Regular but passable Spanish comedy with silly situations and a famous starring duo
ma-cortes13 July 2022
Funny and amusing film , though middlingly directed by José Maria Elorrieta . A witch (gorgeous Maria Perschy) from the 16th century falls for a modern-day professor (Jeffrey Hunter) and by means of a magic amulet she sends him on an adventure in time in which he becomes involved into abundant problems , first to the Stone Age , after the Nero emperor time and eventually a far future where there aren't men ,but with plenty of women (Paloma Cela and several others) .

This likable movie relies heavily in confusion , mayhem when a professor meets a fantastic witch appearing here and there , and even troubles arise when he is wonderfully transported to Stone Age and Roman time .This flick features beautiful girls , inadequate costumes , dated atrezzo and stodgy action sequences , feeling too cheap and though actually convince us at times , it results to be an average flick . It's the sort of story that surprises us due to the ridiculous , absurd happenings and with non-sense set pieces . Here stands out the enjoyable performances from the American Jeffrey Hunter and Austrian Maria Perschy as the bombshell who seduces him . They're well accompanied by an all-support-Spanish-cast , such as : Perla Cristal , Gustavo Rojo, Félix Dafauce , Marisol Ayuso, Julio Pérez Tabernero , Antonio Pica ,Alfonso de la Vega , Esperanza Roy ,Frank Braña and Al Mulock -playing Wurlitz the Wizard- who a bit later on , he committed suicide on the set of his last movie The Good , The Bad and the Ugly (1968) by jumping from a hotel, on location in Guadix, Andalucia.

Atmospheric cinematography by cameraman Alfonso Nieva showing Madrid outdoors , being shot on various location in Colmenar Viejo , Manzanares del Real , La Pedriza, Madrid and Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain . The movie was produced in medium budget by Sidney W. Pink, a North American producer who financed several co-productions in Spain, such as : Fuego, El valle de las Espadas, Tabu, La llamada, Un sudario a su medida , Joe Navidad, Finger on the trigger, Una bruja sin escoba, among others. The motion picture was regularly directed by José Maria Elorrieta who used to be nicknamed under pseudonym, Joe Lacy . He was a prolific director who worked a lot along his short life, as he died at 53. He directed all kinds genres, such as : Spaghetti Western : ¨7 de Pancho Villa¨, ¨Siete disparos al amanecer¨, ¨Fuerte perdido¨ , ¨El hombre de la diligencia¨, ¨Si quieres vivir dispara¨. ¨A Witch Without a Broom¨(1967) trating 5.5/10 , mediocre .

lowbrow but fun Spanish-made Witchcraft/time-travel comedy
django-112 September 2004
This Sidney Pink production was one of many quirky films the indie expatriate producer made in Spain in the 1960s, many of which featured well-chosen American stars. This was the first of two Pink films starring Jeffrey Hunter, best known as playing Jesus in KING OF KINGS and of being the original Captain in the Star Trek pilot (the second film in his two-film contract with Pink was the interesting allegorical western THE Christmas KID aka JOE NAVIDAD). Here he plays a Madrid University professor who imagines he sees a lovely young lady (played by the wide-eyed Maria Perschy) sitting in the front row of his class, but who is seen by no one else. She turns out to be a bumbling witch who likes him, and who winds up sending him to different periods in time in her attempt to bring him to her time period or to the present time. So about half the film (or so it seems)takes place in the Roman era with Hunter as a slave--that part of the film plays like a sword and sandal comedy. It also winds up in a futuristic period (1999 was the future in 1967) where humanity has been wiped out in a world war and only seven women are left, women who expect Hunter to repopulate the world with them! With the popularity of I DREAM OF JEANNIE and BEWITCHED during this period, a witchcraft comedy must have seemed like a safe bet for a feature film, but this film is a lot rawer and less refined than either TV show. Originally from Austria, Ms. Perschy is a distinctive-looking lady and fine dramatic actress who is quite a charmer and plays comedy well. During the 60s she appeared in all kinds of films in many countries and has continued working regularly up through the late 1990s...any fans of 60s eurocinema can probably name a dozen films of hers they've enjoyed. She also worked for Pink in the excellent "female western" THE TALL WOMEN the year before. Jeffrey Hunter was much underrated during his lifetime and died young--much of his later output was made overseas. I don't remember him doing a lot of comedy, but he is fine here playing an uptight college professor who is bumbling yet lovable. He looks uncomfortable in the sword and sandal sequences, but fortunately he is SUPPOSED TO look uncomfortable because he is after all a 20th century college professor, NOT a Roman slave! He carries the whole film well and any Hunter fan should seek this out. Overall, another interesting entry in the Sid Pink canon (see my reviews of two other Pink comedies...THE FICKLE FINGER OF FATE with Tab Hunter, and MADIGAN'S MILLIONS with Dustin Hoffman). This does not at all look like a Hollywood film, which gives it much of its interest. The comedy is not particularly sophisticated, and some of the supporting players' voices are not synchronized too well, but it's a pleasant comedy and those looking for something different will probably not regret the time spent. I'll spend 86 minutes with Maria Perschy anytime, and Jeff Hunter died while still a relatively young man, so any performance of his is worth watching, particularly those made outside the Hollywood studio system (check out THE Christmas KID or FIND A WAY TO DIE sometime).

Good Movie

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie, many years ago, and just saw it again on YouTube. A Witch Without A Broom is a nice diverting comedy with Professor Garver Logan ( Jeffrey Hunter) being surrounded by lots of beautiful women; Past, present and future. The most beautiful Mariana ( Maria Perschy), is actually a witch who falls in love with him. Does he end up feeling the same way? Spoilers ahead: Of course, and they will end up happily ever after. If someone is looking for a nice light movie with pretty woman, this is a good choice 7/10 stars.

Any college campus that has a parking space for a broom is all right with me.

Warning: Spoilers
That's one of the first shots of this very funny Spanish comedy starring Jeffrey Hunter as a handsome but uptight college professor who finds himself under the spell of a beautiful but rather innocent witch, Maria Perschy, who has possession of a time travel device and accidentally keeps sending Hunter to different eras where he becomes the desired object of practically every beautiful woman he meets. She's with him in the caveman era as well as ancient Rome, but not in the future where Earth's population has been obliterated with the exception of a dozen or so women who want to repopulate the planet and see Hunter as their way of doing so. Perschy finds herself dealing with an amorous caveman and a Roman army officer, needing to find some way to escape from them so she can save hunter from a fate he really doesn't want to be saved from.

This is very witty and gorgeously filmed, with Hunter and Perschy ending up in period costume for each time that they travel to thanks to her witchcraft, while the presence of her warlock father watching over her gives the film a feeling what "Bewitched" would be like as adapted by European culture. This film presents its women from various times as sexually aggressive creatures, not afraid of expressing their desires, yet turning on their prospective partners when they are nearly caught. But the dialogue is very amusing, and the atmosphere very light-hearted and silly in a good way. Hunter and Perschy, as well as the rest of the cast, are directed to have their tongues firmly in their cheek, and that makes it a fun little satire for the audience as well. A good music score and production design takes the viewer through the various time periods for a visual show that they won't forget.
