creation, winning a Peabody in 1993, and has helped turn seberal obscure movies into cult classics, such as “Manos: The Hands of Fate.”

When cinephiles talk about film, we often find ourselves discussing directorial careers; the trademarks, the way we see their identities as filmmakers emerge and change. That’s fascinating, but equally interesting in their own way are those directors who give us only one film to look at. It might be a singular masterpiece, a cult item, or a contender for worst film ever made (Manos: The Hands of Fate). In the case of Joel Anderson, writer/director of Lake Mungo, what we have is not just a great film, but real unfulfilled promise of a career we’re yet to see.
Lake Mungo is a faux documentary telling the story of the Palmer family in the wake of the drowning death of 16 year old Alice (Talia Zucker). Her parents June and Russell (Rosie Traynor and David Pledger) and brother Matthew (Martin Sharpe) are obviously devastated, and all begin...

Every few years, the internet remembers the existence of Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam, a brazen attempt to loosely remake Star Wars after a military coup d’état in Turkey led to the Turkish film board clamping down on Western blockbusters entering the country.
Turkish Star Wars first joined the compelling world of low-budget blockbuster rip-offs back in 1982, when the film’s director, Çetin Inanç, who had previously been churning out erotica, decided it was an ideal time to start making propaganda and action films instead. Thus, Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam (aka The Man Who Saved the World) was born, and became a homegrown hit.
Swirling science-fiction, fantasy, martial arts, adventure and superhero genres together, the beloved movie starred Cüneyt Arkın and utilized footage, music and sound effects not just from Star Wars, but from Flash Gordon, Battlestar Galactica and Raiders of the Lost Ark, too – all completely unauthorized. In the not too distant past — November 24th, 1988, A.D. — a moderately successful stand-up comedian named Joel Hodgson slipped on a jumpsuit. He then spent a few hours on a Minneapolis Uhf station making fun of the terrible movies Invaders from the Deep and Revenge of the Mysterions from Mars, alongside a couple of handmade robot puppets. Only a handful of lucky Minnesotans were watching Ktma that Thanksgiving night, exactly 30 years ago. They all saw the birth of a pop culture phenomenon: a charmingly cheap-looking show that, no joke, changed television.

Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers is actually the first movie in the Sleepaway Camp franchise that I’d ever seen. The VHS cover art lured me in as a kid by teasing possible appearances from iconic villains, with Freddy’s glove and Jason’s hockey mask poking out of a woman’s backpack. I was a bit too young to understand the concept of trademarks at that age, so you can imagine my disappointment when neither character made so much as a cameo. Since I hadn’t seen the first film and didn’t have any context for the franchise as a whole (or that twist), I just thought of the movie as low-budget trash.
As I’ve grown older, however, I’ve discovered that low-budget trash can be a lovely thing. And I think it’s important to distinguish trash from “so bad they’re good” movies like Troll 2...

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Thanks to the St Louis Video Society and their tireless efforts to unearth the finest independent cinema from our region, we have another couple of gems for you. Eric Stanze is, as far as I can tell, still living in the St Louis area and is still very much involved in the business – he edits documentaries for blu-rays, and also does 2nd unit directing for some fairly mainstream movies; but it’s his 25 years of making low-budget horror that we’re interested in here.
He’s achieved some notoriety in his career for horror movies like “Scrapbook” and “Ice From The Sun”, chock full of unusual imagery and ultra-violence, movies that even have the luxury of their own IMDb pages. But where we’re going we don’t need IMDb or, indeed, any other record of their existence (they’re not even listed on Stanze’s own site anymore,...

Although I’d be unlikely to say this about any other sub-genres, “family turns off road onto dirt track” movies feel a little played-out, like “seen one, seem them all” . A surprising thing to say about a genre with entries as varied as “Manos: The Hands Of Fate” and “The Evil Dead”, perhaps, but no less true; which is why it’s especially nice to see someone come up with a fascinating new twist on the genre, as first-time feature director Damien Power has done with Killing Ground.
Ian (Ian Meadows) and his girlfriend Sam (Harriet Dyer) are off for a weekend’s camping. Stopping at a bar to buy champagne and beer – he’s celebrating graduating from medical school – they meet German (Aaron Pederson), who looks like your stereotypical backwoods lunatic but is actually surprisingly helpful. When they arrive at the idyll-ish campsite, they see...

