The show was originally filmed in Carefree, Arizona in order to accommodate Van Dyke who was living in Arizona at the time. For the third season, production was moved to Hollywood. Van Dyke decided not to continue with the show because he wanted to move back to Arizona and because Carl Reiner had quit as producer.
CBS was so anxious to have Dick Van Dyke back that they signed him to a three-year contract. After the third season, Van Dyke decided not to renew his contract and the show ended.
Hope Lange who played Dick Van Dyke's wife was a close friend of Mary Tyler Moore, Van Dyke's previous TV wife. Moore writes of their friendship in her autobiography After All.
Carl Reiner wrote an episode in which Jenny was to walk in on Dick and Jenny having sex. When CBS refused to air the episode, Reiner protested by stating he would never work with CBS again after the third season. But Reiner returned to CBS in 1981 to appear in Walt Disney: One Man's Dream (1981) and Skokie (1981). The episode aired in syndicated reruns.
