In 1977, the Syracuse Post Standard blazed the headline “Comic Book Confab Listed” to announce the second Ithaca Comic Convention. Actually, I think it would be more appropriate to say they whispered the headline. It was scrunched in the middle of a crowded page. The article listed professional comic guests such as Walter Simonson and Al Milgrom. I’m not one-hundred percent sure if that’s how my family found out about that second Ithaca Comic Con way back then. It may have been from seeing a flyer on the bulletin board at Fay’s Drug Store. That used to be a legitimate marketing venue too. But the big takeaway is that back then, the concept of a comic-con certainly wasn’t understood.
“People meet to buy and sell old funny books?” The very notion sounded absurd.
Today’s comic conventions and “cons” are part of the nation’s everyday lexicon.

For Brian Tyree Henry, all the world’s a stage -- literally. As a black man, he refuses to be pigeonholed into what some may think his 6-foot-2 frame projects, and he enjoys turning those presumptions on their ear.
“One day in Atlanta, I was driving my Hyundai Sonata and I saw a Suburban booming Gucci Mane, so I assumed it was a black dude [driving],” Henry recalls to Et over the phone from his Harlem apartment on one of the first summer days in New York City. “When I pulled up, I saw four white boys going crazy to the music and when they saw me, they turned it down. And I said, ‘Hey man, you can turn that up because I’m listening to this.’ I was listening to Kylie Minogue. They were completely thrown off. People meet me on the red carpet and think I’ll be one way and I’m like, ‘That’s your...

Nick Viall is certainly no stranger to looking for love on reality TV. When The Bachelor's next leading man begins his run in January, it will be his fourth time on the franchise. Not that Viall minds. In fact, he tells People exclusively in this week's issue that "it's frustrating that there is this idea that I was always a bridesmaid, never a bride kind .... It's not fun knowing that people know me as the guy who professed his love for two women on national TV, only to realize that they probably weren't the ones for me. But I'm...

Mubi is presenting the exclusive online premiere of Isiah Medina's 88:88 on March 18, 2016. The great Filipino director Raya Martin (La última película, Independencia) has generously offered an introduction to the film. Click here for more information in 88:88, including interviews and a director's statement. There was a time when a virtual flight simulator was rare enough that a minor forgotten program on the early Windows platform became a treasured obsession. It was nothing like your best-selling games today, nor was it some viral experience. The simulator went around through everyone’s mails in Eudora, in an era when executable programs weren’t promptly perceived as destructive. The flight simulator was simple: you are looking out directly from a generic cockpit, navigating through a three-dimensional barren landscape that was neither Mars nor Morocco. In my fragile memory bank, the light-colored hues alternated between aquamarine and pink. There was nothing else...

She hit the celebrity genetic jackpot, but Zoe Kravitz ended up in a very difficult place after growing up with Lenny Kravitz as her dad and Lisa Bonet as her mother.
The “Mad Max” babe told Complex magazine that she struggled with anorexia throughout her teen years. “I had a really hard time when I was 16, 17, 18. I started with the eating disorder in high school… Just [a hard time] loving myself. I think it was part of being a woman, and being surrounded by [fame]. I don't think it was about the fame, but I think it was definitely about being around that world, seeing that world. I felt pressured.”
Zoe added, “My mother's a beautiful woman, and I think, in some way, I felt intimidated by that sometimes. Everyone sees themselves in some weird, obscure way. People meet her and don't know what to do with themselves, but she doesn't know how f*cking cool she is.

It's a measure of how completely the Internet has transformed communication that I need to explain, for the benefit of some younger readers, what encyclopedias were: bound editions summing up all available knowledge, delivered to one's home in handsome bound editions. The "Great Books" series zeroed in on books about history, poetry, natural science, math and other fields of study; the "Great Ideas" series was meant to tie all the ideas together, and that was the mission given to Roger when he undertook this piece about film.

In today’s social media world, Twitter is a very important tool for every WWE performer or just anybody associated with wrestling in general. It’s a way for regular people to interact with celebrities, to get their news at the click at the button, to look at pictures, watch videos and everything else that we’ve gotten used to in this technologically heavy world that we’re living in.
My name’s John and I’m a Twitterholic @johnreport. It’s been about five years since I started using it and here I am 72,000 tweets later enjoying it as much as ever. When I first started using it one of the main purposes was simply to interact with other wrestling fans. At the time I was writing at a number of sites (not as big as this one) and just trying to grow as a writer. People meet...

In American cinema, fate is often presented as a path leading to success – especially when it comes to love. People meet, fall head-over-heels for one another, experience a setback or two, then live happily ever after. In films outside of Hollywood, love stories are often more realistic, and more in tune with subjective experiences of love. In real life, you have to learn how to love. You have to know who you are before turning to others for deep-seated romantic connection. Love at first sight, though, does exist in real life. Maybe not a long-lasting, grow old together, kind of love; but a life-altering spark, where you absolutely need to experience a particular person. Blue is the Warmest Color deals with this kind of love. Similar to both her and Stranger by the Lake, Blue revolves around a character who is lost. Unlike those films, though, Blue is epic in scope.

It's hard to feel bad for the characters on "The Tomorrow People." They're young, hot and never have to deal with public transportation in New York City. With an interesting concept and plenty happening, the characters also help to make one of the more entertaining pilots of this fall.
Disclaimer
Okay, so here's the thing. Much like executive producers Greg Berlanti and Julie Plec, I was in love with the original "Tomorrow People" series back in the '80s when Nickelodeon aired reruns. I've been waiting impatiently for this to hit TV since the pilot was announced about a year ago.
It's safe to say that I was predisposed to like this show. Thus, don't expect a lot of criticism here. Not only is this a solid pilot, "The Tomorrow People" is also a show that pushes all of my happy buttons.
Yes, they could have screwed this up. Berlanti...

The cast members of "Glam Fairy," the Style Network spin-off of "Jerseylicious" that debuted last month, along with a few "Jerseylicious" alums, have some harsh words for their fellow New Jerseyans on reality TV.
"I find the 'Jersey Shore' so silly and insulting," said Alexa Prisco, the star of "Glam Fairy" and former star of "Jerseylicious." "They're not reflective of hardworking individuals like we are. Our show has hardworking people on it who want to be successful, not waste their lives."
"Glam Fairy" is the Style Network's latest reality series set in the spray-tan-friendly state. The makeover show takes viewers inside the glittery, high-energy world of makeup artist Prisco, who left Gatsby Salon -- featured on the second season of "Jerseylicious"-- to establish The Glam Factory.
Prisco's former "Jerseylicious" buddy, Tracy Dimarco, may no longer be working with her but agrees with Prisco's views on "Jersey Shore." She...

Plan B has revealed that he has become less aggressive since becoming a musician. In an interview with the Daily Record, the 'She Said' singer claimed that he will never "compromise" on his songs and admitted that he used to sell cannabis to fund his dreams of a music career. However, Plan B, whose real name is Ben Drew, confessed that success has made him grow up. "I don't take no s**t from no-one," he explained. "What's wrong with that? If things are not to my standards and people are not respecting what I want they are going to get the back end of it. "But I am also a big softie. People meet me expecting an angry and aggressive gangster. Once they find out I am not that, then they start taking the p*ss and that's when they see the other side of me." Plan B revealed...