Now, I never grew up with wrestling, so I was never really a fan of it. Though I did glean some of the mythology through the Smackdown games, since I loved creating my own characters (like Mario and The Master from Manos: The Hands Of Fate) and having them duke it out. Though I get the appeal. It's classic good vs. evil stuff, within the confines of an over-the-top melodrama. It's basically... Read More...

For years now there has been a bitter behind-the-scenes struggle over notoriously shitty movie Manos: The Hands Of Fate. Despite the film dying a mercifully swift death upon its initial release and disappearing into the wilds of public domain (where it only existed in the form of a crappy print), it resurfaced and took an a cult popularity in the wake of its use on Mystery Science Theater 3000. The 1966 movie about a family captured by a polygamous pagan cult led by a white-faced “Master” and abetted by a slow-witted and Igor-like grunt named Torgo took on the sheen of appeal only found by films so bad, they attract an audience of people eager to revel in the incompetence of the execution. (See also: The Room, Troll 2, Death Bed: The Bed That Eats.)

Manos: The Hands of Fate is a film I’ve been reading about for quite some time. Infamous for its ineptitude, it’s one of those “so bad it’s good” kind of movies that has achieved cult status due to its terrible acting, nonsensical plot, and technical errors. Shot in the 60s, it was written and directed by Harold P. Warren, an insurance salesman who, according to legend, made a bet with visiting location scout Stirling Silliphant that he could film a horror movie with an extremely limited budget. And that he did. What he didn’t do, however, was direct a particularly compelling or even scary motion picture. The stories about Manos are infamous, and could be considered more interesting than the film itself. It...

Hey there, everyone! I sincerely hope this finds you all well (or at least coping) and eager (or at least willing) to take on a new year. I love doing year-end lists. For me, it’s a time of reflection, as well as expansion. Since I started with Daily Dead in April of 2015, my horror-view continues to grow; I’ve been so fortunate to meet and speak with some enduring legends of the genre, not to mention strike many new friendships through social media. But what my continuing immersion in this greatest of cultures has provided above all else is an appreciation for the variety and depth horror has to offer. It really has been a great year; unfortunately, I’ve missed some goodies, but dammit, I tried. So, without anymore ado whatsoever, here are a few (okay, a lot) of my favorite things from 2016.

Tom Neyman, best known for his role as The Master in the 1966 cult classic Manos: The Hands Of Fate, died on Saturday. His daughter, Jackey Neyman, who also appeared in the film as young Debbie, shared the news on Facebook, stating that Neyman “has now transcended to become Manos. #HeIsAlwaysWithUs.” He was 80.
Born in 1935, Neyman—a professional artist—was active in community theater throughout the ‘60s. His only film credit is Harold P. Warren’s Manos: The Hands Of Fate, made famous by Mystery Science Theater 3000 and deemed “The Worst Movie Ever Made” by Entertainment Weekly. Made as a result of a bet with In The Heat Of The Night screenwriter Stirling Silliphant for a budget of $19,000, Manos featured local theater actors and models and was shot on 16mm, with all dialogue and sound effects dubbed in during post-production. I’m not crazy and you’re not reading this wrong. There’s a video game adaptation of Manos: The Hands Of Fate (yes, that film, the one that gives Plan 9 From Outer Space a run for its money).
What’s even more bizarre is that it’s an 8 bit game not from 1985 but rather, 2015.
As strange as this might sound, it makes perfect sense. If good movies usually make for bad 8 bit gameplay, then perhaps bad films make for good 8 bit gameplay.
If you’ve ever played an old school platforming shooter, then you know exactly what to expect from Manos: The Hands Of Fate. It’s basically Castlevania (with some references to the series) meets Mega Man. But even if you’ve never played either of those series, the enemy patterns and attacks, decaying blocks, and platforming are straight out of the Nes era. And even if...

As we get closer and closer to Halloween, the home entertainment releases on Blu-ray and DVD seem to get better and better, as this Tuesday will see the release of several fantastic cult classics and so much more. On October 13th, Criterion Collection is bringing home David Cronenberg’s terrifying masterpiece The Brood to both Blu and DVD and we’ve also got The Return of Count Yorga to look forward to courtesy of Scream Factory.
For those of you who love a good "bad movie," Synapse Releasing has a restored version of the granddaddy of them all, Manos: The Hands of Fate, arriving on both formats this week as well.
Other notable October 13th releases include a two-disc Blu-ray of the 192os classic The Phantom of the Opera, The Gallows, the 2oth anniversary release of Mosquito, Shakma, Tomorrowland, and the high-def debut of Class of Nuke ’Em High 3.

Over the years, there have been many films that have become immensely popular and gained cult status simply because of how insanely terrible they are. Movies like Plan 9 From Outer Space, Manos: The Hands of Fate and The Room are loved not for being great, but because it.s fascinating to put yourself in the minds of the filmmakers to try and figure out exactly what they were going for. Now that people are going to have the opportunity to see director John Rad.s Dangerous Men, this very exclusive group of films is about to get a little bigger: There.s very little chance that you.ve actually ever heard of Dangerous Men - a feature that was made over the course of two decades and was only given a tiny California-based release back in 2005 . but it.s a film that you should definitely start to hear a...

The Belgian film Cub validates the fear some of us have of spending the night in the woods. Cub on Blu-ray and DVD will hit stores on August 18th. Also: theatrical and digital release details for The Diabolical, HollyShorts Film Festival 2015 lineup, and Manos: The Hands of Fate soundtrack on vinyl.
Cub: Artsploitation Films will release Cub on Blu-ray and DVD on August 18th. Directed by Jonas Govaerts from a screenplay he wrote with Roel Mondelaers, Cub stars Maurice Luijten, Titus De Voogdt, Stef Aerts, Evelien Bosmans, and Jan Hammenecker.
"This dark, bloody, imaginative fairy tale about a camping trip that turns into deadly carnage draws on such influences as Lord of the Rings, Friday the 13th, and The Devil’s Backbone. The story follows 12-year-old outcast Sam who, along with his troop of cub scouts and their teenage supervisors, camp in woods rumored to house a mysterious and deadly werewolf.

Hacker collective Everyone returns in this week’s entertaining and even touching episode of Elementary…
This review contains spoilers.
3.19 One Watson, One Holmes
Before that glass ball had even begun its course along Elementary’s Rube Goldberg machine, an online civil war had turned into a murder investigation and a would-be client had turned into the chief suspect. It was a no-messin’ start for an entertaining episode that continued apace, with Holmes and Watson pinging around the city like pinballs, bouncing from one suspect to another.
Until now, hacker collective Everyone has been a bit-player in Elementary, one of Holmes’ many irregulars to be called upon for information, appeased with public humiliation, then sent back to its anarchist pranks.

I adore bad movies. I own Foodfight! on DVD. I’ve made countless friends furious when I forced them to sit through Manos: the Hands of Fate. I own a VHS player partly so I can watch my copy of Miami Connection. Terrifyingly personal psycho-drama turned black comedy The Room, no-budget bigfoot horror Night of the Demon, the many sordid works of Neil Breen, real estate agent by day, least charismatic person to ever act by night- these are movies that I enjoy, truly, and, strange as it may seem, they mean something to me. When I tell people that Birdemic is one of my favorite films ever, I mean it in every way, with no ironic distance. As silly as they are, as strange as the cult of bad movie watchers is, these things are more than just trainwrecks to be watched with a sense of sadistic joy; they’re odd,...

Thanks to Mystery Science Theater 3000, laughing at terrible movies has become a pop-culture institution. Now, 15 years after its last cancellation, the series might be revived for a new generation of snarky critics with an "online incarnation." In Wired's recent MST3K oral history, creator and original host Joel Hodgson hints at a possible series update, which would "feature a fresh (and as-yet unannounced) host and cameos from many MST3K alumni."

There are a handful of unimpeachable Thanksgiving institutions. Multi-thousand calorie meals? Of course. Football games featuring the Lions and Cowboys? Naturally. Parades? You bet. Watching hypnotically wonderful marathons of Mystery Science Theater 3000? Unfortunately, not since 1997.
Of course, that all changes this Thanksgiving. EW is pleased to announce that MST3K creator Joel Hodgson is hopping on board the Satellite of Love once again to program the return of Turkey Day. Shout! Factory, who have been doing a stellar job putting out MST3K on DVD, is helping to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary with a Turkey Day Marathon, curated and hosted by Hodgson.

From John Travolta to Bob Dylan, from Ed Wood to Orson Welles: ‘The Greatest Bad Movies of All Time’ (photo: John Travolta in the Scientology-inspired movie ‘Battlefield Earth’) Phil Hall’s The Greatest Bad Movies of All Time, tagged as a "new celebration of cinematic inanity," was published by Bear Manor on August 12, 2013. According to the book’s press release, the Greatest Bad Movies "are the films that inspire wonder" — of a unique variety: "You are left wondering how seemingly intelligent people could gather together and spend money to create such bizarre productions." According to Phil Hall, among the most wonder-inspiring movies ever made are John Travolta’s Roger Christian-directed Scientology-inspired megabomb Battlefield Earth; John Huston’s sort of The Maltese Falcon send up Beat the Devil, starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, and Gina Lollobrigida; Robert Altman’s Health, featuring a classy cast that includes Glenda Jackson, James Garner,...

A sequel hook is that very ambitious moment at the end of a movie where it boldly hint at a second film. While some can give the audience chills (think the ending of Batman Begins) there are a whole lot of them that end up becoming an embarrassment – usually when the film ends up bombing and ensuring that a second helping won’t be needed. Then again, when has a movie being bad stopped sequels from happening? I propose the following eight – ridiculous hooks to sequels that they really ought to have done, if only for the morbid curiosity. 8. Manos: The Hands Of Fate – “The End… ?” You know you want this to happen – if only for the awesome Rifftrax episode it would make. Manos holds the distinction of being the film that even its MST3K episode couldn’t save. Unless you really enjoy looking out the window on long car trips, this...

You’ve gotta love the British – despite all their talk about “stiff upper lips,” they sure do love their hyperbole. The latest comes from the country’s film critics, who’ve taken to asking if Ray Cooney’s silly romantic comedy Run for Your Wife is the worst film ever. While we certainly agree it looks pretty lousy (the jokes are obvious and the plot isn’t particularly inspired…), there’s no way this film is as awful as an Un-MST3K’d version of Manos: The Hands of Fate or even Plan 9 from Outer Space. Heck, we suspect Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star was worse than this adaptation of Cooney’s popular stage play, but that hasn’t stopped Brit critics from teeing off on this piffle. The film earned numerous...

Films as bad as Birdemic: Shock and Terror aren't supposed to get sequels, but if James Nguyen can keep the acting poor, the sound abysmal and the humour intact, it'll be another classic
Made on a reported budget of $10,000 (£6,385), Birdemic: Shock and Terror quickly vaulted into the highest echelons of the best worst films ever made upon its 2010 release. Thanks to Birdemic's trailer – largely comprised of a scene where several almost-actors listlessly flap their arms at a handful of stock-still Commodore 64 maybe-eagles – the film immediately joined the likes of The Room and Sharktopus; films best watched drunk at 3am when your brain has lost the power to process competency.
And thanks to all this notoriety, there's going to be a Birdemic sequel. According to Dreadcentral, Birdemic 2: The Resurrection will be released in June, with screenings all over the world. This is uncharted territory. Films as bad as Birdemic aren't supposed to get sequels.

Michael J. Nelson and his team are giving two legendary horrible science-fiction films more screentime than they would've ever had otherwise. Nelson -- along with his former "Mystery Science Theater 3000" cast mates Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett -- are returning "Manos: The Hands of Fate" and "Plan 9 From Outer Space" to theaters in January. And no worries, it will come with all the fun and snark that the team from RiffTrax (what was formed after MST3K was cancelled) can muster. "I'm really excited because it's not every day you get a chance to see the worst movie ever made, and then a week later, see a movie even worse than that," Nelson said in a release. "Truly, you owe it to yourself to see these classics of the genre." Both presentations are encores of screenings already conducted ...

Last year, Ben Solovey discovered a workprint of Manos: The Hands of Fate and set out to complete a high definition restoration of the film. After a successful crowd funding project and months of hard work, the restoration is complete and will be screening tomorrow at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. We recently had a chance to catch up with Ben Solovey and ask him all about the restoration project and his love of Manos:
When did you first become aware of Manos: The Hands of Fate? What was your initial impression of it?

The idea that filmmakers should strive to make their movies timeless may be somewhat passé but remains an appealing notion. Calling a film “dated” can sometimes be just as damning as calling it “awful” or “unwatchable”. But the fact is times change and attitudes change and some films age better than others.
Advances in technology are especially inevitable. No matter how well constructed the plot of a film is, technology can theoretically advance to a point that renders certain parts of a film obsolete. Sometimes the entire premise can be undermined if the technological changes are substantial enough.
So here are five movies that could not be made today without major alterations to the plot to account for new technologies.
5. Manos: The Hands of Fate
Universally recognized as one of the worst movies ever made, this cinematic train wreck did at least result in a hilarious episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

As he has before, Edgar Chaput has inspired me with one of his pieces, this one – part of Sos’s recent Bond Fest — concerning the loopy 1967 Casino Royale. As I commented on Edgar’s piece, I didn’t disagree that Royale was a royal mess after having passed through the hands of one director after another (and one screenwriter after another as well). Mess though it was, however, I found it – as I wrote – a “fascinating mess.” Maybe that’s just a holdover from seeing it as a 12-year-old when so much about the movie seemed so dizzyingly novel at the time: it’s casual sexuality, bawdy humor, wink-to-the-audience jokes, hallucinogenic visuals, Burt Bacharach’s poptastic score. In a way, the fact that the movie didn’t make much sense and caromed from one directorial style to another only added to the sensory overload it unloaded on a pre-adolescent.

In honor of the Halloween season, we thought we'd chat with one of the genre's most iconic characters, the one and only Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, as portrayed by the lovely Cassandra Peterson. Read on for our ten questions with one of our favorite Scream Queens.
1. How did the Elvira character come about?
Elvira: I was with The Groundlings comedy improv group for four years before Elvira came along. My fellow Groundlings at the time were Paul Reubens (Pee-wee Herman), the late Phil Hartman of "Saturday Night Live" fame, Lorraine Newman, John Lovitz, Julia Sweeny, etc. etc. Many, many working actors have spawned careers at The Groundlings. (If you're ever in La, check them out at their theatre on Melrose Avenue.)
As budding actresses tend to do, I auditioned nearly every day so when I heard that a local Hollywood TV station was looking for a horror host,...

In an era when many movies adorning screens are remakes and reboots, it’s hard to argue against the reasoning behind the ex-“Mystery Science Theater 3000” guys at Rifftrax taking a second stab at Manos: The Hands of Fate, a film that would be toiling in obscurity if not for MST3K.
Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett are bringing RiffTrax back to the big screen for an August 16th one-night-only live event lambasting a movie whose cult status as one of the worst movies ever made can pretty much be chalked up to the 1993 episode of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” that reintroduced it to the world that barely knew it existed in the first place. This will actually be the first go-round with The Master for Mike Nelson as Joel Hodgson was the host of MST3K at the time.

Harold P. Warren’s Manos: the Hands of Fate is one those adorably odd micro-budgeted films that have garnered a strong cult following because of an astonishing, unclassifiable “otherness.” Complete with actors who appear to be hypnotized, bizarre dubbed dialogue and myriad moments of 'whaaaa?', Manos is less a film than it is an experience. A fairly trippy experience.
It was made far and away from the typical Hollywood system, defying category, logic and basic narrative structure. Shot in El Paso, Texas, in 1966, the film was the result of a bet Warren made with screenwriter Stirling Silliphant (The Poseidon Adventure). The two struck up a conversation at a coffee shop while the writer was in town shooting a film. Warren told Silliphant that making a movie would be easy and bet him that he could shoot one entirely on his own. Using local theater actors and a script that...
